Chapter 6: The Night My Mother Disappeared

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was standing at the top of the staircase, gripping the railing so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

"No," she whispered.

Daniel stepped inside.

"Tell him.""

Officer Miller moved between us.

"Nobody moves. I want everyone to remain where they are.""

But I couldn't take my eyes off my wife.

"What happened that night, Vanessa?""

She shook her head.

"Ryan, please.""

"Did you hurt my mother?""

"No!""

"Then tell me why he's accusing you.""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

"Because he wants you to hate me.""

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"I don't need to make you hate her. She's done enough herself.""

My adoptive father suddenly pushed past Officer Miller.

"That's enough!""

The younger officer raised his weapon.

"Sir, step back!""

My father ignored him.

"Daniel has been manipulating this family since before Ryan was born.""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"Then let's stop talking and look at the evidence.""

He removed several documents and placed them on the dining table.

I approached cautiously.

The first was a photograph of my mother standing outside a hospital.

She looked tired but healthy.

The second showed Vanessa standing beside her.

The date was March 12, 2020.

Two days before my mother supposedly died.

I picked up the third photograph.

It showed my wife entering a private medical building.

"What is this?""

Daniel answered.

"Security footage from the night your mother disappeared.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Those photographs don't prove anything.""

I turned toward her.

"Then explain them.""

She pressed her lips together.

Daniel placed another document on the table.

A handwritten statement.

My mother's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

She had written birthday cards to me in the same looping script.

I began reading.

If anything happens to me, Ryan must know that his daughters are alive. Neither Daniel nor Richard can be trusted. They have made an arrangement that will destroy this family. Vanessa knows where the girls are being kept.

I stopped.

Richard.

My adoptive father's name.

I looked at him.

"Is that why you hid them?""

He stared at the paper.

"Your mother was confused.""

"She was confused?""

"She was taking medication. She was becoming paranoid.""

Daniel slammed his hand against the table.

"She was perfectly sane!""

Officer Miller raised her voice.

"Both of you, stop!""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why does she say you knew where the girls were?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"Because I did.""

The admission came so quietly that I almost didn't hear it.

I felt something inside me break.

"How long?""

"Before your mother died.""

"How long?""

"Three months.""

I stepped backward.

"You knew where my daughters were for three months while I was working, sleeping beside you, believing we had lost one child and never knowing about the other?""

She began sobbing.

"Richard told me he would destroy you if I spoke.""

I looked toward my adoptive father.

"Did you threaten my wife?""

He didn't answer.

Daniel shook his head.

"You're still protecting him.""

I turned toward him.

"And you're innocent?""

Daniel's expression tightened.

"I made mistakes.""

"That's convenient.""

He looked down.

Then he spoke.

"I was there the night your mother disappeared.""

My heart hammered.

"Where?""

"At the hospital.""

"Why?""

"She called me. She said she had proof that Richard had arranged the twins' disappearance. She wanted me to take her somewhere safe.""

"Did you?""

He nodded.

"But before we could leave, Vanessa arrived.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"That's not how it happened!""

Daniel continued.

"Your mother was frightened. She told Vanessa she was going to expose everything. They argued.""

I turned toward my wife.

"Did you argue with my mother?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Yes.""

"What about?""

"She wanted me to take the girls and leave you.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because she knew what Richard was capable of.""

Richard suddenly laughed.

"Your mother was always dramatic.""

I turned toward him.

"Shut up.""

He stopped.

Vanessa continued.

"Your mother told me that Richard had arranged for Emily and Sophie to be declared dead. She said the girls were being used to control the inheritance.""

"And what did you do?""

"I told her I couldn't leave you.""

"Then what?""

She looked down at her hands.

"She told me that if I stayed, I would never see the girls again.""

I waited.

"Then what happened?""

Vanessa began shaking.

"Richard arrived.""

Daniel nodded.

"He took your mother outside.""

My throat tightened.

"Did you see what happened?""

Vanessa looked at me.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, "I heard a gunshot.""

The room seemed to disappear.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"What?""

"I heard a gunshot from the parking lot. I ran outside, but Richard told me your mother had slipped and fallen.""

Daniel's voice was hard.

"She didn't fall.""

Richard looked at him.

"You have no proof.""

Daniel removed a small plastic evidence bag from his briefcase.

Inside was a silver ring.

My mother's wedding ring.

I recognized the tiny blue stone.

She had worn it every day of my childhood.

Daniel placed it on the table.

"This was found near the property where Richard buried her.""

I stared at him.

"Where?""

He gave me an address.

A wooded property near Cincinnati.

I remembered visiting that place once as a child.

It belonged to my adoptive father's business partner.

Richard's face had become expressionless.

Then he said something that made me realize the story was even worse.

"Your mother wasn't supposed to die.""

Nobody moved.

I looked at him.

"What did you just say?""

He lowered his eyes.

"The plan was to frighten her. Make her disappear for a few days. Convince her that nobody would believe her.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You shot her.""

Richard raised his head.

"She attacked me.""

"You buried her!""

"I panicked!""

Officer Miller immediately moved toward him.

"Richard Mitchell, put your hands behind your back.""

Richard suddenly reached into his jacket.

The younger officer shouted.

"Hands! Let me see your hands!""

But Richard didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small photograph.

He held it toward me.

It showed my mother sitting on a hospital bed.

Beside her was a newborn baby.

Not Emily.

Not Sophie.

A third child.

I stared at the photograph.

"Who is that?""

Richard looked directly into my eyes.

"Your mother had another child, Ryan.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"She gave birth to a son before you.""

My throat tightened.

"Where is he?""

Richard looked toward Daniel.

"That's the problem.""

Daniel's face had turned pale.

Richard continued.

"Your biological father didn't die in an accident. And he wasn't the only person who survived that night.""

I stared at the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten date.

March 14, 2020.

The same day my mother disappeared.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Richard smiled sadly.

"Your wife knows more than she admits.""

Then he looked at the staircase.

At Emily and Sophie, who were watching from behind Officer Miller.

And he said:

"Ask the girls what Grandpa told them about their little brother.""

Emily began crying.

Sophie covered her ears.

I crouched in front of them.

"Sweetheart, what little brother?""

Emily looked at Sophie.

Then she whispered:

"Grandpa said Mommy had another baby.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Where is he?""

Emily pointed toward the bedroom.

"He's in the secret room.""

I turned.

"What secret room?""

Sophie began crying.

"The room behind the room.""

Officer Miller immediately reached for her radio.

Richard smiled.

For the first time, I understood that the hidden walls in my house were not simply places where two little girls had been imprisoned.

They were part of something much bigger.

Something my family had been hiding for years.

And somewhere behind those walls, there might be another child.

A child who had been living in the darkness even longer than his sisters.

Then Emily grabbed my hand.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

May you like

She looked toward the bedroom door.

"Please don't let Grandpa find him again.""
