Chapter 5: His Father's Last Lie

"Put the gun down!""

Daniel's voice echoed through the chapel.

Adrian held Alexander tightly behind the pew, shielding the boy with his body. Clara had dropped to the floor beside them, one hand covering her mouth, the other gripping the silver necklace.

His father sat motionless in the wheelchair.

The pistol rested in his right hand.

"I see Daniel has finally decided to grow a spine," he said.

Daniel raised both hands.

"You told me you were dying.""

"I was.""

"You told me the boy was safe.""

"He is.""

"You pointed a gun at him!""

The older man glanced toward Alexander.

"I pointed it at Adrian.""

The boy began to cry.

Adrian pulled him closer.

"You're not going to hurt anyone.""

His father gave a humorless smile.

"You still think you're in control.""

"No. I think you're an old man with a gun, surrounded by people who have finally stopped believing you.""

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then the older man lowered the pistol.

Not completely.

Just enough for Adrian to breathe again.

"Come out from behind the pew," he ordered.

"All of you.""

Adrian stayed where he was.

"Tell us where Victoria is.""

His father's eyes narrowed.

"She has the documents.""

"What documents?""

"The original trust agreement. Eleanor's medical records. The birth certificates. Everything that proves what happened.""

Clara rose slowly.

"Then why didn't she destroy them?""

"Because Victoria has always believed she could use the truth as leverage.""

"Leverage against whom?""

His father looked at Adrian.

"Against you.""

Adrian felt Alexander trembling against his side.

He loosened his grip just enough for the boy to see his face.

"You're safe," he whispered.

Alexander shook his head.

"Grandpa says people disappear when they ask too many questions.""

Adrian looked at his father.

"How long have you been keeping him here?""

"He's been protected.""

"Answer me.""

"Since he was born.""

Clara stepped closer.

"Where was he born?""

The older man hesitated.

Then he said, "St. Agnes Private Clinic.""

Daniel went pale.

"That clinic closed twenty years ago.""

"Because I paid for it to close.""

The admission hung in the air.

Adrian stared at him.

"Why?""

His father shifted in the wheelchair, grimacing as he moved his legs.

"Eleanor discovered that our family trust had been mismanaged. She threatened to expose me. She wanted to take the children and leave.""

"You could have let her go.""

"And let her destroy everything I'd built?""

"She was your wife!""

"She was a Blackwood," his father snapped.

"She had responsibilities.""

Clara's voice trembled.

"She had children.""

His father turned toward her.

"And she made the mistake of believing love was more important than survival.""

Clara slapped him.

The sound cracked through the chapel.

For one stunned moment, nobody spoke.

Then Clara stepped back, shaking.

"My mother spent twenty years afraid of you. She died believing she'd failed her children. You don't get to talk about her as if she was the one who did something wrong.""

His father touched his cheek.

"You have her temper.""

"And you have her blood on your hands.""

Daniel lowered his gaze.

Adrian watched his father carefully.

Something about the old man's explanation didn't fit.

If Eleanor had discovered financial misconduct, why had his father gone to such lengths to erase her? Why had he changed hospital records, altered birth certificates, and apparently faked his own death?

And why was Victoria still involved?

"Tell me about the fire," Adrian said.

His father stiffened.

"What fire?""

"The fire that supposedly killed your secretary. The chapel was closed after it. Daniel said it happened fifteen years ago.""

For the first time, the older man looked afraid.

"Who told you that?""

"Daniel.""

His father glanced at his former employee.

"You shouldn't have brought him here.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Why? Because I might remember something?""

The older man gripped the pistol.

"Daniel, you have no idea who you are.""

"I know I'm your son.""

The words struck the room like thunder.

Alexander stopped crying.

Clara stared at Daniel.

Adrian felt his heart seize.

His father closed his eyes.

Then he whispered, "Yes.""

Daniel's face twisted.

"Say it properly.""

His father opened his eyes.

"You are my son. Edward Blackwood. Eleanor's second child.""

Daniel stumbled backward.

