Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Locked Door

"Ryan, don't open that door.""

My father's voice was barely recognizable.

For eleven years, I had remembered him as a man who never showed fear. He had faced financial disasters, family arguments, and even a house fire without losing his composure.

But now, standing in my bedroom with two terrified little girls behind me, he looked like a man watching his entire life collapse.

The doorbell rang again.

"POLICE! WE NEED YOU TO OPEN THE DOOR!""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was clutching the folded document against her chest.

"Who are they?"" I asked.

"Police," she whispered.

"I know that. Why are you frightened?""

She looked toward my father.

He shook his head.

"Don't believe anything they say.""

I laughed in disbelief.

"After everything you've done, you're still telling me whom to trust?""

A loud knock shook the front door.

"Sir, we received a report of two missing children. We need to speak with the occupants.""

Two missing children.

My daughters.

I hurried into the hallway.

My father grabbed my shoulder.

"Listen to me. If they ask about the girls, tell them you found them here today. Nothing more.""

I pulled away.

"That's exactly what happened.""

His expression changed.

"Ryan, you don't understand. The moment you tell them about the hidden rooms, they'll take the children.""

"Good. They need medical attention.""

"They'll separate them.""

I stopped.

"What?""

He leaned closer.

"The people who have been looking for these girls have connections everywhere. The police may already be working for them.""

I stared at him.

"You expect me to believe every police officer in this town is involved?""

"I expect you to understand that money buys people.""

The front door shook again.

I walked away from him.

When I opened it, two uniformed officers stood on the porch.

A woman with short blonde hair introduced herself as Officer Miller. Beside her was a younger male officer holding a small tablet.

"Mr. Mitchell?""

"Yes.""

"We received a report about children being held inside this property. Is everyone safe?""

I glanced toward the bedroom.

"No. I found two little girls hidden behind the walls. They're frightened, hungry, and possibly injured.""

Officer Miller's expression immediately hardened.

"Where are they?""

"Upstairs.""

She stepped inside.

"Is there anyone else in the house?""

I hesitated.

"My father.""

The officer looked at me.

"Your father?""

"He's been missing for eleven years. I found him inside the same hidden space.""

She exchanged a glance with her partner.

"Mr. Mitchell, I need you to stay here.""

They climbed the stairs.

I followed.

When we reached the bedroom, Emily was sitting beside Sophie, holding her sister's hand.

Vanessa was kneeling in front of them.

My father was nowhere to be seen.

"Where is he?"" I asked.

I looked toward the closet.

The wooden panel was open.

The passage was empty.

Officer Miller immediately drew her flashlight.

"Sir, who are you talking about?""

"My father. He was standing right there.""

The younger officer inspected the opening.

"There's another exit.""

I hadn't noticed it before.

Behind the second chamber was a narrow passage leading toward the attic.

Officer Miller turned to me.

"Did this man leave through there?""

"I don't know.""

She crouched beside the girls.

"Hello, sweetheart. My name is Karen. You're not in trouble. Can you tell me your names?""

"I'm Emily," the first girl whispered.

"And I'm Sophie.""

Officer Miller smiled gently.

"You're both very brave.""

Sophie looked at her sister.

"Can we stay together?""

The officer's smile faded slightly.

"Of course. We'll do everything we can.""

I watched as she examined their wrists and faces.

Then she noticed the silver necklace around Sophie's neck.

"Where did you get this, sweetheart?""

Sophie covered it with her hand.

"Grandpa gave it to me.""

Officer Miller carefully looked closer.

"May I see it?""

Sophie hesitated, then removed the necklace.

A small silver pendant hung from it.

There was a symbol engraved on the front.

A circle divided by three vertical lines.

Officer Miller suddenly stopped moving.

She turned the pendant over.

On the back were two letters.

D.M.

"Where did this come from?"" she asked.

Sophie shrugged.

"Grandpa said it belonged to Daddy Daniel.""

Officer Miller looked at me.

"Mr. Mitchell, do you know someone named Daniel Mitchell?""

I remembered the document.

"Apparently, he was my biological father.""

Her expression changed.

She stood and walked toward the hallway.

"Detective Harris needs to hear about this.""

I followed her.

"Why?""

She lowered her voice.

"Because Daniel Mitchell was reported dead in a case involving a missing inheritance and two newborn children.""

My stomach dropped.

"Two newborn children?""

She nodded.

"Identical twin girls. Both were officially declared deceased.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. They're standing in my bedroom.""

"Which is why we're going to need some answers.""

Before I could respond, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

"Please don't take them.""

Officer Miller turned.

"Ma'am, we need to get them examined.""

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Ryan, don't let them separate the girls.""

I looked at her.

"You've had five months to protect them. You don't get to tell me what to do now.""

She lowered her head.

"I know.""

Her voice was so quiet that I almost missed the next words.

"But there's something I haven't told you.""

Officer Miller looked toward the children.

"Let's give them a moment.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"When Emily and Sophie were born, your father told me that Daniel had died. He said he had arranged everything to protect us.""

"Why would you believe him?""

"Because he showed me a death certificate. He showed me photographs from the accident. He even took me to a funeral.""

I remembered the closed casket at my own father's funeral.

"Did you know Daniel was my biological father?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Your mother told me before she died.""

My throat tightened.

"And you never thought I deserved to know?""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

She looked toward the empty closet.

"Your father told me that if you ever learned the truth, the girls would disappear.""

I stared at her.

Then I noticed something.

She wasn't looking at me.

She was looking at the floor beside the bed.

A small black device was attached underneath the wooden frame.

I crouched.

It was a recording device.

A tiny red light blinked.

I pulled it loose.

"What's this?""

Vanessa went completely still.

Officer Miller hurried over.

"Where did you find that?""

"Under the bed.""

The officer examined it.

"Someone has been recording this room.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

Then the device crackled.

A man's voice filled the bedroom.

It was my father's voice.

"If Ryan finds the girls, initiate the second arrangement. Neither child can be allowed to reach the estate attorney.""

The recording continued.

A second voice answered.

"Understood. What about Ryan?""

My father's reply was chilling.

"He's expendable.""

I stared at the device.

The second voice sounded familiar.

I had heard it somewhere before.

Then Officer Miller looked at me.

"Mr. Mitchell, I think we need to get you and your family somewhere safe.""

Before I could answer, her radio crackled.

A voice came through.

"Officer Miller, we have a problem. The man you described is outside.""

She grabbed her weapon.

"Where?""

The response came immediately.

"He's in the driveway.""

I rushed to the bedroom window.

A black SUV was parked beside my mailbox.

The passenger door opened.

My father stepped out.

But he wasn't alone.

A second man emerged from the driver's side.

And when I saw his face, I felt my knees weaken.

It was the man from the photograph.

Daniel Mitchell.

My biological father.

The man who had supposedly died before I was born.

He looked directly up at my bedroom window.

May you like

Then he raised one hand.

And smiled.
