Chapter 10: The Last Secret Beneath Our Pool

“Which granddaughter survives?””

My mother's words hung in the air.

I looked at Lily and Sophie.

Two little girls stood beside Elena, holding hands, neither understanding why the adults around them were behaving like monsters.

Then I looked at the woman I had buried nine years earlier.

“Mom?””

She smiled.

“Daniel, sweetheart. Put the girls down. We need to talk.””

I tightened my arms around Lily.

“You're dead.””

“Apparently, so is Elena. We've all had our little inconveniences.””

Michael laughed.

Richard emerged from the corridor behind her, holding his injured arm.

Vanessa stood between them, her wrists still tied.

I understood then.

The family I had believed was broken by tragedy had been controlled by people who had manufactured that tragedy.

My mother's expression softened.

“Your father made a terrible mistake when he decided to leave everything to you.””

“What everything?””

“The Mercer inheritance. The company. The research. The medical network.””

I shook my head.

“You killed Dad?””

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she lowered herself into a chair.

“Your father discovered what Richard and I were doing. He wanted to destroy the research and expose everyone involved. Michael and I couldn't allow that.””

Michael looked away.

I stared at him.

“You killed our father?””

“He was dying anyway,” Michael muttered.

My mother tapped her cane against the floor.

“Your brother helped us. Richard handled the legal arrangements. Vanessa handled Elena. And I handled the children.””

Elena stepped forward.

“You took Emma from me.””

My mother looked at her.

“I saved Emma.””

“You told me she died!””

“She was born with a condition that made her valuable to our research. We couldn't waste that opportunity.””

Elena's voice cracked.

“She was my baby.””

My mother shrugged.

“And now she has children of her own.””

Emma, who had been lying unconscious near the wall, suddenly moved.

She opened her eyes.

“Mother?””

My mother's expression changed.

“Emma. You're awake.””

Emma struggled to sit up.

“You promised you'd tell me who my father was.””

My mother looked toward Richard.

Richard lowered his eyes.

Emma stared at him.

“No.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Emma began shaking.

Richard was her biological father.

The man who had imprisoned her, manipulated her medical records, and used her daughters for research.

Emma looked at Elena.

Then at Richard.

Then at Sophie.

“Get my children away from them.””

I stepped forward.

“That's exactly what we're doing.””

Michael raised his gun.

“Not another step.””

I stopped.

My mother opened a small metal case attached to her cane.

Inside was a remote control.

She pressed one button.

A low mechanical vibration began beneath the floor.

The computer screens changed.

A diagram of the underground facility appeared.

Two rooms were highlighted in red.

I read the labels.

*SUBJECT A: LILY MERCER.*

*SUBJECT B: SOPHIE MERCER.*

My mother spoke calmly.

“The girls carry complementary genetic markers. Together, they provide the information we've spent decades trying to obtain.””

Elena moved in front of them.

“You're not touching my children.””

My mother sighed.

“That's what your mother said when she first discovered the program.””

Elena froze.

“What?””

My mother looked directly at her.

“Your grandmother started it. Your mother continued it. I expanded it. Three generations of women have protected this family.””

I felt sick.

“So the entire family was involved?””

“Not everyone. Your father wanted nothing to do with it. That's why he had to be removed.””

I glanced at the computer.

A small countdown had appeared.

*AUTOMATED TRANSFER: 04:59.*

I didn't know what it meant.

But I knew we had less than five minutes.

My mother followed my eyes.

“Don't worry. The girls won't feel anything.””

I looked at her.

“You're insane.””

She smiled.

“I'm a mother.””

“No. You're a monster.””

For the first time, her expression hardened.

“Michael, take the children.””

He stepped forward.

Vanessa suddenly threw herself against him.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Everyone screamed.

I grabbed Lily and pushed her behind the desk.

Elena pulled Sophie toward the service corridor.

Emma struggled to her feet.

Richard rushed toward the control panel.

I tackled him.

We crashed against the computer desk.

The metal case fell from my mother's cane.

The remote slid across the floor.

Michael shoved Vanessa away and reached for his gun.

But Vanessa kicked his injured leg.

He collapsed.

“RUN!”” she screamed.

I grabbed the remote.

My mother lunged for me.

“Give that back!””

I pressed the only button I could reach.

The screens went black.

The mechanical vibration stopped.

A loud alarm sounded.

Then the computer displayed a message.

*TRANSFER INTERRUPTED. SYSTEM LOCKDOWN.*

My mother stared at the screen.

“What have you done?””

I looked at her.

“Ended it.””

She raised her cane and struck my shoulder.

Pain exploded through my arm.

I stumbled backward.

Michael got up and grabbed Lily.

My daughter screamed.

“DADDY!””

I turned.

Michael was dragging her toward the corridor.

I ran after him.

He pushed open a steel door and disappeared inside.

I followed.

The room beyond was a small medical chamber containing two empty hospital beds and a wall of equipment.

Michael shoved Lily onto one bed.

“Stay there!””

I charged.

He turned and struck me across the face.

I fell against the equipment.

Blood filled my mouth.

Michael raised the gun.

“I'm sorry, Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Then don't do this.””

His hand trembled.

“You always got everything.””

“I lost my wife. I lost fourteen months with my daughter. You stole my life.””

