Chapter 8: The Fourth Child

The emergency lights flickered on, bathing the basement in a dull red glow.

Adrian dropped to the floor, pulling Eleanor behind him.

Clara wrapped herself around Lily.

Victoria stood at the doorway, staring toward the staircase.

“Who fired?”” she demanded.

No one answered.

Another gunshot echoed from above.

Then Daniel's voice rang out.

“Police! Drop your weapons!””

Victoria's face twisted with fury.

“You brought them here?””

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

“I didn't bring anyone. Daniel made that decision.””

A heavy crash sounded overhead, followed by the clatter of footsteps.

The two men who had been guarding Victoria disappeared through the doorway. She tried to follow, but Adrian stepped into her path.

“Where is Mia?””

Victoria stopped.

“Move.””

“Where is my niece?””

She stared at him, breathing hard.

Then she reached into her jacket and pulled out a small remote control.

“Do you want to see her?””

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“What have you done?””

Victoria pressed a button.

A monitor mounted above the cot flickered to life.

Mia lay inside a portable crib in another room. Beside her stood a man wearing a dark mask.

A red digital timer glowed on the wall.

00:04:59.

Clara screamed.

“What's that timer?””

Victoria's eyes remained fixed on Adrian.

“Your father built this warehouse to store things nobody was supposed to find. The lower rooms flood when the river gates open. The timer controls the emergency locks.””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Stop it.””

“Give me the gold key and the original trust agreement.””

“You already have the trust agreement!””

“I have a copy.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“The original contains the final beneficiary clause. Without it, the transfer cannot be completed.””

Eleanor gripped Adrian's sleeve.

“Don't give her the key.””

Victoria turned toward her.

“You've had twenty years to keep your mouth shut, Mother.””

The word seemed to strike Eleanor physically.

Adrian stared at Victoria.

“You knew Eleanor was alive all along.””

Victoria's laugh was brittle.

“She was alive because I allowed it.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“You kept me locked away because you wanted the trust.””

“I kept you locked away because you refused to sign it over!””

“You stole my children.””

“I was a child myself!””

Victoria's voice cracked.

For the first time, Adrian saw something beneath her cruelty that looked almost like pain.

“You got to be loved. You got a brother who remembered your birthday. You got a mother who sang to you. I got a new name, strangers who called me lucky, and a father who told me I was worth more alive than dead.””

Eleanor reached toward her.

“Victoria, I never stopped looking for you.””

“Don't.””

“I was told you died.””

“Don't you dare pretend you were the only one who suffered!””

Victoria's hand shook around the remote.

Clara moved closer to Eleanor.

“Then why are you doing this to the children?””

Victoria looked at Lily.

The little girl was staring at her with wide, frightened eyes.

For one brief second, Victoria's expression softened.

Then she pressed another button.

The timer began counting down faster.

00:03:41.

“Because nobody ever gave me a choice,” she whispered.

Adrian took a slow breath.

“You still have one.””

Victoria laughed.

“You think I can simply walk away? Your father spent my entire life telling me that if I didn't secure the trust, I'd end up with nothing. He made me believe that if I couldn't control the Blackwoods, they would destroy me.””

“He manipulated you.””

“And you benefited from it!””

Adrian didn't argue.

She was right about one thing. He had inherited the estate, the company, the wealth, and the family name without ever questioning the price.

But he would not allow another child to pay for it.

He held up the gold key.

“Let Mia go. I'll give you this.””

Victoria stared at the key.

“Put it on the floor.””

He did.

“Kick it toward me.””

He obeyed.

She retrieved it, then tossed the remote control to one of the guards who had reappeared in the doorway.

“Reset the timer.””

The man hurried away.

Adrian watched him disappear.

“Now release Mia.””

Victoria opened the door wider.

“Not yet.””

Eleanor stepped between them.

“Victoria, the fourth beneficiary isn't what you think.””

Victoria went rigid.

“Be quiet.””

“Your father lied to you.””

“I said be quiet!””

Eleanor's voice trembled, but she continued.

“The fourth child was never a secret beneficiary. She was your daughter.””

Victoria's face drained of color.

