Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
I seized Richard by the front of his suit.
“Where is Vanessa?””
He struck my wrist away.
“Get your hands off me.””
“Tell me where she is!””
Richard lifted his pistol.
My father stepped between us.
“Put that weapon down.””
Richard didn't move.
“Sir, your son is becoming a liability.””
“My son is not your concern.””
“Everything about this family is my concern. I've spent eleven years cleaning up your mistakes.””
My father stared at him.
“And now you've made one of your own.””
Richard's finger tightened around the trigger.
I looked at the gun, then at my father's face.
For the first time, I understood why Michael had warned me not to trust anyone.
There were no sides in this family.
Only people trying to control the truth.
“Richard,” I said carefully, “what did Vanessa take?””
He glanced toward me.
“The original birth register.””
“Why does Adrian want Lily?””
“Ask your father.””
My father closed the envelope and slipped it into his coat.
“Richard, leave us.””
“No.””
The single word hung in the air.
My father looked almost bewildered.
“You're refusing an order?””
“I'm refusing to let you destroy the only thing keeping this family alive.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small remote.
A red light blinked on its surface.
My father went rigid.
“Don't.””
Richard smiled.
“Then give me the envelope.””
I felt a cold certainty settle over me.
Whatever was inside that envelope, Richard believed it was worth threatening all of us.
My father slowly removed the envelope from his coat.
Then he placed it on the table.
“Take it.””
Richard stepped forward.
As he reached for it, I lunged.
We collided against the table. The pistol discharged, the gunshot deafening in the enclosed room. A light fixture shattered overhead.
Richard slammed his elbow into my ribs.
I staggered backward, gasping.
He grabbed the envelope and shoved me against a cabinet.
“Stay down!””
My father swung the metal drawer into Richard's arm.
The remote fell from his hand.
Richard cursed and struck my father across the face.
My father collapsed against the wall.
I tackled Richard from behind.
We hit the floor hard. His gun skidded beneath the table. I caught his wrist, trying to keep him from reaching it, but he drove his knee into my stomach.
Pain exploded through my abdomen.
He scrambled free and grabbed the remote.
“Enough!”” he shouted.
He pressed a button.
Somewhere beneath the vault, machinery roared to life.
The floor shuddered.
My father looked up in horror.
“What have you done?””
Richard backed toward the staircase.
“What I should have done years ago.””
A metallic grinding sound came from behind the steel cabinets.
The vault's ventilation system shut off.
A red warning light began flashing above the door.
My father pushed himself upright.
“Richard, the lower chamber is sealed!””
“Exactly.””
He looked at me with a cold smile.
“You wanted the truth, Mark. Enjoy it.””
Then he ran upstairs.
I rushed toward the vault door.
It wouldn't move.
The locking mechanism had engaged automatically.
My father pounded his fist against the steel.
“Richard!””
No answer.
I grabbed the handle and pulled until my shoulders burned.
Nothing.
A faint hiss began coming from the ventilation grilles.
My father turned toward me.
“Get away from the vents.””
“What is that?””
“An emergency containment system. It was designed to seal the lower chamber if the vault was compromised.””
“Containment of what?””
He didn't answer.
I grabbed a metal chair and swung it against the keypad.
The first strike cracked the plastic.
The second sent sparks across the wall.
On the third, the screen went black.
The door remained locked.
My father slid down against the cabinets.
“There's no point.””
I turned on him.
“Then open it!””
“I can't.””
“You built this place!””
“And Adrian designed the locking system.””
The hiss grew louder.
I felt my pulse hammering in my throat.
“What happens if we stay in here?””
My father stared at the red warning light.
“The chamber will be purged.””
“Purged of what?””
He looked at me.
“Everyone inside.””
I backed away from the vents.
“Then tell me how to stop it.””
He closed his eyes.
“I don't know.””
For a moment, I thought he had given up.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small metal cylinder.
“Your mother gave me this before she died.””
He held it toward me.
“I've carried it for twenty-eight years.””
I took it.
“What is it?””
“A key.””
“To what?””
“The manual override.””
He pointed toward the far wall, where an old electrical panel was concealed behind a steel cabinet.
I dragged the cabinet aside.
Behind it sat a narrow metal box with three keyholes.
The cylinder fit the center lock.
I turned it.
A mechanism clicked.
The warning light changed from red to amber.
But the door remained sealed.
“Two more,” I said.
My father nodded weakly.
“Your mother had the others.””
“Where?””
He looked at me with exhausted eyes.
“One went to Adrian. The other was given to Eleanor's daughter.””
I stared at him.
“Eleanor had a daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
My father swallowed.
“Vanessa.””
The room seemed to stop moving.
“My wife?””
“She is Adrian's granddaughter. Eleanor's daughter.””
I shook my head.
“No. Vanessa's parents died in a house fire when she was a child.””
“That was the story Adrian arranged.””
I gripped the edge of the electrical panel.
“You knew?””
“I discovered it five years ago. By then, Vanessa had already married you.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I believed Adrian would leave you alone if I kept the family secret buried.””
I laughed, but the sound came out broken.
“You married me to a woman whose family you've been hiding from me?””
“No. You married Vanessa because you loved her.””
“Then why did she help imprison Michael?””
My father looked away.
“Because Adrian threatened to reveal her identity. He told her that if she disobeyed him, he'd destroy everything she had.””
“Lily?””
“Yes.””
I stared at the amber light.
“Why would Adrian want his own granddaughter dead?””
My father hesitated.
Then he said, “Because Lily carries the one thing he has spent his entire life trying to recreate.””
A terrible pressure built behind my eyes.
“What thing?””
“The genetic marker that made Eleanor valuable to him.””