For twelve years, he had believed himself abandoned. His adoptive parents had loved him, but he had always wondered why his earliest records were missing and why his father had refused to help him search for his birth family.

Now he had an answer.

"You gave me away," Daniel whispered.

"I saved you.""

"You gave me to strangers!""

"Because Eleanor was going to take you from me.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You let me believe my mother didn't want me.""

His father looked away.

"I did what I had to do.""

Daniel lunged toward him.

Adrian caught his arm.

"Don't.""

Daniel struggled against him.

"Let me go!""

"Not while he's holding a gun.""

The older man slowly set the pistol on the armrest of his wheelchair.

"I never wanted any of this to happen.""

Adrian stared at him.

"You made it happen.""

"No. Eleanor did when she chose to run.""

"She ran because you were threatening her.""

His father's mouth tightened.

Then, unexpectedly, he laughed.

A dry, exhausted sound.

"You think Victoria is the villain in this story?""

Adrian felt his stomach turn.

"What did you do to her?""

His father looked toward Clara.

"Ask her why she never told you that she has a third child.""

Clara went rigid.

"What?""

His father smiled.

"Eleanor had three children, not two. Adrian, Clara, and a little girl who died at birth.""

Clara shook her head.

"No.""

"Your mother never told you?""

"No!""

"She was afraid you would discover what really happened at St. Agnes.""

Clara covered her ears.

"Stop.""

His father leaned forward.

"The third child didn't die. She was taken from the clinic and given to a family that owed me a favor.""

Adrian felt the room tilt.

"Who?""

His father looked directly at him.

"Victoria.""

Silence swallowed the chapel.

Clara slowly lowered her hands.

Victoria was Eleanor's daughter.

Adrian's bride had been his sister.

And she had known.

The necklace, the black rose tattoo, the frantic attempts to stop Clara from speaking—all of it suddenly made a terrible kind of sense.

Daniel stared at the old man.

"You're lying.""

His father shook his head.

"Victoria was born Victoria Blackwood. Her adoptive parents changed her name and raised her away from the estate. When she was old enough, I brought her back.""

Adrian staggered away from the pew.

He remembered Victoria's first visit to the estate. The way she had seemed strangely familiar with the house. Her questions about his childhood. The way she had touched his face the first time he told her he had lost his mother.

He remembered telling her that he sometimes dreamed about a little girl standing at the top of the staircase.

Victoria had cried when he described the dream.

He had assumed she was moved by his sadness.

Now he understood that she had been remembering the same childhood he had lost.

"You knew who I was when you met me," Adrian whispered.

His father nodded.

"Of course.""

Adrian turned away, fighting the urge to vomit.

"You let me fall in love with my own sister.""

"I let you marry someone who could protect the family.""

"Protect it from what?""

"From the truth.""

Clara began to cry silently.

Alexander slipped from Adrian's arms and walked toward Daniel.

"Are you my brother?""

Daniel knelt in front of him.

"Yes.""

"Are you going to leave me here?""

Daniel's face broke.

"Never.""

He pulled the boy into his arms.

Adrian watched them, then turned toward his father.

"Where is Victoria?""

His father looked toward the chapel's rear door.

"She'll be here soon.""

"Why?""

"Because she knows the truth is out.""

A phone began vibrating on the altar.

Clara recognized the black casing immediately.

Victoria's phone.

Adrian picked it up.

A new message appeared on the screen.

*The children are secured. Bring the original birth records to the river warehouse, or the woman who raised Clara will not be the last person to die.*

Beneath the message was a photograph of the protected apartment.

Lily sat on a sofa, holding Mia.

A masked man stood behind them.

Clara screamed.

Adrian felt something inside him turn cold.

His father began to laugh again.

"You see?"" he said.

"You still don't understand who your bride really is.""

Adrian pointed the phone at him.

"Tell me where the warehouse is.""

His father smiled.

"She has the children. She has the documents. And she has one final secret.""

"What secret?""

The old man's expression changed.

"Victoria doesn't want the Blackwood fortune anymore.""

May you like

He leaned closer.

"She wants you dead.""
