Chapter 1: The Forged Signature

Ava came running out of the house barefoot, crying so hard she could barely breathe.

“Dad! Please, you have to believe me!””

Marcus had just stepped out of his SUV when she crashed into him, gripping his jacket with both hands.

“What happened, Ava?”” he asked.

Before she could answer, Vanessa emerged from the front door.

She wasn't rushing.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't even angry.

She simply walked toward them with a thin folder in her hand.

“She’s lying,” Vanessa said coldly.

“She caused trouble again. I’ve already taken care of everything.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What is that?””

Vanessa held out the folder.

“Just sign it, Marcus. It’s for the best.””

Ava's face went white.

“No!””

She grabbed her father's arm.

“Dad, DON’T!””

Marcus looked from his daughter to Vanessa.

“Why?””

Ava pointed at Vanessa, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“She made me sign something… and told me you would never come back.””

Vanessa's expression finally cracked.

“That’s not what happened!””

Marcus slowly took the document.

He glanced at the first page.

Then the second.

His jaw tightened.

“What the hell is this?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, let me explain—”

He flipped to the final page.

His eyes widened.

“You forged my signature?””

Vanessa froze.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Ava whispered, “Dad… that's not even the worst part.””

Marcus lowered the document.

“What else?””

Ava swallowed.

“She told me Mom was never coming back.””

The words struck him harder than anything else.

Vanessa immediately stepped between them.

“Marcus, she’s confused. She’s been emotional all week.””

Ava screamed.

“I’m not confused!””

Her voice echoed across the driveway.

“She showed me Mom’s death certificate!””

Marcus went completely still.

Vanessa's lips parted.

“Ava…”

“You told me Mom died!”” Ava sobbed.

“You said everyone had to accept it. You said Dad couldn't handle the truth!””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What did you show her?””

Vanessa's confidence disappeared.

“Nothing.””

“You just said she was confused.””

“She misunderstood something.””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Show me.””

Vanessa didn't move.

“Marcus, this is ridiculous.””

“Show me the death certificate.””

“I don't have it.””

“Then tell me where it is.””

Vanessa looked away.

Ava wiped her face with her sleeve.

“It was in the study.””

Marcus turned toward the house.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Don't.””

That single word stopped him.

Marcus looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

Vanessa released him.

“I just… don't think you should do this while you're upset.””

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

“My daughter says you showed her proof that her mother died.””

He held up the forged document.

“And now I find out you forged my signature.””

His voice dropped.

“So give me one good reason I shouldn't search every room in this house.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Marcus walked inside.

Ava followed.

The house felt different to him now.

Same marble floors.

Same chandelier.

Same framed family photographs.

But suddenly every object looked staged.

Marcus entered the study and went straight to the desk.

He opened the drawers.

Nothing.

He checked the cabinet.

Nothing.

Then Ava pointed toward a locked wooden drawer.

“There.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You have the key?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“I'll have it opened.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, please.””

He stopped.

“Please what?””

Her eyes filled with tears for the first time.

“You don't understand what I was trying to protect you from.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then explain.””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“Your wife is dead.””

Ava sobbed.

“You're lying!””

Vanessa turned toward the girl.

“Your mother died years ago.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“We buried her.””

“Yes.””

“I saw the funeral.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you afraid of one locked drawer?””

Vanessa had no answer.

A sharp knock sounded at the study door.

Everyone turned.

It was Daniel, Marcus's longtime attorney.

He held a small envelope.

“Marcus,” Daniel said quietly, “I think you need to see this.””

Marcus took it.

Inside was a photocopy of an old bank transaction.

His eyes moved across the page.

The account holder's name made his blood run cold.

*Evelyn Carter.*

His wife.

And beside the account was a transaction dated three months after her supposed death.

Marcus looked up.

“Daniel…”

“I know.””

“Who made this transaction?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That's why I'm here.””

Marcus's fingers tightened around the paper.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“She did.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Ava whispered, “Dad…”

Marcus slowly turned to his wife.

“Where did you send my money?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at the clock.

Then at the locked drawer.

Then toward the hallway.

As if she was waiting for someone.

And suddenly Marcus heard the unmistakable sound of a car starting outside.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Marcus noticed.

“Who's leaving?””

She didn't respond.

He ran toward the front door.

By the time he reached the driveway, a black sedan was already speeding away.

Marcus stared after it.

Then Daniel came running behind him.

“Marcus!””

“What?””

Daniel held up his phone.

“There was another transaction.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

His stomach dropped.

The recipient wasn't a bank.

It was a private investigator.
