Chapter 9: The Inheritance Nobody Expected

Patricia read the document three times.

Marcus Richard Carter.

Her son's full name appeared beneath Thomas Reed's signature.

She looked up at Victor Hale.

“Explain this.””

Victor removed his glasses.

“Thomas executed a supplementary estate instrument shortly before his death. It appears to transfer a portion of his economic interest to Marcus.””

Patricia stared at him.

“How much?””

“That's what we need to establish.””

“Is it enough to invalidate Camille's appointment?””

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“Then why did you tell me about it?””

“Because you asked whether the document was authentic. I said it appeared authentic. I didn't say it did what you wanted.””

Patricia threw the envelope onto the table.

“Thomas hated my family.””

“Thomas was angry with Richard. He was not necessarily angry with Marcus.””

Patricia paced across the hotel suite.

“This is impossible. Camille has the controlling rights.””

Victor nodded.

“Under the first will, yes.””

“And now?””

“Under the second instrument, Marcus may have inherited a separate beneficial interest.””

Patricia stopped.

“Then my son has a claim.””

“Potentially.””

She smiled.

For the first time in weeks, she saw a path out.

If Marcus could challenge Camille's authority, the governance reset might be delayed.

And if the company remained under dispute, the frozen assets might eventually become accessible again.

“What do you need?”” she asked.

Victor closed his briefcase.

“An independent examination of the original documents.””

“Do it.””

“There will be costs.””

“I'll pay.””

Victor looked at her.

“With what funds?””

Patricia's smile disappeared.

He stood.

“Mrs. Carter, I suggest you stop thinking about this as a way to recover control. If the document is genuine, Marcus may have a legitimate inheritance. But that doesn't erase the financial investigation.””

Patricia walked him to the door.

Before leaving, Victor turned.

“One more thing. Thomas left a handwritten note attached to the supplementary will.””

“What did it say?””

Victor hesitated.

“He wrote that the transfer was not intended to enrich Marcus.””

“Then what was it intended to do?””

Victor looked directly at her.

“To give him a chance to choose whether he wanted to stand with the people who built the company or the people who tried to steal it.””

Patricia slammed the door after him.

She stood in the middle of the room, breathing hard.

Then she picked up her phone.

She called Marcus.

Marcus was in Daniel's office when the call came.

He glanced at the screen.

“It's my mother.””

Camille continued reviewing the financial report.

“Answer it.””

He put the call on speaker.

“Mom?””

“Marcus, I need to see you.””

“Why?””

“There's something about Thomas Reed's will.””

Marcus looked at Camille.

“What about it?””

“I have a document proving that Thomas left you part of his ownership interest.””

He frowned.

“Why would he leave me anything?””

“Because he understood that you weren't responsible for your father's mistakes.””

Camille slowly lifted her eyes.

Patricia continued.

“Your wife has been keeping you away from something that belongs to you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Mom, don't.””

“I'm trying to protect your inheritance.””

“You've spent eleven years lying to me.””

“Your father made mistakes. I did what I had to do.””

“And now you want me to challenge Camille?””

“I want you to claim what's yours.””

Marcus looked at Camille.

She remained silent.

“Send the document to Daniel,” he said.

Patricia's voice sharpened.

“I want to discuss this privately.””

“No.””

“Marcus—”

“If it's legitimate, the lawyers can review it.””

He ended the call.

Camille put down her pen.

“Your mother is becoming desperate.””

Marcus nodded.

“She thinks I can stop the governance reset.””

“Can you?””

He looked at her.

“Do you believe I would?””

Camille didn't answer.

Marcus swallowed.

“Camille, I know what I did. I know I signed those transfers. I know I let my mother treat you like you didn't belong. But I'm not going to help her steal from you again.””

Camille studied him.

“Then you may have to testify against her.””

“I will.””

“And against your father?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“If the evidence requires it.””

Daniel entered the room carrying a new file.

“We have a problem.””

He placed the file on the desk.

