Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Door

“He isn't here for the money.””

Vanessa's whisper barely reached Marcus over the pounding against the front door.

Marcus turned toward her, his expression hardening.

“Then what does he want?””

Vanessa shook her head. Her gold hoop earrings trembled as she backed against the kitchen island.

“Please, Marcus. Not in front of the children.””

“You lost the right to decide what they hear when you started lying to this family.””

Another knock rattled the doorframe.

“Vanessa!”” the man called.

“You have thirty seconds!””

Nia gripped her father's arm. Caleb stood beside her, staring at the photograph still displayed on his phone. The stranger had taken that picture from outside, through the front window. He knew exactly where they were standing.

Marcus pulled out his phone and opened the home security application.

“Everybody stay in the kitchen,” he ordered.

“Nobody opens that door.””

Vanessa hurried toward him.

“You can't call the police.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Give me one good reason why.””

“Because you don't understand what he's capable of.””

“Then help me understand.””

She looked toward the hallway, as though measuring the distance to the nearest exit.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped.

“If you walk away from this conversation, I'm calling the police anyway.””

Vanessa pressed both hands against her mouth. For several seconds, she seemed unable to breathe normally.

Then the doorbell camera chimed.

Marcus opened the live feed.

A man stood on the porch wearing a dark jacket and a baseball cap. He looked to be in his early forties. His beard was closely trimmed, and a thin scar ran from the corner of his left eyebrow toward his temple.

He held a manila envelope beneath one arm.

Marcus had never seen him before.

The stranger looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus,” he said, “I know you can hear me. Ask your wife what happened in Savannah.””

Marcus turned slowly.

“Savannah?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

Caleb looked between them.

“Dad, what happened in Savannah?””

“I don't know,” Marcus replied.

The stranger leaned toward the camera.

“Ask her why she told me you would never find out.””

Marcus felt a cold pressure settle in his chest.

He tapped the intercom.

“This is Marcus. State your name and tell me what you want.””

The man smiled without warmth.

“My name is Darius Cole. And I want what Vanessa promised me.””

“You're not coming inside.””

“Then come outside and talk to me.””

“Not happening.””

Darius lifted the envelope.

“Fine. I'll leave this right here. But when you open it, don't say I didn't give you a chance.””

He placed the envelope on the porch, stepped away from the door, and walked toward the driveway.

Marcus watched him reach the dark vehicle.

Instead of getting inside, Darius turned and looked toward the kitchen window.

He raised two fingers in a small, deliberate gesture.

Vanessa stumbled backward.

Marcus noticed.

“You know him.””

She shook her head.

“Don't lie to me again.””

“I knew him years ago.””

“From Savannah?””

Her silence was answer enough.

Marcus secured the front door and checked the side entrance through the camera system. Once he was satisfied that the stranger had moved away from the house, he told Caleb to remain with Nia while he retrieved the envelope.

“Dad, don't go alone,” Caleb said.

“I'm going three steps onto the porch.””

“That's what people say before something goes wrong.””

Despite everything, Marcus almost smiled at his son's nervous attempt at humor.

“I'll be right back.””

He opened the door cautiously, picked up the envelope, and returned inside. He locked the deadbolt before setting it on the kitchen island.

Nobody touched it.

Then Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What's in here?””

“I don't know.””

He studied her face.

“You're terrified of that envelope.””

“Marcus, please. You need to listen to me before you open it.””

“I'm listening.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Darius and I knew each other before I met you. He helped me when I was going through a difficult time.””

“What kind of help?””

“The kind I don't want to talk about.””

“Then we can talk about it with the police.””

“No!”” Vanessa's voice rose. She immediately lowered it when Nia flinched.

“No, Marcus. Please. You don't understand. If they get involved, everything will come out.””

“Everything about what?””

Vanessa looked at Nia, then Caleb.

“Can we send the children upstairs?””

“No,” Nia said quietly.

Vanessa blinked.

Nia stepped closer to Marcus.

“I've been sent upstairs every time I asked a question. That's how all this happened.””

Marcus placed a protective hand on his daughter's shoulder.

“She stays.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside were printed bank statements, several photographs, and a folded document bearing his full name.

The bank statements showed transfers from their emergency savings account to an unfamiliar account over several months. Some amounts matched the figures Nia had documented. Others were larger.

The photographs showed Vanessa meeting Darius in parking lots, outside restaurants, and once beside a hotel entrance.

Marcus picked up the folded document.

His eyes moved across the first paragraph.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Marcus—”

He raised his hand.

The document appeared to be a copy of a financial agreement. His name was printed at the top, followed by an account number he recognized.

But beneath his name was a signature that looked almost identical to his own.

Almost.

Marcus turned the paper toward the light.

He had never signed it.

The agreement authorized a transfer of funds and listed a property address in Savannah.

A property he had never purchased.

At the bottom of the page was a second signature.

Vanessa's.

Marcus looked up.

“You forged my signature?””

She covered her face.

“I can explain.””

“You used my name to open something in Savannah?””

“I didn't have a choice!””

The words burst out of her before she could stop them.

Caleb stepped closer to Nia.

Marcus laid the document on the counter with frightening care.

“Who forced you?””

Vanessa lowered her hands. Tears streaked her makeup, but her eyes were fixed on the paper.

“Darius wasn't supposed to come here. He told me he would leave us alone if I paid him back.””

“Paid him back for what?””

Vanessa stared at the kitchen floor.

Then she whispered, “The house in Savannah wasn't mine.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Whose house was it?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Your father's.””

For a moment, Marcus couldn't move.

His father had died three years earlier. The Savannah property had been part of the family estate, a small house Marcus remembered visiting as a boy. He had assumed it was sold after the funeral.

He looked down at the document again.

“How does Darius have anything to do with my father's house?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Because he knows what happened the night your father died.””

The kitchen fell silent.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a number he didn't recognize.

He answered without taking his eyes off Vanessa.

A man's voice came through, calm and unmistakably familiar from the doorbell speaker.

“Now you understand why I came, Marcus.””

Darius.

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

“What happened to my father?””

A pause.

Then Darius answered.

“Ask Vanessa why your father changed his will three days before he died.””

The call ended.

Marcus stared at the dark screen.

Across the kitchen, Vanessa began shaking her head.

May you like

“No,” she whispered.

“He wasn't supposed to tell you that.””
