Chapter 6: The Woman Who Planned to Take Everything

Daniel asked the bank representative to freeze both transfers while the authorization documents were reviewed.

He gave his mother's name, verified the relevant account information, and requested written confirmation of every pending transaction.

When the call ended, he placed the phone on the desk.

Vanessa stood near the door, twisting her wedding ring around her finger.

“Daniel, please listen to me.””

He looked at her.

“I'm listening.””

“I borrowed money from my mother last year. I thought I could pay it back before you found out.””

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Twenty-five thousand.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Twenty-five thousand dollars?””

Vanessa nodded.

“What did you spend it on?””

“Things.””

“What things?””

She looked away.

“Credit cards. Some bills. A few purchases.””

“What purchases?””

“Clothes. Furniture. Things for the house.””

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“You told me we were saving money.””

“We were trying to save money.””

“You told me we couldn't afford the vacation Ethan wanted.””

“I was trying to keep up with everything!””

“By borrowing twenty-five thousand dollars from your mother and taking eighteen thousand five hundred from mine?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I didn't think you'd understand.””

“Then explain it to me.””

She sank into the chair beside the desk.

For several seconds, she stared at her hands.

Then she began talking so quickly that Daniel struggled to follow.

Her mother had offered to lend her money after Vanessa admitted she'd accumulated credit card debt. At first, she'd planned to repay it with her annual bonus. But the bonus had been smaller than expected, and the interest on several cards had continued growing.

Patricia began demanding repayment.

Vanessa became desperate.

She had noticed Evelyn's bank folder while organizing the office. She knew Daniel occasionally helped his mother with online banking, but Evelyn still managed most of her own money.

Vanessa had started by photographing the account information.

Then she found a financial authorization form online.

She told herself she was only creating an emergency arrangement.

But when Evelyn refused to sign it, Vanessa waited until Daniel was away on a business trip and brought the paperwork to her again.

This time, she told Evelyn that Daniel had already approved it.

Evelyn signed.

Vanessa used the authorization to submit the first transfer.

She planned to replace the money before anyone noticed.

The second transfer was intended to cover the remaining amount she owed Patricia, along with additional debt she hadn't disclosed.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he asked one question.

“Did my mother understand that she was authorizing you to move her money?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“She signed the document.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“She knew I was helping her.””

“Did she know you were transferring money into an account connected to your mother?””

Vanessa's silence answered him.

Daniel stood.

“I'm calling the bank back.””

“You can't do that!””

He turned toward her.

“Watch me.””

“You'll ruin everything!””

“No, Vanessa. You did that when you used my mother's trust to pay your debts.””

She sprang from the chair.

“If you report this, my mother could lose everything, too!””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would my mother-in-law lose anything?””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

He took a step closer.

“Does Patricia have the money?””

“She used some of it.””

“For what?””

Vanessa began crying again.

“Her own bills. She said she needed it temporarily.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“So you took money from my mother, gave it to your mother, and now neither of you can return it?””

“I was going to fix it!””

“With what?””

She couldn't answer.

A knock sounded at the office door.

Evelyn stood outside, holding the wooden keepsake box.

“Daniel, sweetheart? May I come in?””

He immediately softened.

“Of course, Mom.””

She entered slowly and placed the box on the desk.

“I found something I think you should see.””

Daniel opened the lid.

The letters were stacked neatly inside. The wedding photograph rested on top, its edges worn smooth from years of handling.

Beneath the letters lay a small blue notebook.

Daniel had never seen it before.

“What's this?””

“My father gave it to me when I was young,” Evelyn said.

“I wrote down important things because I was afraid I'd forget them.””

She opened it to a page marked with a faded ribbon.

There were dates, short notes, and several account numbers.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why are you showing me this?””

Evelyn pointed to an entry written three weeks earlier.

Vanessa says I must sign papers so she can help me. I don't understand why Daniel hasn't told me himself.

Beneath it, another entry appeared.

I asked Daniel about it today. He said he hadn't asked me to sign anything.

Daniel froze.

He looked at Vanessa.

She had gone perfectly still.

“You knew Mom had asked me,” he said.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I forgot.””

“You forgot that you lied to her about me approving the paperwork?””

“I was under pressure!””

Evelyn closed the notebook.

“Sweetheart, I didn't want to believe she would do something wrong. I thought perhaps I misunderstood.””

Daniel took his mother's hand.

“You didn't misunderstand.””

Her eyes filled.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“You were frightened. That isn't your fault.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Evelyn, I never wanted to hurt you.””

The older woman looked at her.

“Then why did you tell me my son wanted me gone?””

Vanessa stopped.

“Why did you take my husband's letters?””

No answer.

“Why did you make me eat alone?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Evelyn's voice remained gentle, which somehow made the questions more devastating.

“And why did you tell me I was becoming confused when I remembered exactly what you said?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“I was angry. I was stressed. I didn't know what else to do.””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“I understand being frightened, dear. I've been frightened many times in my life.””

She withdrew her hand.

“But I never made a child go hungry because I was frightened.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Daniel looked away for a moment, struggling to contain his anger.

He wanted to believe that his wife could still explain herself, that there was some missing detail that would make the past several days less terrible.

But the evidence was clear.

The footage. The letters. The financial authorization. The bank transfers.

He could no longer pretend this was a simple disagreement about household responsibilities.

He picked up his phone and called the bank again.

This time, he requested the fraud department.

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Daniel, don't!””

He stepped back.

“I am protecting my mother.””

“You're destroying our marriage!””

“You destroyed my trust.””

She grabbed his sleeve.

“Please. Think about Ethan. What happens when he finds out his mother stole from his grandmother?””

Daniel gently removed her hand.

“He deserves to grow up knowing that people are responsible for their actions.””

Vanessa stared at him as if she no longer recognized the man standing before her.

When the call ended, Daniel told her the bank had confirmed the transfers were being investigated. They would require Evelyn's direct confirmation of the authorization and might need copies of the original documents.

Vanessa sank into the chair.

“What happens now?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Now, you tell me everything. Every debt. Every transfer. Every document you signed or submitted using my mother's information.””

“I already told you.””

“No. You told me what you thought I could prove.””

Her face went white.

He continued.

“If there are other transactions, I will find them. If you've taken anything else from my mother, I will find that, too.””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “There is something else.””

Daniel felt a fresh wave of dread.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Evelyn, then back at him.

“Your mother isn't the only person whose documents I used.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

“What does that mean?””

She began to cry harder.

“I used your information, too.””

The room seemed to shrink around him.

“My information for what?””

Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.

She placed it on the desk with shaking hands.

Daniel unfolded it.

It was a loan agreement bearing his full legal name, his address, and a signature that looked almost exactly like his own.

The loan amount was $85,000.

The date was six months earlier.

Daniel stared at the signature.

He had never seen the document before.

He had never applied for the loan.

And the money had already been disbursed.

“Where did the eighty-five thousand dollars go?”” he asked.

Vanessa pressed both hands over her mouth.

Then she whispered the one name he hadn't expected.

“Patricia.””

Daniel looked at the loan agreement again.

His wife had not only taken his mother's savings.

She had borrowed money in his name and sent it to her mother.

But as he examined the final page, he noticed a clause that made his blood run cold.

The loan wasn't secured against his salary.

May you like

It was secured against the house.

And the property listed as collateral was the home where Evelyn was sleeping upstairs, believing she was finally safe.
