Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything
Daniel Price sat at the dining table with a glass of water trembling between his hands.
Officer Daniels had asked him to come inside voluntarily and explain his involvement in the disputed property transfer. Another officer remained nearby while Marcus, Robert, and Evelyn listened from the opposite side of the table.
Vanessa had been taken to the living room for further questioning. She could no longer control the conversation, and every time she heard Daniel's voice, she turned toward the dining room.
Daniel looked exhausted.
His tie was crooked, his eyes were bloodshot, and a faint line of sweat glistened along his forehead.
"Mr. Price," Officer Daniels began, "you are listed as a witness on a property transfer agreement that Mr. Williams says he never signed. Did you witness his signature?""
Daniel stared at his hands.
"No.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Then why is your name on the document?""
"Because I made a terrible mistake.""
"That isn't an answer.""
Officer Daniels raised a hand.
"Marcus, please let him explain.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Three weeks ago, Vanessa contacted me and said Robert wanted help organizing his estate. She told me he had decided to transfer the house to Marcus and wanted to make sure everything was documented properly.""
Robert shook his head.
"I never told her that.""
"I know that now," Daniel replied.
"At the time, I believed her.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"You've known my father for years. Why didn't you call him directly?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"She told me he was embarrassed about his finances and didn't want to discuss the matter with anyone else. She said she'd been asked to handle the paperwork.""
"And you believed that?""
"Yes.""
Marcus pushed back his chair.
"You signed a document transferring a seventy-year-old man's house without speaking to him?""
Daniel flinched.
"I didn't sign as a notary. I signed as a witness to what I was told was a preliminary agreement. I should have checked everything. I didn't.""
Officer Daniels studied him.
"Did you see Robert Williams sign the document?""
"No.""
"Did you knowingly sign a false statement?""
Daniel hesitated.
"I knew the paperwork wasn't complete. Vanessa told me Robert had already agreed verbally and that the formal signature would be obtained later. She asked me to sign the witness section because she said I had helped prepare the paperwork.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Then how did your name end up on a completed agreement?""
Daniel reached into his jacket and removed his phone.
"Because she showed me a recording.""
Robert gripped the table.
"What recording?""
Daniel opened a folder on his phone.
"I received a video from Vanessa the following week. It showed Robert sitting at a desk, holding a pen. She told me it proved he'd signed the transfer and that the paperwork was now complete.""
Marcus's face tightened.
"Show us.""
Daniel hesitated before placing the phone on the table.
The video showed Robert sitting in his study.
He wore the blue sweater he'd worn on the day Vanessa had pulled him into the bedroom. A stack of papers lay in front of him. Someone stood outside the camera's view.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
"Just sign the last page, Robert. It's the insurance paperwork.""
Robert's recorded voice answered, "I already told you I'm not signing anything else until I read it.""
The woman laughed.
"You've read enough. It's just a routine form.""
The video ended.
Robert stared at the screen.
"That's my study," he whispered.
Marcus looked at his father.
"Do you remember that?""
"Yes. She brought papers to the house and asked me to sign them. I refused.""
Daniel nodded miserably.
"Vanessa told me the video showed him agreeing to the transfer. I believed her explanation, even though the clip never showed a signature.""
Officer Daniels looked sharply at him.
"You knew the footage didn't show the document being signed?""
Daniel's face reddened.
"I should have questioned it. I didn't. I wanted to believe the paperwork was legitimate because I'd already put my name on it.""
Marcus shook his head in disbelief.
"You helped her make it look real.""
"Yes.""
The admission landed heavily.
Daniel didn't try to defend himself.
"I was careless, and I may have helped her commit a crime. I'll cooperate fully with the investigation.""
Officer Daniels asked him to preserve the original video, the message history, and any documents Vanessa had sent. She explained that investigators would need to establish where the footage came from, whether it had been edited, and how the property agreement had been created.
Then Daniel revealed something else.
"There's another recording.""
Everyone turned toward him.
"What recording?"" Marcus asked.
Daniel unlocked his phone again.
"Vanessa sent it to me the night before the accusation against Robert. She said it was insurance in case you started asking questions.""
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"Insurance against what?""
Daniel pressed play.
The video showed a parked car at night. The interior light illuminated Vanessa's face. She appeared calm, wearing a dark jacket, with her hair pulled back.
Her voice came through the phone speaker.
"If Marcus discovers the missing money, I'll tell him Robert was responsible. He's old, and he's already confused about his accounts. Nobody will question it.""
Marcus stared at the screen.
Vanessa continued.
"Once Robert is removed from the house, I can get Marcus to sign the transfer papers. He'll be too frightened of a public scandal to fight me.""
A second voice came from outside the camera's view.
"What if he doesn't believe you?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Then I'll give him a reason to.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Marcus felt as if the room had been stripped of oxygen.
He had married the woman in that video. He had shared his bed with her, trusted her with his business worries, and defended her when his parents complained about her behavior.
And all along, she had been planning to destroy his father and steal the house.
Officer Daniels held out her hand.
"Mr. Price, please preserve that recording in its original form. We'll need to document how you received it and verify its authenticity.""
Daniel nodded.
"Of course.""
Marcus rose from his chair.
