Chapter 4: The Child They Buried Twice
“Let go of my daughter!””
I threw myself toward the staircase.
Richard caught my jacket, but I twisted out of it and slammed my shoulder into his chest. His briefcase hit the floor. Papers scattered across the concrete.
The woman holding Lily didn't even flinch.
She simply continued walking.
“Stop!”” I shouted.
She turned halfway around.
“Daniel, if you hurt me, you'll never find out what happened to your real daughter.””
My feet stopped.
Behind the steel door, Elena screamed.
“Don't listen to her! She's lying!””
The woman smiled.
“Still trying to control everyone, Elena?””
“YOU STOLE MY CHILD!””
The words echoed through the corridor.
I looked at the woman.
“What did she mean?””
For the first time, her expression changed.
She glanced at Lily, then at me.
“Your wife gave birth to twins.””
The air left my lungs.
“Twins?””
Richard slowly got to his feet.
“That's enough.””
The woman ignored him.
“Fourteen months ago, Elena discovered that one of her daughters had been switched at birth. She began asking questions. She found medical records, hospital payment records, and a nurse who was willing to testify.””
I shook my head.
“Lily was born at St. Mary's Hospital. I was there. I held her.””
“Yes,” she replied.
“You held a baby. You just didn't know which baby.””
I looked at Lily.
She was crying silently now.
“That's not true,” I whispered.
The woman reached into her coat again and produced a folded hospital document.
“Look at the date.””
I recognized the hospital logo.
It was Lily's birth certificate registration record.
Beneath the date and time was a handwritten note:
*Twin A transferred to private neonatal unit.*
I stared at the paper.
“What private unit?””
Richard moved toward me.
“Daniel, give me that document.””
I stepped backward.
“Don't come near me.””
The woman continued.
“Elena's first daughter was born at 2:14 a.m. Your Lily was born at 2:31 a.m. But the hospital records were altered. The first baby disappeared from the official system.””
“Where is she?””
The woman looked directly into my eyes.
“That's what we're about to find out.””
I turned toward Richard.
“You knew?””
He straightened his tie.
“I knew there were irregularities.””
“IRREGULARITIES?””
“Your wife was unstable after childbirth. She became obsessed with the idea that someone had taken her baby.””
Elena slammed her fist against the steel door.
“I WASN'T UNSTABLE! I SAW HER!””
Richard raised the remote.
I lunged toward him.
“Touch that button and I'll break your hand.””
He hesitated.
The woman at the staircase laughed softly.
“Daniel, you're beginning to understand why I wanted you involved.””
I looked at her.
“Who are you really?””
She lowered her voice.
“My name is Vanessa Hale.””
I stared at her.
“Richard's daughter?””
She nodded.
Richard's face turned white.
“Don't.””
She looked at him.
“You've spent fourteen months telling everyone I'm your niece. You've spent fourteen months pretending you don't know what happened to your granddaughter.””
My stomach twisted.
The woman who had introduced herself as Vanessa, Elena's twin, was actually Richard's daughter.
But the woman standing beside Lily looked like Elena.
And the woman behind the door looked like Elena too.
Three women.
One family.
One horrifying secret.
I turned toward the trapped woman.
“Elena, tell me the truth. Is this our daughter?””
Elena pressed her forehead against the glass.
“Daniel, our first daughter was taken from the hospital. I found out six months ago. I tried to contact you, but Richard intercepted every letter.””
Richard scoffed.
“She has no proof.””
Elena's voice broke.
“I found the nurse.””
“Which nurse?”” I demanded.
“Margaret. She worked the night shift. She told me the babies were switched because one of them had a rare blood condition. The hospital was paid to falsify the records.””
Vanessa looked irritated.
“Enough about Margaret.””
Elena stared at her.
“You killed her.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Watch what you say.””
“You pushed her down those stairs.””
Richard stepped between them.
“Both of you, stop.””
I felt sick.
“Where is Margaret now?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily tugged at the sleeve of the woman holding her.
“Mommy?””
The woman crouched.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Are you going to take me away?””
Her smile softened.
“Only until we find your sister.””
Lily shook her head.
“I don't want to go.””
The woman stroked her hair.
“You don't understand. You've been living in the wrong family.””
I moved toward them.
“She's seven years old. Whatever happened before she was born isn't her fault.””
The woman's expression became strangely cold.
“That's exactly what Elena said.””
She stood and pulled Lily toward the staircase.
I grabbed my daughter's free hand.
“Lily, look at me. Daddy is here.””
She squeezed my fingers.
Then she whispered something.
“Daddy, she has the necklace.””
I looked at the woman's neck.
A silver chain disappeared beneath her collar.
“What necklace?””
Lily pointed.
“The one Mommy said belonged to my sister.””
Vanessa reached for it.
I caught a glimpse of a small silver pendant.
A tiny engraved letter.
E.
Elena.
The woman noticed me looking.
She pulled the pendant beneath her shirt.
“Richard,” she said quietly.
“We need to leave.””
Richard picked up his briefcase.
“Not without the child.””
I stepped in front of Lily.
“She's not going anywhere.””
For a moment, the corridor went silent.
Then Richard opened his briefcase and removed a thick envelope.
He tossed it at my feet.
“Look inside.””
I didn't move.
“What's in it?””
“Your daughter's adoption records.””
My stomach tightened.
“Lily wasn't adopted.””
Richard's eyes remained fixed on mine.
“Not according to the original paperwork.””
I picked up the envelope.
Inside were photographs, medical reports, and a signed legal declaration.
The declaration carried my signature.
But I had never seen it before.
It stated that I had voluntarily surrendered parental rights to a newborn girl fourteen months after her birth.
My name was printed beneath the signature.
Daniel Mercer.
I stared at the date.
It was the exact date Elena had supposedly died.
I looked up.
Richard's voice was almost gentle.
“You didn't just lose your wife that night, Daniel.””
He paused.
“You legally gave away your daughter.””
May you like
And then Elena whispered the words that destroyed what little hope I had left.
“Daniel, that signature is real.””
