Chapter 2: The Voice Upstairs
I had spent eleven years believing my brother was dead.
In the next eleven seconds, I learned that grief could be replaced by something much worse.
Fear.
Michael clutched my forearm so tightly that his fingernails dug into my skin.
“Don't let him see me,” he whispered.
I stared at the staircase.
“Who is he?””
Michael shook his head. His breathing had become shallow, each inhale accompanied by a faint whistle.
“Not here. Not while he's in the house.””
“Michael, I need answers.””
“And I need you alive.””
Upstairs, Vanessa spoke in the pleasant, measured tone she used when entertaining clients.
“Mark just got home. He's upstairs changing.””
A man's laughter followed.
It was warm and familiar.
I knew that laugh.
I'd heard it at birthday dinners, Christmas gatherings, and the hospital bedside where my father had supposedly taken his last breath.
My father's longtime business partner.
Richard Hale.
The man who had stood beside me at the funeral and told me that Michael's death was the greatest tragedy our family had ever suffered.
The man who had embraced me after my father's death and promised that I would never have to face anything alone.
I felt sick.
Michael saw my expression.
“You know him,” he murmured.
“Richard?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because he was there when they took me.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Then I'm going upstairs.””
Michael grabbed me again.
“If you confront him now, he'll know I told you everything. He'll make sure none of us ever leaves this house.””
“I'm not leaving my daughter alone with him.””
“Then take Lily and go. Get her somewhere safe.””
A small voice came from the stairs.
“Daddy?””
Lily stood there holding her stuffed rabbit. Her cheek was still red, and her eyes darted between me and the man she'd secretly been feeding.
I reached for her.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
She hurried into my arms.
“Is Uncle Michael going to die?””
“No.”” I kissed her forehead.
“I'm going to get him help.””
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“You've got a good girl, Mark.””
Lily looked up at him.
“You told me my daddy would come back for you.””
Michael's face crumpled.
“I hoped he would.””
“I told you he was brave.””
For the first time since discovering him, I almost smiled.
Then Richard's footsteps stopped directly above us.
“Vanessa?”” he called.
“What's that noise?””
My wife answered too quickly.
“Just the television.””
Richard paused.
“I don't hear a television.””
Neither did I.
Because the television was off.
A second later, I heard footsteps approaching the hidden panel.
Michael shoved me toward the narrow passage behind the mattress.
“Get in there.””
“I'm not hiding from him.””
“You're not hiding. You're surviving.””
He pushed Lily into my arms and pointed toward a low opening at the back of the room. I'd never noticed it beneath the hanging blanket.
“There's a maintenance crawlspace. It leads to the old utility entrance. Take her through there.””
“What about you?””
“I'll distract him.””
“You can barely stand.””
“Then he'll underestimate me.””
Before I could argue, the hidden door above us creaked open.
Richard's shadow stretched down the staircase.
“Vanessa?”” he called again, his voice suddenly colder.
“Why is the panel open?””
My wife appeared at the top of the stairs.
“I was checking the pipes.””
“Really?””
“Yes.””
Richard descended one step.
Then another.
I pressed Lily against my chest and moved behind the mattress. Michael remained in the open, bent over and trembling, trying to make himself look weaker than he already was.
Richard reached the bottom.
He wore a charcoal suit and polished black shoes. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his gold wedding ring caught the light as he adjusted his cuff.
He glanced at the mattress, the empty bowl, and the food scattered on the floor.
Then he looked at Michael.
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
“Well,” he said.
“The dead really do have a way of inconveniencing the living.””
Michael lifted his head.
“You should have finished the job.””
Richard smiled.
“I tried. Repeatedly.””
My stomach turned.
He wasn't surprised to see my brother.
He'd expected him to be dead.
“You've been hiding in Mark's house for five years,” Richard continued.
“You must have been desperate.””
Michael spat at his shoes.
Richard stepped aside before the saliva could touch him.
“Still theatrical. Your father always said you inherited your mother's weakness for dramatic gestures.””
“Don't say her name.””
“Why not? She's part of the reason we're all here.””
Richard crouched in front of Michael.
“Tell me something. Did you really think that little girl could save you?””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“Leave Lily out of this.””
“Oh, I intend to.”” Richard stood and brushed imaginary dust from his trousers.
“She's an innocent child. Unlike her father.””
My breath caught.
Richard knew exactly what he was doing.
He wanted Michael angry. He wanted him careless.
And he wanted to know whether my brother had told me anything.
Richard turned toward Vanessa.
“Did Mark see him?””
“No,” she answered.
The lie came so smoothly that it frightened me more than the slap had.
Richard studied her face.
“Look at me when you answer.””
Vanessa raised her eyes.
“No. Mark hasn't seen him.””
Richard nodded.
“Good. Because if he discovers what happened eleven years ago, your little arrangement becomes considerably more complicated.””
My daughter trembled in my arms.
I covered her ears.
Michael looked toward the hiding place. For the briefest moment, our eyes met.
He knew I was there.
And he knew I'd heard everything.
Richard turned back to him.
“Now, Michael, let's discuss the envelope.””
Michael went still.
“What envelope?””
“The one your father gave you before the accident.””
“I don't have it.””
“That's unfortunate.”” Richard's smile vanished.
“Because your father seems to believe it contains the original documents.””
Michael laughed weakly.
“Then perhaps you should ask him.””
Richard's expression changed.
“Don't play games with me.””
“I'm not.””
“You're lying.””
“Maybe you're frightened of what's inside.””
Richard struck Michael across the mouth.
Lily jerked in my arms.
I nearly sprang from behind the mattress, but Michael raised one trembling hand toward me.
Stay hidden.
Richard seized Michael's shirt and pulled him upright.
“You have no idea what your father did to protect you,” he hissed.
“You have no idea what he sacrificed. And if that envelope still exists, every person connected to your family will be dragged into the fire.””
Michael wiped blood from his lip.
“Then let it burn.””
Richard shoved him onto the mattress.
For a few seconds, he stood motionless, breathing through his nose.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Bring me the key.””
She hesitated.
“Richard—”
“Now.””
Vanessa hurried upstairs.
Michael rolled onto his side and looked toward me.
His lips moved silently.
Go.
I lowered myself into the crawlspace, holding Lily close. The passage smelled of dust and wet earth. I could barely fit my shoulders between the pipes, and every movement sent a sharp ache through my knees.
Lily clung to my neck.
“Daddy, are we leaving Uncle Michael?””
“I'm going to get help.””
“But what about the man who visits Mommy?””
I stopped crawling.
“What man?””
“The one who comes when you're at work. The other man.””
My mouth went dry.
“Richard?””
She shook her head.
“No. Someone else. He wears gloves, even inside. Mommy calls him Grandpa sometimes.””
I stared at her in the darkness.
“Grandpa?””
“Not your daddy's daddy,” she whispered.
“The other one.””
I couldn't breathe.
“My father is dead, Lily.””
She shook her head again, more urgently this time.
“No, Daddy. I saw him.””
A crash sounded behind us.
Richard had discovered the crawlspace.
“Mark!”” he shouted from the hidden room.
“I know you're in here!””
Lily buried her face against my shoulder.
May you like
Then she whispered something that made the blood drain from my face.
“He told Mommy that when you found out the truth, she had to kill you.””
