Chapter 3: The Plan to Steal His Home
Vanessa lunged for the paper.
“Give that to me!””
Robert stepped back, clutching it against his chest.
“No.””
“It's private!””
“Private?”” Robert's voice shook.
“You tried to ruin my life, and now you want to talk about privacy?””
Vanessa reached for him again.
Marcus caught her wrist.
“Don't.””
She jerked her arm away.
“Let go of me!””
“Then stop trying to take the paper!””
Evelyn stood near the bedroom window, looking between them with a stunned expression. The room still smelled of Vanessa's perfume and the sharp chemical scent of lipstick. The torn blouse lay on the bed like evidence from a crime scene.
Marcus held out his hand toward his father.
“Dad, let me see it.””
Robert hesitated, then passed him the note.
Marcus unfolded it.
He read the first line.
Then the second.
His lips parted, but no sound came out.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“It's not what you think.””
Marcus looked up slowly.
“Then tell me what it is.””
She glanced at the note.
“It's a draft. I write things down when I'm angry. You know that.””
“A draft of what?”” Marcus asked.
“A plan to make my father look dangerous?””
“I was venting!””
“And the house?””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“Your father has been talking about changing his will for months. He wants to leave everything to charity instead of helping us.””
Robert looked genuinely confused.
“I never said that.””
“You told Marcus you wanted to give the house to a veterans' organization!””
“I said I was considering donating a portion of my estate after I died!””
“And what about us?”” Vanessa demanded.
“What about the family you supposedly love?””
Robert stared at her.
“I helped you buy your first car. I paid for the renovations when you moved in. I even covered your credit card bills when Marcus's business struggled. What more did you want from me?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Maybe I wanted to stop living at the mercy of a man who thinks every dollar he spends gives him the right to control us.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Dad never controlled us.””
“He controlled everything!””
“He gave us a place to live!””
“And he reminds me of it every chance he gets!””
Robert looked down at the carpet.
He remembered the argument Vanessa was referring to. Three weeks earlier, he had asked her not to replace the kitchen cabinets without discussing the expense with Marcus. The house belonged to Robert, and he had been planning repairs of his own.
That was all.
He had never insulted her.
Never threatened her.
Never touched her in anger.
Yet somehow, a disagreement over cabinets had become the foundation of a plan to destroy him.
“Vanessa,” he said softly, “if you wanted us to sell the house, we could have discussed it. If you wanted your own home, I could have helped you find one. Why did you have to do this?””
She stared at him without answering.
Marcus looked down at the note again.
“There's something else,” he said.
He turned the paper over.
On the back were several more lines, written in the same handwriting.
*“If he is arrested, Marcus will panic. Tell him the only way to protect the family is to transfer the property before the investigation becomes public.””*
Below that was a final sentence.
*“Make sure Evelyn believes everything.””*
Evelyn made a small, broken sound.
She sank into the nearest chair.
“You planned to use me?””
Vanessa's expression shifted.
“Evelyn, listen—”
“You knew I'd believe you!”” Evelyn interrupted.
“You knew I'd be horrified if I thought my own husband had hurt you!””
“I didn't know you would slap him!””
“But you knew I'd turn against him!””
Vanessa's silence answered the question.
Evelyn pressed a hand to her mouth.
For years, she had defended Vanessa when Robert complained that the young woman spent too much money. She had told her husband to be patient, insisting that Vanessa was still adjusting to married life.
She had even argued with Marcus when he suggested that his wife needed to contribute more to the household.
Now she remembered every occasion when Vanessa had subtly encouraged her to see Robert as stubborn, controlling, and selfish.
Small complaints.
Carefully planted doubts.
A story repeated until it became believable.
“Oh, God,” Evelyn whispered.
“How long have you been doing this?””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You're all acting like I'm some kind of monster.””
Marcus held up the note.
“Who wrote this?””
“I did.””
The answer came so quickly that nobody moved.
Vanessa seemed to realize her mistake.
She swallowed.
“I mean, I wrote it when I was upset. It doesn't mean I intended to do anything.””
“Then why did you carry it around?”” Marcus asked.
“I forgot it was in my purse!””
“Convenient.””
Her eyes flashed.
“Don't talk to me like that!””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You accused my seventy-year-old father of trying to assault you. You let my mother slap him. You stood there while he cried and begged us to believe him. And now you're telling me it was just a bad day?””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“He deserved to be frightened!””
Robert flinched.
Marcus stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
But the words had already escaped.
