Chapter 7: The Son Adrian Needed
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Vanessa's words hung in the sterile air.
You're the one he wants.
I stared at my wife, trying to understand why Adrian had spent years imprisoning Michael, why he'd threatened Lily, and why he'd gone to such lengths to bring me to this room.
Then Adrian smiled.
“Your wife has always been cleverer than she appears.””
He set the syringe on the metal tray.
“Unfortunately, she has a habit of revealing things before I've finished explaining them.””
“Explain what?”” I demanded.
Adrian removed his gloves, finger by finger.
His hands were trembling.
Not from fear.
His fingers shook with the unmistakable tremor of someone whose body was slowly failing him. Beneath the bright laboratory lights, his skin looked almost translucent, and dark veins stood out along his wrists.
“I've spent twenty-eight years trying to correct a mistake,” he said.
“Your mother, Eleanor, inherited a rare genetic variation that made her remarkably resistant to a degenerative disease that killed several members of our family. I believed I could isolate that variation and reproduce it.””
“You experimented on your own daughter?””
“I studied her.””
“You used her!””
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Do not lecture me about sacrifice, Mark. You have no idea what I gave up.””
Michael stepped between Adrian and Lily.
“You gave up being human.””
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“And you gave up your life when you stole my research.””
“I stole evidence.””
“You stole my future.””
“No,” Michael said.
“You stole ours.””
Adrian slapped him so hard that Michael stumbled against the examination table.
Lily screamed.
I lunged forward, but two men in dark uniforms emerged from a side door and seized my arms.
Daniel moved to help me. One of the guards struck him in the stomach, forcing him to his knees.
“Don't touch him!”” I shouted.
Adrian lifted a hand, and the guards stopped.
“There's no need for unnecessary violence,” he said.
“We're family.””
I looked at the men holding me.
“Then tell your family to let go.””
Adrian considered the request, then nodded.
The guards released me.
I immediately moved toward Lily.
Adrian blocked my path.
“Not yet.””
“She's seven years old.””
“She's a child with an extraordinary genetic inheritance.””
“She is my daughter!””
“And that is precisely why you're here.””
He walked toward a glass cabinet containing rows of sealed medical samples.
“For years, I believed Michael carried the variation I needed. His medical records suggested he did. But every test produced inconsistent results. Then I discovered that your father had falsified the records from the night you were born.””
I glanced at Michael.
He was struggling to remain upright.
“What records?””
“The original birth register. The one Vanessa stole.””
Adrian held up the file.
“Your father changed the children's identities before they left the hospital. He wanted to keep me from knowing which boy carried the genetic marker.””
My stomach tightened.
“You're telling me you don't know which of us is biologically related to you?””
“I know exactly who your father is.””
He pointed at Michael.
“Michael inherited Eleanor's resistance to the disease, but he also inherited a second genetic trait that makes him unsuitable for my treatment.””
Then he pointed at me.
“You inherited neither of those limitations.””
I stared at him.
“So you want to experiment on me.””
“I want to save my life.””
“By destroying mine?””
“By taking a sample.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You've imprisoned my brother, threatened my daughter, and turned my wife into your accomplice. You expect me to believe you'll stop at a blood test?””
Adrian's face became cold.
“Your brother's suffering was unfortunate, but necessary.””
Michael straightened.
“Necessary?”” he rasped.
“You locked me in a room for five years.””
“You were given opportunities to cooperate.””
“You poisoned me!””
“You were already dying.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward Michael.
“What did he just say?””
Michael's eyes met mine.
For the first time, I saw something beyond fear in them.
Shame.
“Mark,” he whispered, “there's something I should have told you.””
Adrian smiled.
“Go ahead, Michael. Tell your little brother what you did.””
Michael swallowed.
“Eleven years ago, when I discovered Adrian's research, I confronted him at the facility. I found records showing that he'd been using Eleanor's medical samples without consent. I tried to take them to the authorities.””
“And?””
“He offered me money. A new identity. A chance to disappear.””
“You refused.””
“I thought I could expose him.””
Michael lowered his eyes.
“But I made a mistake. I trusted someone who worked for him. They drugged me, staged the accident, and made everyone believe I was dead.””
