Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at the man standing inside my bedroom wall.

His hair was almost entirely white now. His face was thinner, his cheeks sunken, and a deep scar ran from his left temple toward his ear.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Gray.

Cold.

The same eyes I had spent my childhood trying to avoid.

"Dad?""

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

He looked at me without smiling.

"Hello, Ryan.""

I backed away.

"No. No, you're dead.""

My father glanced at the photograph in his hand.

"That's what they told you.""

I shook my head.

"I buried you.""

"Did you?""

I remembered the funeral.

The closed casket.

The private viewing.

My mother crying so hard that two relatives had to hold her upright.

I remembered lowering a handful of dirt onto the coffin.

I remembered standing beside the grave, believing I had lost the only father I would ever have.

And now he was standing in my bedroom.

Alive.

Holding a photograph of my wife and daughter.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"What is happening?""

She was still on the floor, covering her mouth with both hands.

"Ryan, please let me explain.""

"Explain what? Why is there a child living inside our walls? Why does she look like me? And why is my dead father standing in my bedroom?""

My father stepped forward.

"Lower your voice. You're frightening the children.""

I laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"You don't get to tell me what to do.""

His expression hardened.

"You're still as emotional as your mother.""

That sentence hit me harder than I expected.

I hadn't heard anyone mention my mother in years.

She had died when I was twenty-three, shortly after my father's supposed death.

I looked at the little girl.

Emily had crawled closer to the wall. She was clutching the piece of bread Lily had given her.

I noticed something else.

Her feet were covered in small cuts.

There were bruises along her arms.

"How long has she been here?"" I asked.

Nobody answered.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"How long?""

She began crying.

"Almost five months.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Five months?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Ryan, I didn't know how to tell you.""

"You had five months!""

Emily flinched at my shouting.

I immediately lowered my voice.

"Sweetheart, it's okay. I'm not angry with you.""

I extended my hand.

She hesitated before crawling toward me.

When she reached the edge of the opening, she looked at Vanessa.

"Is Mommy going to lock me up again?""

The question made my blood run cold.

Vanessa covered her face.

My father answered instead.

"She needs to stay where she's safe.""

I turned toward him.

"Safe from what?""

"From people who would take her.""

"She's a child!""

"Exactly.""

I stepped between him and Emily.

"Nobody is taking her anywhere until I understand what's happening.""

My father studied me.

Then he slowly held out the photograph.

It showed a younger version of me standing beside Vanessa.

Lily was in my arms.

And behind us, barely visible near the edge of the picture, stood a little girl.

Emily.

I took the photograph.

The date printed on the back was October 2018.

I stared at it.

That was two years before Lily was born.

"Where did you get this?""

My father didn't answer.

I examined the picture more carefully.

Vanessa looked different. Her hair was longer. Her face was rounder.

But there was something else.

She was holding a small pink blanket.

The same blanket Emily was wearing around her shoulders.

My hands began trembling.

"Vanessa?""

She looked up.

I held out the photograph.

"Who is this child?""

Vanessa started sobbing again.

My father interrupted.

"Her name is Emily Mitchell.""

I turned slowly.

"Mitchell?""

He nodded.

"She's your daughter.""

The room went silent.

I looked at the little girl.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at my father.

"That's impossible.""

My father sighed.

"Your mother knew about her.""

I felt as though someone had punched me.

"What?""

"She knew everything.""

I shook my head.

"My mother died before Emily was born.""

"Your mother died in March 2020. Emily was born in November 2018.""

I stared at him.

My mind struggled to connect the dates.

November 2018.

I remembered that year.

Vanessa and I had been married for only a few months.

We were living in a rented apartment downtown.

But I had been traveling constantly for work.

I had spent three weeks in Denver, then another month in Chicago.

I remembered coming home to find Vanessa unusually quiet.

I remembered her telling me she had lost a pregnancy.

I remembered holding her while she cried.

I had never questioned her.

"You're lying," I whispered.

My father shook his head.

"Ask your wife.""

I turned.

Vanessa was staring at the floor.

"Tell me he's lying.""

She pressed her palms against her eyes.

"Ryan...""

"Look at me!""

She finally raised her head.

And I saw the answer before she spoke.

"I was pregnant," she whispered.

My knees nearly gave way.

"What?""

"Before Lily. I was pregnant with Emily.""

I looked toward the child.

She was watching me with an expression I couldn't bear.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"I wanted to.""

"Then why didn't you?""

"Because your father said you couldn't know.""

I turned toward the old man.

"What did you do?""

He placed the photograph on the dresser.

"At the time, I believed I was protecting the family.""

I stepped toward him.

"You don't get to use that word.""

He ignored me.

"Emily was born with a serious medical condition. Your mother discovered the truth about certain arrangements I had made. She threatened to expose me.""

"What arrangements?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

"She knows.""

Vanessa shook her head desperately.

"Please don't make me do this.""

I stared at her.

"Make you do what? Tell me what happened to my daughter?""

She began speaking through tears.

"Your father arranged for Emily to be placed in a private facility after she was born. He said she needed specialist care. He told me it was temporary.""

I felt sick.

"Why would he do that?""

"He said the family would be destroyed if anyone found out about the circumstances of her birth.""

I looked at my father.

"What circumstances?""

He said nothing.

Emily suddenly reached for my hand.

Her fingers were ice-cold.

"Daddy?""

I crouched.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

She looked at me carefully.

"Are you going to make me go back?""

I couldn't answer.

Instead, I pulled off my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

"No one is taking you anywhere without explaining everything.""

She leaned against my chest.

Her small body trembled.

Then she whispered something that made me look up sharply.

"Grandpa said Mommy would be angry if I told you about the other baby.""

I froze.

"What other baby?""

Emily pointed toward the darkness behind her.

"There's another little girl.""

Vanessa made a strangled sound.

My father closed his eyes.

I stood up.

"Who else is in there?""

Nobody answered.

Then, from somewhere deep inside the wall, I heard a faint voice.

"Emily?""

The little girl immediately turned.

Her face filled with terror.

"She's awake.""

My father moved toward the opening.

I grabbed his arm.

"Don't you dare.""

He looked at me.

May you like

And for the first time since appearing from the darkness, he looked genuinely afraid.

"Ryan, listen to me carefully. Whatever you do, don't let that second child come out.""