“He thinks he can do whatever he wants because this is his house! He treats me like I'm nothing!””
Robert's voice was barely audible.
“So you decided to make me look like a criminal?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I wanted you out of the way.””
The room went silent.
Even the distant hum of traffic outside seemed to disappear.
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
“Out of the way of what?””
Vanessa looked from him to Robert, then to Evelyn.
For the first time, she seemed to understand how much she had revealed.
“I didn't mean it like that.””
“Then explain what you meant,” Marcus said.
She backed away.
“I want a divorce.””
Marcus gave a hollow laugh.
“That's your answer?””
“I don't have to stand here and be interrogated!””
She grabbed her purse.
Marcus moved toward the door, blocking her path.
“Sit down. We're calling the police.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“You wouldn't dare.””
“I would.””
“You'll destroy your marriage!””
“You destroyed it yourself.””
She stared at him, searching his face for the uncertainty she had relied on all afternoon.
When she found none, her voice changed.
It became quieter.
More deliberate.
“Marcus, think about this. If the police get involved, your father's name will still be connected to an accusation of sexual misconduct. Even if you believe he's innocent, people will talk.
Your business associates will hear about it. Your clients will hear about it.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“So that's why you thought this would work? You thought I would protect my reputation instead of my father?””
“I thought you'd protect your family!””
“My family is standing right here.””
He turned toward Robert and Evelyn.
His mother was crying silently.
His father stood with his shoulders bent, looking suddenly older than seventy.
Marcus had never felt so ashamed.
He had believed Vanessa before asking a single question. He had allowed fear and outrage to overwhelm the years of trust he owed his father.
“Dad,” he said, his voice breaking, “I'm sorry.””
Robert looked at him.
Marcus swallowed hard.
“I should have listened to you.””
Robert tried to answer, but emotion closed his throat. He simply placed a trembling hand on his son's shoulder.
For one brief moment, Marcus was a little boy again, standing beside the man who had taught him how to ride a bicycle, tie his shoes, and face the world without fear.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“You're making a huge mistake.””
Marcus released his father's shoulder and reached for his phone.
“No. I'm finally correcting one.””
He dialed emergency services.
Vanessa's composure shattered.
“Marcus, don't!””
He gave the dispatcher their address and explained that a serious domestic incident had occurred. He told them there was a disputed accusation, that they had security footage, and that everyone was still at the property.
Vanessa paced the bedroom.
“You can't do this to me!””
Marcus continued speaking.
“There's also a written note suggesting a plan to make a false accusation in order to obtain property.””
Vanessa stopped pacing.
Then she looked at Robert.
Her expression was no longer frightened.
It was furious.
“You old fool,” she whispered.
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“Don't you dare speak to him that way!””
Vanessa ignored her.
“You think you've won because you found a piece of paper?””
Robert held her gaze.
“No. I think I've finally seen who you are.””
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
Marcus watched her fingers move rapidly across the screen.
“Who are you calling?”” he demanded.
She didn't answer.
Instead, she lifted the phone to her ear.
When someone picked up, her voice became calm and controlled.
“It's me,” she said.
“We have a problem.””
Marcus moved closer.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa turned her back to him.
“He found the note. And Marcus is calling the police.””
A pause.
Then she whispered something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
“No. The original agreement is still safe. He doesn't know about the signature.””
She listened for several seconds.
Then she said, “I understand. I'll do it now.””
Vanessa ended the call and slipped her phone into her purse.
Marcus stared at her.
“What signature?””
She smiled faintly.
It was the same smile Robert had seen before the accusation—the expression of someone who believed she was several steps ahead of everyone else.
“You'll find out soon enough,” she said.
Then she walked past Marcus, descended the stairs, and headed straight for Robert's study.
Robert followed as quickly as his aching legs would allow.
“Vanessa! Get away from my desk!””
She reached the study before him, yanked open the bottom drawer, and pulled out a thick manila folder.
Marcus rushed downstairs behind them.
“Put that down!””
Vanessa held the folder against her chest.
“You want to know about the signature?”” she asked, her eyes fixed on Marcus.
She opened the folder and pulled out a document bearing Robert's name.
Then she turned it toward them.
At the bottom of the page was a signature that looked unmistakably like Robert Williams's.
Marcus went pale.
Because the document wasn't a will.
May you like
It was a property transfer agreement.
And according to the date printed at the top, Robert had supposedly signed his entire house over to Vanessa three weeks earlier.
