Chapter 7: The Phone That Shouldn’t Ring
The phone inside the metal box kept ringing.
No one moved.
Marcus stared at the screen.
*DAD.*
The old phone was cracked along one corner. Its casing was yellowed with age. It looked like something that had been forgotten in a drawer for decades.
But the screen was bright.
And it was calling him.
Ava whispered, “Dad… that's Grandpa.””
Marcus swallowed.
“My father died nine years ago.””
“I know.””
The phone rang again.
Evelyn reached toward it.
Marcus stopped her.
“Don't.””
“Why?””
“Because if that's really connected to him…”
He couldn't finish.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Marcus, let me check it.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He picked up the phone himself.
The ringing stopped.
A message appeared.
*ANSWER THE CALL.*
Marcus stared.
Then the phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID changed.
*MARCUS HALE.*
His own name.
He answered.
“Who is this?””
Static.
Then a man's voice.
Old.
Weak.
But unmistakably familiar.
“Marcus.””
Marcus nearly dropped the phone.
His father's voice.
“Dad?””
Ava covered her mouth.
Evelyn grabbed Marcus's arm.
The voice continued.
“If you're hearing this, the plan failed.””
Marcus couldn't breathe.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“I've been dead for nine years.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“So this is a recording?””
“Yes.””
He exhaled.
His hands were shaking.
The recording continued.
“I knew Graham would try to take control of the company. I knew Vanessa would be pressured into helping him. And I knew one day someone would discover the trust.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
His father's voice continued.
“Marcus, there is something I never told you.””
The line crackled.
“Evelyn was never the person the trust was created to protect.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then who?””
The recording answered.
“You.””
Marcus stared at the phone.
“Me?””
“Yes. The trust was created because I knew your life would eventually be controlled by someone else.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“What does that mean?””
The recording continued.
“Samuel is not your half-brother.””
Everyone froze.
Vanessa's face went white.
Samuel's voice suddenly came through the phone.
“You should have listened to the rest.””
Marcus spun around.
Samuel stood in the garage entrance.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
He didn't need one.
His expression was calm.
Almost amused.
“You're lying,” Marcus said.
Samuel smiled.
“Your father always did enjoy his little games.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“Who are you?””
Samuel's smile disappeared.
“My name is Samuel Pierce.””
“You're Graham's son.””
“I was raised by Graham.””
“That isn't what Vanessa said.””
“Vanessa says whatever keeps her alive.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Samuel, don't.””
He looked at her.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
“She knows the truth.””
Samuel's eyes narrowed.
“So do you.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What truth?””
Samuel pointed at the phone.
“Your father recorded that message years ago.””
Marcus looked down.
Samuel continued.
“But he never got to finish it.””
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Samuel smiled.
“Because I deleted the final recording.””
Marcus's stomach dropped.
“Then what am I hearing?””
Samuel looked at Evelyn.
“Ask her.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn's face had gone pale.
Marcus whispered, “What did you do?””
Evelyn's lips trembled.
“I didn't know.””
Samuel laughed.
“You always knew more than you admitted.””
Marcus stepped toward his wife.
“Evelyn.””
She looked at him.
“I found the phone years ago.””
Marcus stared.
“When?””
“After your father died.””
“You had it?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because the message was incomplete.””
Samuel interrupted.
“Because she was afraid of what came after.””
Marcus turned.
“What came after?””
Samuel pulled a folded piece of paper from his coat.
He opened it.
It was a page from his father's journal.
Marcus recognized the handwriting immediately.
Samuel read aloud:
“*The person Marcus trusts most is not Vanessa. It is the person who has access to every legal document in his life.*”
Daniel's face changed.
Marcus slowly turned toward him.
Daniel whispered, “Marcus…”
Samuel smiled.
“Now ask yourself why your attorney knew about Evelyn before you did.””
Marcus stared at Daniel.
Daniel looked devastated.
“I didn't betray you.””
“Then explain.””
“I was following your father's instructions.””
“Then why did you hide the trust?””
“Because your father ordered me to.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Ava.
“Because the trust wasn't meant to mature when she turned eighteen.””
Ava stepped forward.
“Then when?””
Daniel hesitated.
“When Marcus dies.””
Silence.
Marcus stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“The trust activates only when both conditions are met.””
“What conditions?””
“Evelyn must be legally declared dead.””
Marcus felt cold.
“And?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You must also die.””
Ava started crying.
“So Vanessa was trying to…”
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“She wasn't trying to steal the trust directly.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You were trying to kill me.””
Vanessa shook her head desperately.
“No.””
Samuel laughed.
“You still don't understand.””
He pulled another document from his coat.
“Your father created the trust to keep the money away from me.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why would killing me help you?””
Samuel's smile vanished.
“Because your father made one mistake.””
He looked at Ava.
“He named her as the final beneficiary.””
Marcus moved in front of his daughter.
Samuel continued.
“If you die, the trust passes to Ava.””
Ava's tears stopped.
Samuel smiled.
“And if Ava dies…”
He paused.
The garage seemed to shrink around them.
Marcus whispered, “Who gets it?””
Samuel looked directly at him.
“Me.””
Vanessa suddenly lunged forward.
She slapped Samuel across the face.
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her!””
Samuel grabbed her wrist.
“You should have known better.””
Marcus moved toward them.
But Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
“Why?””
“Because Samuel isn't the one who has been following us.””
Marcus turned.
Outside the garage, another vehicle had arrived.
A black sedan.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
The former financial director from the photograph.
The man who had supposedly disappeared eight years ago.
He looked toward Samuel.
Then toward Marcus.
And said:
“Samuel, your father wants to speak with you.””
Samuel's face changed.
“That's impossible.””
May you like
The man smiled.
“Your father isn't dead.””
