Chapter 2: The Money That Kept Disappearing

Marcus took Nia's phone with both hands, careful not to make her feel as though he was taking control away from her.

“Show me what you mean, sweetheart.””

Nia swiped to the next screenshot.

It showed a handwritten note beside a banking notification. Another image showed a date, a dollar amount, and a short observation: Vanessa left after midnight. Came back at 2:17 a.m.

Marcus frowned.

“Why were you awake at two in the morning?””

“I heard the front door,” Nia replied.

“I went to get water.””

Vanessa let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.

“So now she's keeping surveillance on me? This is ridiculous.””

Marcus didn't look at her.

“Nia, where did you get these amounts?””

“I saw the emergency savings account on your tablet once. You told me that money was for emergencies, so I remembered the balance.””

“You remembered the balance?””

She nodded.

“I thought maybe I was wrong. But then I saw the numbers change.””

Marcus scrolled through the screenshots. Several showed notifications for transfers from the household account. The images weren't proof of who had authorized every transaction, but the dates matched entries in Nia's notebook.

One amount had been circled.

Another had a question mark beside it.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“How long have you been keeping these records?””

“Since August.””

“August?”” His voice cracked slightly.

“You've been dealing with this since August?””

Nia looked down.

“I didn't want you to be mad at me.””

Marcus set the phone on the island and crouched until they were eye to eye.

“Listen to me. You could never make me mad by telling me the truth.””

Her lips trembled.

“Even if it makes you mad at someone you love?””

The question struck harder than any accusation Vanessa had made.

Marcus glanced toward his wife.

Vanessa had moved to the far side of the island. She was gripping the edge of the counter so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.

“Nia is mixing up unrelated things,” Vanessa said.

“I handle household expenses. I move money around when necessary. Marcus knows that.””

“Then you won't mind explaining the transfers,” Marcus replied.

“I'm not explaining our finances to a child who has decided she hates me.””

“I'm asking you.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Your daughter has always resented me. Ever since I married you, she's tried to make sure I'm never comfortable in this house.””

Nia shook her head.

“I never said I hated you.””

“You don't have to say it. You show it every day.””

Marcus stood.

“Stop putting this on her.””

“Then stop treating me like a criminal!””

The word seemed to surprise Vanessa as much as it did Marcus.

He picked up his phone and opened the banking application. After signing in, he checked the emergency savings account.

His face went still.

He refreshed the screen.

Then he refreshed it again.

The balance was significantly lower than he remembered.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “why is there almost four thousand dollars missing from our emergency savings?””

She answered too quickly.

“Car repairs.””

“What car repairs?””

“The transmission.””

“Our mechanic said the transmission was fine.””

Vanessa blinked.

For a fraction of a second, the kitchen fell silent.

Then she reached for Nia's phone.

“Give me that! You're twisting everything!””

Nia pulled it against her chest.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Don't touch her.””

Vanessa's mouth opened, but no words came out.

From the hallway came the sound of hurried footsteps.

Caleb appeared in the kitchen wearing his mustard-yellow hoodie, his own phone clutched in one hand. At seventeen, he was nearly as tall as Marcus, but his worried expression made him look younger.

“Dad,” Caleb said, “I need to show you something.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Caleb, go to your room.””

He didn't move.

“It's about the money.””

Marcus looked at his son.

“What do you know?””

Caleb glanced at Vanessa, then at Nia. His fingers trembled around his phone.

“I saw messages on Mom's phone last week. I wasn't trying to snoop. She left it on the couch, and a notification popped up.””

Vanessa took a step toward him.

“You have absolutely no idea what you saw.””

Caleb flinched but continued.

“There was a man's name beside one of the transfer notifications. The same name came up more than once.””

Marcus felt the room closing in around him.

“What man's name?””

Caleb unlocked his phone and opened a photograph. It showed an unfamiliar man standing beside Vanessa outside their house. She was smiling in the picture, one hand resting on his arm.

Marcus stared at it.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Caleb swallowed.

“I don't know who he is, Dad. But I know he keeps texting her.””

He turned the screen around.

A message preview appeared beneath the photograph.

The next transfer needs to happen before he finds out.

Marcus read it once.

Then again.

His eyes lifted slowly toward his wife.

“Before who finds out, Vanessa?””

She backed away from the island.

And Caleb, pale with fear, whispered the words that made Marcus's stomach drop.

“Dad, that's not the worst message I saw.””
