Chapter 3: The Café Across Town
Marcus drove for nearly four hours without stopping.
Daniel sat beside him, holding the photograph.
Neither man spoke much.
Every few minutes, Marcus looked at the image again.
The woman in the café.
The familiar necklace.
The man's hand.
His watch.
His ring.
It looked exactly like him.
But Marcus had never been to that city.
When they finally arrived, rain was falling hard enough to blur the windshield.
The café was tucked between a bookstore and an old tailor shop.
Its sign read:
*HARBOR LANE CAFÉ.*
Marcus parked across the street.
“Stay here,” Daniel said.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“This could be a trap.””
“Everything has been a trap.””
He opened the door.
Daniel grabbed his shoulder.
“Marcus, if Evelyn is alive, don't rush in.””
Marcus looked at him.
“For eight years, I was told my wife was dead.””
His voice cracked.
“If she's in there, I'm not waiting another second.””
He crossed the street.
The bell above the café door chimed.
Warm air rushed over him.
Coffee.
Cinnamon.
Rain-soaked coats.
Low conversation.
Marcus scanned the room.
Then he saw her.
A woman sitting in the far corner.
Short dark hair.
Gray sweater.
Hands wrapped around a coffee cup.
She looked older.
But Marcus knew her immediately.
His entire body stopped.
“Evelyn…”
She lifted her head.
Their eyes met.
For a second, the café disappeared.
No rain.
No Vanessa.
No forged documents.
No funeral.
Just the woman he had loved.
Evelyn slowly stood.
The chair scraped against the floor.
“Marcus?””
His legs almost gave out.
He took one step.
Then another.
“It's really you.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You shouldn't be here.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You're alive.””
She nodded.
“I never died.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the man sitting across from her.
Marcus finally saw him clearly.
It wasn't him.
It was a stranger.
Same black watch.
Same silver wedding ring.
Same jacket.
Same posture.
But not Marcus.
The man looked up.
His face was unfamiliar.
Evelyn whispered, “That's Daniel's brother.””
Marcus froze.
“My attorney doesn't have a brother.””
The man smiled.
“Not the brother you know.””
Daniel suddenly entered the café behind Marcus.
The stranger's smile vanished.
Daniel stopped dead.
Marcus turned.
“You know him?””
Daniel looked at the man.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Marcus.
“Yes.””
Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Who is he?””
Daniel swallowed.
“His name is Adrian.””
“Why is he wearing my ring?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“No.””
He pointed at Adrian.
“Why does he have my ring?””
Adrian slowly removed it.
He placed it on the table.
“This belonged to your wife.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
She shook her head.
“I gave it to him.””
“Why?””
“Because I needed someone to pretend to be you.””
Marcus felt dizzy.
“For what?””
Evelyn looked around the café.
“Because Vanessa was watching me.””
Marcus pulled out a chair.
“Start talking.””
Evelyn sat.
Daniel remained standing.
Marcus lowered himself across from her.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
“You had eight years.””
“I know.””
“I buried you.””
“I know.””
“I stood beside your coffin.””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“That wasn't me.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
“The body wasn't mine.””
He couldn't speak.
Evelyn continued.
“Vanessa arranged everything.””
“Why?””
“Because she needed everyone to believe I was dead.””
Marcus's hands curled into fists.
“What did you know?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
Daniel nodded reluctantly.
Evelyn took a breath.
“Years ago, I discovered Vanessa had been stealing from your company.””
Marcus shook his head.
“How much?””
“Millions.””
He stared at her.
“She used shell companies. Fake employees. Offshore accounts.””
Marcus remembered the transactions.
The forged signature.
The private investigator.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried.””
“Then why didn't I hear you?””
“Because Vanessa intercepted the message.””
Marcus stared at her.
Evelyn leaned closer.
“She knew I was going to expose her.””
“What happened?””
“She followed me one night.””
Rain tapped against the café windows.
Evelyn's voice dropped.
“She tried to kill me.””
Marcus's face went white.
“I escaped.””
“Then why stay hidden?””
“Because she threatened Ava.””
Marcus went still.
Evelyn reached across the table.
“I watched her grow up from a distance.””
Marcus's eyes burned.
“You saw Ava?””
“Every birthday.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I watched you too.””
Marcus looked away.
“Why didn't you come home?””
“Because Vanessa had people watching the house.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“She wasn't exaggerating.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected my wife was alive?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I knew.””
Marcus stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
“You knew?””
“I couldn't prove it.””
“You let me mourn her!””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Marcus slammed his palm onto the table.
“Then why bring me here now?””
Evelyn looked frightened.
“Because Vanessa knows.””
Marcus's anger faded.
“What?””
“She knows I'm alive.””
“How?””
Evelyn looked toward the café window.
A black SUV had stopped across the street.
Two men stepped out.
Daniel immediately reached for Marcus's arm.
“We need to leave.””
Marcus stared at Evelyn.
“Is that her?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
The café door opened.
A woman in a dark coat walked inside.
Marcus recognized her instantly.
Vanessa.
She slowly removed her gloves.
Then she looked directly at Evelyn.
And smiled.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Evelyn stood frozen.
Marcus whispered, “How did you find us?””
Vanessa's smile widened.
“I didn't.””
She placed a photograph on the table.
Marcus looked down.
It was a picture of Ava leaving their house that morning.
On the back was a handwritten message.
*You were never the one Vanessa was afraid of.*
Marcus looked up.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“She was.””
Evelyn's face went pale.
Vanessa pointed at Daniel.
“Ask your attorney what happened to Rose.””
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
Daniel's expression collapsed.
Vanessa smiled.
“Because Rose didn't just disappear.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“She told me everything.””
Then the café lights suddenly went out.
May you like
And in the darkness, Evelyn whispered one terrifying sentence:
“Rose is here.””
