Chapter 5: The Father Who Never Died

For a moment, I couldn't move.

The man standing beside the SUV looked exactly like the person in the photograph.

The same gray eyes.

The same jawline.

The same dark crescent-shaped birthmark beneath his chin.

But there was something else.

He looked at me with the familiarity of someone who had been waiting years for this exact moment.

I stepped away from the window.

"That's him.""

Officer Miller raised her radio.

"Dispatch, I need additional units at this address. Possible suspect connected to two missing children.""

My biological father opened the SUV's rear door.

He took out a brown leather briefcase.

Then he started walking toward the house.

My father—the man who had raised me—remained beside the vehicle.

They were standing together.

Two men who had shaped my entire life without my knowledge.

Two men who apparently knew far more about my daughters than I did.

Vanessa approached the window.

When she saw Daniel, she let out a terrified gasp.

"No.""

I turned.

"You know him?""

She shook her head.

"I thought he was dead.""

"That's what everyone keeps saying.""

She grabbed my arm.

"Ryan, please. You need to understand something. Daniel isn't here to save us.""

Outside, the doorbell rang.

Officer Miller moved toward the hallway.

"Nobody opens that door.""

A man's voice came through the entrance.

"Ryan? It's time we talked.""

Daniel.

I stared at Vanessa.

"Tell me everything.""

She looked at Emily and Sophie.

Then she knelt in front of them.

"Girls, go with Officer Miller. Stay together, okay?""

Emily shook her head.

"Is Daddy Daniel here?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"Is he going to take us?""

Vanessa couldn't answer.

I crouched beside them.

"Nobody is taking you without my permission.""

Sophie looked at me.

"Even Grandpa?""

"Especially Grandpa.""

For the first time, she smiled.

It was a tiny smile, but it broke something inside me.

Officer Miller led the girls toward the hallway.

I remained with Vanessa.

"Start talking.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Daniel was my father's business partner.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Before you met me, Daniel worked with your adoptive father. They built a property investment company together.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did he say he was my father?""

"Because he was. Your biological father.""

She swallowed.

"Your mother had an affair with Daniel before she married the man who raised you. When she discovered she was pregnant, Daniel disappeared. Your adoptive father agreed to raise you as his own.""

My mind raced.

"So my father knew?""

"Yes.""

"And he never told me?""

"Your mother made him promise.""

I leaned against the dresser.

"What happened to Daniel?""

Vanessa glanced toward the front door.

"He came back into our lives shortly before Emily and Sophie were born.""

"Why?""

"Because your mother had discovered that he was alive. She contacted him, hoping he would help expose what your adoptive father had been doing with the family company.""

"What was he doing?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He was moving money. Millions of dollars. He used your name and your mother's signature to transfer assets into accounts connected to Daniel.""

I stared at her.

"Why would Daniel agree to that?""

"Because he wanted control of the estate.""

The doorbell rang again.

Daniel's voice came through.

"Ryan, I know you're listening. You deserve the truth.""

I moved toward the hallway.

Vanessa grabbed me.

"Don't.""

I turned.

"What else?""

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel was the person who told your father to hide the twins.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"Because the girls were the only legal heirs to the original estate.""

I remembered the document.

The inheritance.

The warning.

My father's voice from the recording.

Neither child can be allowed to reach the estate attorney.

Everything suddenly connected.

I stepped away from Vanessa.

"Why did you help them?""

She began crying.

"I thought I was protecting you.""

"You helped hide my daughters!""

"I know.""

"You watched them starve!""

"I know!""

Her voice cracked.

"I know, Ryan!""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she reached into her cardigan and pulled out another document.

It was a hospital discharge record.

I took it.

The date was November 18, 2018.

Both girls were listed.

Emily Mitchell.

Sophia Mitchell.

Below their names was a note.

Both infants healthy. No complications. Release authorized by attending physician.

I stared at the paper.

"They were never sick?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"Then why did you tell me Emily died?""

She covered her mouth.

"Because your father said one of the girls had been taken by Daniel. He told me the other was safe.""

I looked toward the hallway.

"Which one?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with shame.

"Emily.""

I felt sick.

"And Sophie?""

"He told me she had died.""

I looked at the two names again.

"Then you knew both were alive?""

"Not at first.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Five months ago, I heard scratching behind the closet. I thought it was an animal. Then I opened the panel and found Emily.""

I stared at her.

"You found her?""

She nodded.

"Your father had brought her into the house.""

"Why didn't you call me?""

"He threatened to tell you I had known about the arrangement from the beginning. He had documents. Messages. Everything.""

I laughed bitterly.

"So you decided to keep her hidden?""

"I was terrified.""

I looked toward the hallway.

"Where was Sophie?""

Vanessa's face changed.

"She was in another property.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

I stepped closer.

"Don't lie to me.""

She shook her head.

"Ryan, I swear.""

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Officer Miller shouted.

"Police! Stay where you are!""

Then came the sound of running footsteps.

I rushed into the hallway.

The younger officer was standing near the staircase with his weapon drawn.

"Where's Miller?""

"She went outside.""

"Why?""

He looked at the front door.

"Your father asked to speak with her.""

I looked through the window.

Daniel was standing on the porch.

My adoptive father was beside him.

Officer Miller was facing them.

Daniel held up both hands.

He appeared calm.

Almost friendly.

Then he reached into his briefcase.

Officer Miller immediately raised her weapon.

"Put it down!""

Daniel slowly withdrew a folder.

"These documents concern the children. You need to see them.""

My adoptive father stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him!""

Daniel turned.

"You've had eleven years to lie to this family.""

Then he looked directly at me.

"Ryan, there's something you need to know about your daughters.""

I opened the door before Officer Miller could stop me.

"What?""

Daniel held up a document.

"Emily and Sophie weren't hidden because they were heirs to my estate.""

I stared at him.

"Then why?""

His expression darkened.

"Because one of them witnessed what happened to your mother.""

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely white.

Daniel continued.

"And the other one knows where her body was buried.""

The document slipped from his hand.

I caught it.

It was an old police report.

At the top was my mother's name.

Beneath it was a photograph of a wooded property outside Cincinnati.

Then I saw the date.

March 2020.

The day my mother supposedly died in a hospital.

I looked at Daniel.

"Are you telling me my mother was murdered?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

My adoptive father suddenly shouted from the porch.

"He's lying!""

Daniel ignored him.

"Your mother discovered the truth about the girls. She was going to expose everything. And the night before she disappeared, she called me.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Who killed her?""

Daniel looked past me.

Toward Vanessa.

May you like

And then he said something that made the entire world stop.

"Ask your wife what she did that night.""
