Chapter 3: The Stranger at the Door
“Show me,” Marcus said.
Caleb hesitated.
Vanessa moved toward him so quickly that her chair scraped backward across the tile.
“Give me your phone.””
“No,” Caleb replied, stepping away.
“Caleb, I'm your mother. Give it to me.””
“You're not listening to anything we're saying!””
The words burst out of him before he could stop them.
Vanessa reached for the device.
Caleb pulled it back. Marcus immediately stepped between them, raising one hand.
“Don't touch his phone.””
Vanessa froze.
For the first time since Marcus had known her, she looked less angry than cornered.
“You're all ganging up on me,” she whispered.
“Over a notebook and a few messages you don't even understand.””
“Then explain them,” Marcus said.
“It's complicated.””
“Four thousand dollars doesn't sound complicated. It sounds like money that belongs to our family.””
“You don't understand what I've been dealing with!””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa glanced at the hallway, then at the front door. Her eyes kept returning to Caleb's phone.
That frightened Marcus more than the missing money.
He had expected an argument. Perhaps a confession about debt, a secret purchase, or another mistake that could be explained.
He hadn't expected his wife to look as though someone was about to walk into their home and expose something she couldn't control.
Caleb opened the message thread.
“I took screenshots because I thought I might need them,” he said.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Read the latest one.””
Caleb's thumb hovered over the screen.
Then a notification appeared.
The phone vibrated in his hand.
Everyone looked down.
The new message came from the same unfamiliar number.
I'm coming back tonight. Make sure the door is unlocked.
For a moment, the only sound was the refrigerator humming behind them.
Marcus read the message again.
“Who's coming back?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don't answer him.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“Answer who?””
She pressed her lips together.
“Vanessa, who is this man?””
“I said don't answer him!””
Her voice cracked on the final word.
Nia moved closer to her father and caught his sleeve.
Marcus covered her hand with his own.
“Baby, stay right beside me.””
“Dad,” Nia whispered, “I saw him before.””
Marcus looked down at her.
“When?””
“Last month. He was standing outside the house when you were at work. Vanessa told me not to tell you because he was a friend from before.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus felt his pulse hammering in his throat.
“A friend from before what?””
Nia shook her head.
“I don't know. But he asked her if the money was ready.””
Caleb looked sick.
“That's what I saw in the messages. He kept asking when she could send more.””
Marcus took a slow breath, forcing himself to stay calm for the children.
“Vanessa, did you give this man money from our savings?””
She stared at him.
“It's not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
“I can explain.””
“Start now.””
Vanessa's gaze dropped to the phone in Caleb's hand.
“He was supposed to help me fix something.””
“Fix what?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus reached for his own phone, intending to contact the bank and secure the accounts. Before he could unlock it, another notification appeared on Caleb's screen.
This time, it wasn't a text.
It was a photograph.
Caleb tapped it.
The image showed the front of their house, taken from the driveway. The porch light was on. Through the front window, the kitchen island was visible.
Someone had photographed them from outside.
Nia gasped.
Marcus immediately turned toward the window. Beyond the glass, the driveway lay under the pale glow of the security light. A dark vehicle sat near the curb.
He couldn't make out the driver's face.
“Get away from the window,” Marcus ordered.
Nia stepped behind him. Caleb moved beside his sister, keeping his phone close.
Vanessa stood motionless, staring at the photograph.
Marcus noticed her hands trembling.
“You know he's outside, don't you?””
She shook her head, but the movement was too quick.
“I don't know what he's doing here.””
“Then why are you scared?””
Vanessa looked at him, and for a second her carefully maintained expression collapsed completely.
“Marcus, please,” she whispered.
“Whatever happens, don't let him come inside.””
A sharp knock struck the front door.
Everyone flinched.
Another knock followed, slower and harder.
Marcus positioned himself in front of Nia and Caleb. Vanessa remained beside the kitchen island, her eyes fixed on the entrance as though she recognized the rhythm of the knocking.
Then a man's voice came through the door.
“Vanessa? I know you're in there.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
The man knocked again.
“Open the door. We need to finish what you promised me.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“What did you promise him?””
She opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Caleb's phone vibrated again.
A final message appeared on the screen.
Tell Marcus the truth before I do.
Marcus stared at the words, then at his wife.
Outside, the doorknob began to turn.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered a sentence that changed everything.
“He isn't here for the money.””
