Chapter 2: The Camera She Forgot About

For three seconds, the house was completely silent.

Then Vanessa laughed nervously.

“What camera, baby?””

Marcus stood in the hallway, his phone in his hand. His expression had changed from anger to confusion, and the confusion was quickly hardening into suspicion.

“The little security camera I installed last month,” he replied.

“The one facing the upstairs hallway.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“Oh, that thing? I thought it was broken.””

“Why would you think that?””

“Because the light was off.”” She looked toward Evelyn.

“Your mother said those cheap cameras stop working all the time.””

Evelyn frowned.

“I never said that.””

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

“Well, maybe I misunderstood.””

Marcus didn't answer. He opened an app on his phone and tapped the camera icon.

A loading circle appeared.

Vanessa watched it turn.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

“Marcus,” she said, forcing a small laugh, “why are you doing this? Your wife just told you what happened, and now you're treating me like a criminal.””

“I'm checking something.””

“Something?”” Her voice rose.

“You mean you're checking whether your own father is innocent instead of believing me?””

Marcus finally looked up.

“I'm checking what happened in this house.””

Vanessa's lower lip trembled.

“You promised you would protect me.””

“I will protect you if someone hurt you.””

“And you don't believe me?””

“I didn't say that.””

“You don't have to!””

She snatched a pillow from the bed and hurled it across the room. It struck the wall beside the closet.

Evelyn flinched.

“Vanessa, calm down,” Evelyn said.

“Let Marcus look at the recording.””

Vanessa spun toward her mother-in-law.

“You too?””

Evelyn stiffened.

“I'm trying to help.””

“No, you're not!”” Vanessa shouted.

“You're standing there while your son questions me about the worst thing that has ever happened to me!””

Marcus raised one hand.

“Enough. Nobody is accusing you of anything yet.””

“Yet?”” Vanessa repeated.

Her face crumpled, and fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.

“Fine. Go ahead. Watch your precious video. Maybe afterward you can explain to me why I should stay married to a man who thinks I'm a liar.””

Marcus looked back at his phone.

The loading circle disappeared.

A video thumbnail appeared.

He tapped it.

The recording began at 10:17 that morning.

The hallway was empty. Sunlight fell through the narrow window at the end of the corridor. A cleaning cart stood near the staircase, and the bedroom door remained closed.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She looked directly toward the camera.

Marcus leaned closer to the screen.

“Why is she looking at it?”” he murmured.

Evelyn stepped beside him.

“What do you mean?””

“She's looking straight at the lens.””

On the screen, Vanessa glanced down the hallway, adjusted her hair, and walked toward the bedroom.

A few seconds later, Robert appeared at the top of the stairs carrying a small paper bag.

He paused when he saw Vanessa.

She stepped out of the bedroom, grabbed his arm, and pulled him inside.

The door slammed shut.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“That can't be…” she whispered.

“Keep watching,” Marcus said.

The video continued.

Inside the bedroom, the camera could not see what happened beyond the partially visible doorway. But the hallway microphone captured a muffled exchange.

Robert's voice came first.

“Vanessa, let go of me!””

Then Vanessa's voice.

“Just do what I tell you!””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“What did she just say?””

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Give me that phone!””

Marcus turned away.

“Don't touch me.””

“Marcus, that's not what happened!””

“Then explain it!””

She grabbed his sleeve.

“I was frightened! I didn't know what he was going to do!””

The recording continued.

A loud bang came from behind the bedroom door.

Then another.

Then Vanessa's scream.

“HELP! SOMEBODY SAVE ME!””

Marcus paused the video.

He looked at his wife.

“Why did you drag him into your bedroom?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn slowly lowered her hand from her face.

“Vanessa,” she whispered, “answer him.””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain!”” Marcus snapped.

Vanessa backed toward the bed.

“He came upstairs, and I thought he was going to—”

“Going to what?””

“I don't know!””

“You just accused him of trying to force himself on you!””

“Because he was acting strangely!””

Marcus glanced at the phone.

“Strangely enough that you had to grab his arm and pull him into a room?””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“You weren't there!””

“No, I wasn't. That's why I'm watching the video.””

She stared at him, her breathing growing uneven.

For the first time since she had begun screaming, Vanessa seemed to understand that she might not be able to control what happened next.

Marcus pressed play again.

The camera showed him and Evelyn rushing upstairs. They opened the bedroom door, and Vanessa threw herself into Marcus's arms.

Then came the accusation.

Then Evelyn's slap.

Marcus stopped the video again.

He looked sick.

“Mom,” he said quietly, “you hit Dad.””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I believed her.””

“So did I.””

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Then Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“You made us believe he had done something unforgivable.””

“I was scared!”” Vanessa shouted.

“Of what?””

She looked at the door.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa, look at me.””

She didn't.

“Look at me!””

Her gaze snapped back to his.

“What?”” she demanded.

“Why did you do it?””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Because nobody in this family respects me!””

Marcus stared at her.

“What does that have to do with my father?””

“Everything!”” she screamed.

“He treats me like a servant. He criticizes everything I do. He thinks because he's old and owns this house, he can control everybody!””

From the kitchen downstairs, Robert heard the shouting.

He slowly rose from his chair and climbed the staircase, holding the railing for support.

When he reached the hallway, he heard Vanessa's next words.

“I was tired of being humiliated in this house!””

Robert appeared in the doorway.

“Then you should have told us,” he said, his voice breaking.

“You should have spoken to me like a human being. Why would you destroy my name?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

For a moment, the two stared at each other.

Then she pointed at him.

“Get out!””

Robert didn't move.

“This is my home.””

“Not anymore!””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She grabbed her purse from the bed and began stuffing clothes into it.

“Fine. I'll leave. I'll go to the police myself. I'll tell them your father is dangerous, and I'll tell them you helped him cover it up.””

Marcus looked at her in disbelief.

“You just watched the recording.””

“I know what happened to me!””

“You watched yourself pull him into the room!””

Vanessa zipped the purse with such force that the sound seemed to slice through the silence.

“You think one video proves everything?””

Marcus hesitated.

The camera had recorded the hallway, not the entire bedroom. It showed who entered and who left, but it couldn't reveal every movement behind the closed door.

Vanessa saw his hesitation.

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

“There,” she whispered.

“You don't know everything, do you?””

Marcus looked back at the recording.

“No,” he admitted.

“I don't.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Exactly.””

Then she walked toward the door.

But as she passed Robert, something slipped from the pocket of her purse and landed on the floor.

A small, folded piece of paper.

Vanessa didn't notice.

Robert did.

He bent slowly, picked it up, and unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the handwritten words.

His face turned white.

At the top of the paper was a date from three weeks earlier.

Beneath it was a sentence that made his hands begin to shake.

*“Step One: Make Robert Williams look dangerous. Step Two: Get Marcus to sign over the house.””*

Robert looked up.

Vanessa was standing in the doorway, staring at the paper in his hands.

For the first time that afternoon, she wasn't pretending to cry.

She was terrified.

And Marcus, seeing his father's expression, reached for the paper.

“Vanessa,” he whispered, “what exactly have you been planning?””