“You don't understand what Dad promised me.””

“Dad is dead, Michael.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“He promised we'd share everything.””

“And you chose this?””

He looked toward Lily.

For a moment, I thought he might lower the gun.

Then a loud crash sounded behind him.

Elena appeared in the doorway.

She was holding a fire extinguisher.

She swung it with everything she had.

The metal cylinder struck Michael's arm.

The gun fell.

I scrambled up and kicked it beneath the bed.

Elena grabbed Lily.

“Are you hurt?””

Lily shook her head.

I pulled my wife into my arms.

For the first time in fourteen months, I felt we might actually survive.

Then another crash came from the corridor.

My mother was trying to escape.

Richard was following her.

Vanessa was shouting for everyone to stop.

I took Lily's hand.

“We're leaving. Now.””

We reached the main corridor just as the first police officers entered through the underground staircase.

Mrs. Collins had apparently contacted emergency services again after hearing explosions and alarms coming from our property.

I had never been so grateful to hear another human voice.

“POLICE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!””

Richard dropped to his knees.

Michael tried to run but was tackled before reaching the exit.

My mother stood perfectly still.

She looked at me.

“Daniel, you wouldn't let them arrest your own mother.””

I stared at her.

“You stopped being my mother when you decided my daughter was something you could experiment on.””

She began crying.

But I felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not sympathy.

Just exhaustion.

The officers handcuffed her.

Then I saw Vanessa sitting against the wall, blood running down her forehead.

I knelt beside her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded weakly.

“I suppose I finally did one decent thing.””

I looked at her.

“Why did you help us?””

She looked toward Elena.

“Because she was right about one thing. I always mattered. I just spent my entire life trying to prove it by destroying hers.””

Elena approached.

For several seconds, the two identical women stared at each other.

Then Elena held out her hand.

Vanessa took it.

Neither said anything.

They didn't need to.

The investigation lasted eleven months.

Richard Hale was charged with kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, illegal medical experimentation, and multiple counts of evidence tampering.

Michael eventually confessed to arranging Elena's disappearance and helping falsify the death records.

My mother was charged with orchestrating the entire operation.

The medical facility beneath our pool was dismantled.

Investigators recovered thousands of documents, including records identifying other families whose children had been secretly transferred through Richard's network.

Margaret's death was finally investigated properly.

Her body had been hidden in an abandoned storage building.

The woman who had tried to expose the truth was finally given a proper funeral.

Emma survived.

Her treatment continued under independent medical supervision, and she gradually regained her strength.

Sophie moved into our home.

Lily refused to sleep in a separate bedroom for the first three months.

Neither did I.

Elena needed time to recover.

Some nights she woke screaming, convinced she was back inside the underground room.

I would hold her until morning.

Sometimes she cried because she had missed Lily's first day of school, her seventh birthday, and fourteen months of ordinary family life.

I never told her those things didn't matter.

They mattered.

But we were alive.

And we had time to make new memories.

One Sunday morning, nearly a year after the discovery, I stood beside the swimming pool.

The concrete entrance had been sealed.

The blue ceramic flower was gone.

In its place was a small patch of fresh grass.

Lily and Sophie were playing in the garden.

Emma sat on the patio with a blanket around her shoulders.

Elena came outside carrying two cups of coffee.

She stood beside me.

“Do you ever think about what would have happened if Lily hadn't told you?””

I looked at the garden.

“Every day.””

Elena rested her head against my shoulder.

“She saved us.””

I nodded.

Then Lily ran toward us.

“Daddy! Mommy! Come see!””

She held up a small piece of paper.

It was a drawing.

Two little girls stood between a man and a woman.

Above them, Lily had written:

*MY FAMILY. ALL TOGETHER.*

I smiled.

Then I noticed something written in tiny letters at the bottom.

It wasn't Lily's handwriting.

I crouched.

“What does this say, sweetheart?””

Lily shrugged.

“I found it in the mailbox.””

I turned the paper over.

There was a short handwritten message.

*You think you found all the children. You didn't. Ask Richard about Baby Number Three.*

My blood turned cold.

I looked at Elena.

She read the message.

Her coffee slipped from her hand.

“What does that mean?”” I whispered.

She stared toward the garden.

Then she slowly shook her head.

“I don't know.””

But I knew one thing.

Richard had been hiding something even from my mother.

I pulled out my phone and called the prison where he was being held.

After several attempts, a guard connected the call.

Richard answered.

“Daniel.””

“Who sent the letter?””

He was silent.

“Richard, I'm asking you one question. Who is Baby Number Three?””

I heard him take a slow breath.

Then he laughed.

Not nervously.

Not bitterly.

It was the laugh of a man who had been waiting for this exact question.

“Daniel, you really should stop digging.””

“WHO IS IT?””

His voice dropped.

“Ask your wife what happened nine years before Lily was born.””

I looked at Elena.

She had gone completely pale.

Richard continued.

“Because the third child wasn't switched at birth.””

A pause.

“She was never supposed to be born at all.””

The call disconnected.

I lowered my phone.

Elena stared at me.

Then she whispered something I had never heard before.

May you like

“Daniel, I think I remember her.””

And as our daughters laughed in the garden, I realized that even after exposing the secret prison beneath our pool, we might have uncovered only the first layer of a much older nightmare.