I shook my head.
“Why didn't you escape?””
“I tried.””
His voice broke.
“Twice. The first time, they caught me outside the city. The second time, they threatened you.””
He looked toward Lily.
“Then they brought me to your house. Vanessa was already involved, and I thought I could reach you through her.””
I stared at my wife.
“You knew Michael was alive before we moved into that house?””
Vanessa nodded through her tears.
“Richard told me Michael had information Adrian needed. He said he would only stay for a few days.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was afraid.””
“So you kept him locked beneath our feet?””
“I thought I could protect you.””
“You hit our daughter!””
Vanessa flinched as if I'd struck her.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
My voice shook.
“You don't know what it feels like to discover that the person you trusted with your child has been teaching her to live in fear.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I never wanted Lily involved.””
“Yet you let her become the only person willing to help Michael.””
Adrian cleared his throat.
“This family reunion is touching, but we have limited time.””
He motioned toward the guards.
One approached me carrying a small medical case.
I backed away.
“Don't.””
Adrian opened the case.
Inside were sealed tubes, a needle, and a small machine with a digital display.
“Your blood contains a biological marker that may help me stabilize my condition. I need a sample to confirm the results.””
“And if I refuse?””
“Then Michael will be returned to the lower chamber, your wife will be transferred somewhere she cannot interfere, and Lily will remain here until I determine what to do with her.””
I looked at the guards.
Then at Daniel, who was slowly pushing himself upright.
Finally, I looked at Michael.
He shook his head.
“Don't do it.””
Adrian sighed.
“You see? Even now, Michael is willing to sacrifice you to protect himself.””
Michael's face twisted with anger.
“That's a lie!””
“Is it?””
Adrian reached into the file and pulled out a photograph.
It showed Michael standing outside a medical facility eleven years earlier, holding a document.
On the back, in Michael's handwriting, were the words:
*Mark's blood is the key.*
I stared at my brother.
“What is that?””
Michael looked devastated.
“I wrote that.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
“Because I thought you might be the only person who could stop him.””
Adrian smiled triumphantly.
“Your brother knew the truth long before you did.””
Michael shook his head.
“I didn't know he wanted to use Mark as a subject. I thought I could use the genetic records to expose him.””
“You wrote that my blood was the key.””
“Because our mother left evidence showing that you had inherited something Adrian couldn't replicate.””
I stepped toward him.
“What?””
Michael opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, Lily slipped out of the chair and ran toward me.
“Daddy!””
Adrian caught her arm.
She screamed and twisted free, knocking a metal tray onto the floor.
Glass shattered.
One of the guards grabbed her.
I charged forward.
The guard struck me across the face. I fell against the examination table, tasting blood.
“Stop!”” Vanessa screamed.
She kicked one of the guards in the knee, sending him stumbling.
For a moment, the room dissolved into chaos.
Daniel tackled the second guard. Michael grabbed Adrian's wrist. Lily crawled beneath the table, sobbing.
Then a gunshot cracked through the laboratory.
Everyone froze.
A guard stood near the doorway, holding a pistol.
Daniel lay on the floor, clutching his shoulder.
Blood spread between his fingers.
“Anybody else want to play hero?”” the guard demanded.
I dropped to my knees beside Daniel.
“Stay with me.””
Daniel gritted his teeth.
“I'm fine.””
“You're bleeding.””
“I noticed.””
Across the room, Adrian recovered the syringe.
He looked at me.
“Enough games.””
He approached with the needle raised.
I stared at the blood on Daniel's shirt, at Lily hiding beneath the table, and at Michael trembling against the wall.
Then I noticed something on the laboratory monitor.
A line of text flashed beneath the patient identification field.
*SUBJECT M — GENETIC COMPATIBILITY: 99.8%.*
The next line read:
*SUBJECT K — GENETIC COMPATIBILITY: 0.0%.*
I frowned.
“What's Subject K?””
Adrian's face changed.
For the first time since I'd met him, he looked genuinely frightened.
He turned toward the monitor.
May you like
And Michael whispered the words that changed everything.
“Mark, Subject K is Adrian.””