Clara stared at her.

“What?””

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

“The medical report listed four births because Victoria was pregnant when she was sixteen. Your father arranged for the baby to be taken away. He told Victoria the child had died.””

Victoria backed away.

“No.””

“He told me the same thing.””

“No!””

Eleanor reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.

It showed a teenage girl in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby. The girl had Victoria's eyes.

On the back was a date.

Twenty years earlier.

And a name.

*Isabelle Hale.*

Victoria stared at the photograph as though the paper had begun to burn.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the original archive.””

“That's impossible.””

“I found it before your father moved me here.””

Victoria's lips trembled.

“My daughter died.””

“No,” Eleanor whispered.

“She was adopted.””

Victoria sank against the wall.

Adrian watched her carefully.

The woman who had threatened his family, destroyed his wedding, and helped conceal the truth was suddenly unable to speak.

Then Clara noticed something.

“Victoria,” she said softly, “how old is Isabelle now?””

Victoria looked up.

“Twenty.””

Clara's face changed.

She looked at Adrian.

Then at the photograph.

Then at the silver necklace around her own neck.

“My daughter was born twenty years ago,” Clara whispered.

The room went silent.

Adrian turned toward her.

“What are you saying?””

Clara's hands began to shake.

“When my mother died, I found a hospital bracelet among her belongings. She told me she'd once helped a young woman escape a private clinic. She said the woman had given birth to a baby girl and begged her to protect the child.””

Victoria slowly stood.

“What was the girl's name?””

Clara swallowed.

“Isabelle.””

Victoria stared at her.

Then she took a step forward.

“You're telling me you have my daughter?””

Clara shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“No. I'm telling you that I have spent years searching for a little girl whose mother was told she died.””

Victoria covered her mouth.

For a moment, Adrian thought she might collapse.

Then her expression changed again.

“Where is she?””

Clara looked toward the ceiling.

“I don't know. But Helen did.””

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“Helen Bennett?””

Clara nodded.

“She told me she'd found a record showing Isabelle had been adopted by a family in Connecticut. She was going to tell me everything after the wedding.””

Victoria grabbed Clara's shoulders.

“Where are they?””

Clara recoiled.

“Don't touch me!””

“Where is my daughter?””

“I don't know!””

Victoria released her so abruptly that Clara stumbled.

The remote control slipped from the guard's hand and hit the floor.

Adrian lunged for it.

Victoria screamed, “Stop him!””

But the guard was already moving.

Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs, holding a police officer's arm as he dragged him down into the basement.

“Adrian! The lower room is flooding!””

A roar rose from behind the walls.

Water began rushing through a narrow drainage channel beneath their feet.

On the monitor, Mia's crib rocked as water spread across the floor.

The timer flashed.

00:01:12.

Clara screamed.

“MY BABY!””

Adrian looked at Victoria.

“Give me the remote.””

She held it against her chest.

“No.””

“Victoria, please!””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“If I save her, you'll take everything from me.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“No. I'll make sure you answer for what you've done. But I'm not going to let an innocent child die.””

Victoria looked at the monitor.

Then she looked at Eleanor.

For one moment, she seemed to be a frightened sixteen-year-old girl again, standing in a hospital corridor while someone told her that her baby was dead.

Her fingers loosened.

The remote fell into Adrian's hand.

He pressed the emergency release.

The screen went black.

Then a green light appeared beside the door.

Adrian raced upstairs with Daniel.

Clara remained beside Eleanor, holding Lily against her chest.

Victoria stood motionless in the red glow.

“Where is she?”” she whispered.

Clara looked at her.

“Your daughter?””

Victoria nodded.

Clara's voice softened.

“I'll help you find her.””

Victoria stared at her sister.

Then, from somewhere above them, a little girl's voice called out.

“Mom?””

Victoria turned toward the stairs.

A police officer appeared in the doorway, carrying a small girl with dark hair and a blue coat.

The child looked at Victoria.

Then at Clara.

And finally at Eleanor.

“Which one of you is my mother?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Because the little girl had a silver necklace around her neck.

And the same black rose birthmark as Victoria.