He couldn't remain in the room another second.
He walked into the living room, where Vanessa sat on the sofa with an officer nearby.
When she saw him, she stood.
"Marcus, thank God. Tell them we need to talk privately.""
He stopped several feet away.
"Why?""
"Because this has gone too far.""
"How far did you intend to take it?""
Her eyes flickered toward the dining room.
"What did Daniel tell you?""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Enough.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"He's lying. He's trying to protect himself.""
"He showed us the recording.""
Her face went blank.
For the first time, Marcus saw the mask slip completely.
"What recording?"" she whispered.
"The one where you explain how you planned to blame Dad for the missing money. The one where you say you'll use the accusation to get the house.""
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
"That video is edited.""
"Then investigators can examine it.""
"You don't understand what you're doing!""
"No," Marcus said quietly.
"I finally understand what you've been doing.""
She reached for his hand.
"Baby, please. We can fix this.""
He stepped back.
"Don't call me that.""
Tears appeared in her eyes.
"You're going to throw away our marriage because of one mistake?""
"One mistake?"" Marcus repeated.
"You accused my father of a horrific crime. You planned to take his house. You may have been involved in stealing his savings. And you used me as part of the plan.""
"I did it because I was desperate!""
"For what?""
She opened her mouth, but no answer came.
Marcus shook his head.
"You had a home. You had a husband who trusted you. My father treated you like his own daughter.
You could have asked for help. Instead, you tried to destroy him.""
Vanessa's tears dried.
Her face hardened.
"You think you're better than me because you have money?""
"No.""
"You think your father is some saint?""
"No.""
"Then stop acting like I'm the only person who's ever done something wrong!""
Marcus looked at her for a long moment.
"I'm not saying I'm perfect. I'm saying I won't help you hurt innocent people.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she leaned forward and whispered, "You'd better hope Daniel tells the whole story.""
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She smiled faintly.
"Ask him what he was paid.""
Before Marcus could respond, Officer Daniels stepped into the room.
"Vanessa, I need you to accompany me while we continue the interview.""
Vanessa's expression changed instantly.
"Am I under arrest?""
"At this stage, we're gathering information and determining what further steps are appropriate. Please come with me.""
She picked up her purse.
As she passed Marcus, she stopped.
"You still don't know everything.""
Marcus didn't answer.
She followed the officer down the hallway.
A few minutes later, Daniel approached Marcus in the study.
"I need to tell you about the money," he said.
Marcus folded his arms.
"How much did she pay you?""
Daniel looked down.
"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""
Marcus stared at him.
"You took twenty-five thousand dollars to help transfer my father's house?""
"I was told it was a legitimate estate-planning arrangement. I thought the money was a consulting fee.""
"Did you return it?""
"Not yet.""
Marcus shook his head slowly.
Daniel reached into his jacket and placed a small envelope on the desk.
"I brought everything I have. Bank records, messages, the original files, and the payment receipt. I'm not asking you to forgive me.""
"Good," Marcus replied.
"Because that's not your decision to make.""
Daniel nodded.
Then he took out one final document.
"This is the part I couldn't understand. Vanessa told me the property transfer was only one piece of a larger plan. She said the money from your father's warehouse sale had already been moved somewhere safe.""
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
"Where?""
Daniel turned the document around.
It was a bank statement showing a transfer to an account held by a company Marcus had never heard of.
The company had been registered only four months earlier.
Its listed director was Vanessa Williams.
But the name beneath hers made Marcus's blood run cold.
*Marcus Williams.*
He stared at the page.
"I never opened this company.""
Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.
"I know. That's why I'm afraid.""
Marcus looked up.
"What else did she do?""
Daniel swallowed hard.
"Vanessa didn't just use your father's identity. She may have used yours, too.""
Marcus snatched the statement from the desk and examined the account details.
At the bottom of the page was a transaction description.
*LOAN DISBURSEMENT — $600,000.*
His hands began to shake.
Six hundred thousand dollars.
A loan he had never requested.
A company he had never created.
And his name attached to both.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed the number of his company's bank.
Marcus answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A woman's professional voice came through the line.
"Mr. Williams, this is the fraud department. We need to verify several recent transactions connected to your business. We've received a request to transfer six hundred thousand dollars from a newly established corporate account.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Freeze everything," he said.
"I didn't authorize any of it.""
There was a brief pause.
"Understood. However, sir, there's one additional issue. The loan application contains your electronic signature, and the funds have already been partially withdrawn.""
Marcus looked toward the doorway where his father stood, listening.
"How much has been withdrawn?""
The woman checked her records.
"Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
Marcus gripped the phone so tightly his fingers hurt.
Then the bank employee added one final sentence.
"And Mr. Williams, the withdrawal request was submitted less than an hour ago.""
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa had been questioned by police.
Her property transfer scheme was under investigation.
Her recordings had been discovered.
Yet somehow, even as the walls closed in around her, someone had continued moving the money.
Someone who knew exactly where it was.
Someone who might still be helping her.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Who else knows about this company?""
Daniel's face drained of color.
He opened his mouth.
May you like
Then he whispered a name that neither Marcus nor Robert had expected to hear.
"Evelyn.""