My father explained that Adrian had spent decades pursuing experimental treatments intended to slow cellular degeneration. The research had begun as an attempt to treat a rare inherited disease in his own family. Over time, it had become an obsession.
Eleanor had been one of the few people whose medical history suggested the treatment might work.
After her death, Adrian turned to her children.
Michael and I had been monitored since infancy. Medical appointments had been arranged under false names. Samples had been taken without our knowledge. The childhood illnesses I barely remembered suddenly seemed less like ordinary sickness and more like a pattern.
“And Lily?”” I asked.
“Adrian believes she inherited a combination of traits that he couldn't reproduce in either you or Michael.””
“He wants to experiment on her?””
My father's silence answered me.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to scream until the walls cracked.
Instead, I turned back to the override panel.
“Tell me how to open the door.””
He pointed toward the lowest switch.
“Pull it down and hold it for ten seconds. The mechanism should release.””
I did.
Nothing happened.
I pulled harder.
A grinding sound echoed behind the wall, followed by a sharp metallic snap.
The amber light turned green.
The vault door unlocked.
I dragged my father into the stairwell and slammed the door behind us just as the ventilation system began roaring at full power.
We stumbled into the main hall.
Richard was gone.
So was the envelope.
My father leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.
I grabbed his coat.
“Where would Adrian take Lily?””
He looked toward the east wing.
“The old research facility.””
“Where is it?””
“Beneath the east wing.””
I stared at the boarded windows.
“You built a laboratory beneath this house?””
“Adrian did. After Eleanor died, he used the estate to continue his work.””
I felt sick.
“And Michael?””
“He discovered the entrance. That's why Adrian tried to kill him.””
I pulled out my phone.
There was no signal.
Of course.
I ran toward the front door.
My father followed.
“Mark, wait!””
I turned.
“Don't tell me to wait.””
He reached into his pocket and handed me a small photograph.
It showed Vanessa as a little girl, standing beside a woman with dark hair. The woman had the same eyes as my mother.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*If the two brothers ever discover the truth, the daughter must choose which one survives.*
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
My father shook his head.
“I don't know.””
I stared at him.
“That's the first honest thing you've said.””
Then I ran.
Daniel was waiting beside the SUV when I reached the driveway.
He took one look at my face and opened the passenger door.
“Where's your father?””
“Behind me. And I don't have time to explain.””
“Where are we going?””
“The east wing.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Mark, that wing has been sealed for decades.””
“Not anymore.””
We raced around the mansion toward the boarded windows. At the far end of the building, a narrow service entrance stood open.
Inside, the air smelled of disinfectant and damp stone.
A staircase led underground.
We descended into a corridor lined with glass observation windows. Behind one, I saw an examination table fitted with restraints. Behind another stood shelves of labeled containers and old medical equipment.
Daniel stopped beside a steel cabinet.
“Mark, this isn't a family vault.””
“No.””
I stared through the glass.
“It never was.””
At the end of the corridor, a red light glowed above a heavy door.
A keypad displayed a message.
*AUTHORIZED SUBJECTS ONLY.*
Below it were two names.
MICHAEL HAYES.
MARK HAYES.
I reached for the handle.
A voice came through a speaker overhead.
“Welcome back, Mark.””
Adrian.
My father's identical twin spoke with calm, almost affectionate amusement.
“I've been waiting a very long time for this conversation.””
I stepped closer to the speaker.
“Where's my wife?””
“Safe.””
“Where's my daughter?””
A pause.
Then Adrian answered.
“She's with me.””
I slammed my fist against the door.
“If you touch her, I'll kill you.””
Adrian chuckled.
“Your father said the same thing twenty-eight years ago.””
The lock clicked.
The door began to open.
Inside stood Vanessa, her hands tied in front of her. Her face was bruised, and tears streaked her cheeks.
Behind her, Lily sat in a chair, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
And beside them stood Michael.
He was no longer wearing the torn clothes I'd seen beneath our house. Someone had given him a clean shirt, but he still looked weak and frightened.
He raised his head when he saw me.
“Mark,” he whispered.
“Don't come any closer.””
I stopped.
Adrian emerged from the shadows behind him.
He wore black gloves and a white coat.
In his hand was the yellowed hospital file Vanessa had stolen.
“You've finally arrived,” he said.
I looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart, come to Daddy.””
She started to stand.
Adrian placed one gloved hand on her shoulder.
“Not yet.””
Vanessa struggled against her restraints.
“Mark, I'm sorry!””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For everything.””
Adrian smiled.
“Your wife has finally decided to tell the truth.””
He placed the file on a nearby table and opened it to a page covered in medical notes.
“Twenty-eight years ago, two boys were born to my daughter. One inherited my condition. The other did not.””
He turned the page.
“Your father switched their identities to protect them. But he made a mistake.””
I stared at the document.
“What mistake?””
Adrian pointed to the bottom of the page.
A name had been circled in red.
*BIOLOGICAL FATHER: ADRIAN VALE.*
Below it, a second name appeared.
*SECOND PATERNAL DONOR: UNKNOWN.*
Adrian looked directly at me.
“Your father didn't adopt you and Michael to save you, Mark.””
He lifted a small syringe from the tray beside him.
“He adopted you because one of you was never supposed to survive.””
Lily began to cry.
Michael stepped forward, putting himself between Adrian and the child.
“Leave her alone.””
Adrian's smile vanished.
“Move, Michael.””
“No.””
Adrian raised the syringe.
And Vanessa screamed the words that changed everything.
“Mark, don't let him test Lily! She's not the one he wants!””
I stared at her.
“Then who is?””
May you like
Vanessa looked at me through her tears.
“You are.””