“Victor Hale has submitted a request to authenticate a second will. Patricia intends to use it to challenge the trust's ownership structure.””

Camille looked at the document.

“Have you seen the original?””

“Not yet. Victor says he'll produce it tomorrow.””

Daniel opened another folder.

“But there's something we found in the meantime.””

He placed a photocopy of Thomas Reed's medical records on the table.

Camille frowned.

“Why are we looking at these?””

“Because the second will was supposedly signed six weeks before your father's death.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel pointed to the date.

“According to the hospital records, your father was unconscious during that entire period.””

Camille stared at the page.

“What?””

“He suffered a severe stroke. He was admitted to St. Mary's Medical Center and remained under continuous care.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Could he have signed it before the stroke?””

“The document is dated six weeks after his admission.””

Camille's expression hardened.

“Then it's a forgery.””

“Possibly. We need the original and an independent handwriting examination.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“And there may be another issue. The notary who supposedly witnessed the document died four years before it was executed.””

Marcus stood.

“Then why would anyone believe it?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because someone has been using that notary's seal to authenticate documents for years.””

Camille looked at the envelope Patricia had mentioned.

She suddenly understood.

The second will might not have been created simply to take her inheritance.

It might have been created to give Marcus a reason to challenge her authority.

And if the challenge succeeded, the investigation could be delayed long enough for the remaining money to disappear.

“Daniel,” she said, “find every document authenticated by that notary.””

He nodded.

“I've already started.””

The next morning, Patricia arrived at the Carter Holdings headquarters with Victor Hale.

She wore a tailored black suit and carried the second will in a leather portfolio.

Several employees watched her cross the lobby.

For years, Patricia had entered the building as if it belonged to her.

Today, the receptionist asked her to wait.

“Mrs. Carter, Mr. Brooks is expecting you at ten.””

Patricia looked at the clock.

“It's nine-fifty.””

“Yes, ma'am.””

“I don't wait in reception.””

The receptionist kept her voice polite.

“I'm afraid you'll need to.””

Patricia stared at her.

“Do you know who I am?””

The young woman nodded.

“Yes, Mrs. Carter.””

“Then call someone who understands.””

Before the receptionist could answer, Daniel appeared.

“Mrs. Carter. Mr.

Hale. Please follow me.””

They entered the conference room.

Camille was already there.

Marcus sat beside her.

Patricia's eyes narrowed.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Neither should you, if the document is fraudulent.””

Victor placed the leather portfolio on the table.

“We have an original supplementary will executed by Thomas Reed.””

Daniel examined it without touching the signature.

“Where was this document kept?””

Victor replied, “In my client's private estate records.””

“Who was your client?””

“Mrs. Carter.””

Camille looked at him.

“Patricia was never my father's client.””

Victor hesitated.

“I was referring to her as the person who provided the document.””

Daniel nodded.

“Thank you for clarifying.””

He opened a protective folder and compared the document with the medical records.

“Mr. Hale, are you aware that Thomas Reed was unconscious on the date this will was supposedly executed?””

Victor looked uncomfortable.

“I was not aware.””

“Are you aware that the notary named here died four years earlier?””

Patricia stood.

“This is a distraction!””

Camille remained seated.

“Then you won't mind waiting for the examination.””

Patricia turned toward Marcus.

“Tell them what your grandfather wanted. Tell them that you deserve your share.””

Marcus looked at the document.

Then at his mother.

“Did you know Grandpa never intended me to receive the money directly?””

Patricia said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“I read his letter. Thomas gave me a conditional interest because he wanted me to have a choice.””

Patricia's jaw tightened.

“What choice?””

“Whether to support the truth or protect the people who stole from his family.””

For the first time, Patricia looked genuinely frightened.

Marcus pushed the document away.

“I choose the truth.””

Victor closed his briefcase.

“Then I believe this meeting should be adjourned until the authenticity examination is complete.””

Daniel nodded.

“That would be appropriate.””

Patricia gathered her handbag.

“You're making a terrible mistake, Marcus.””

He didn't respond.

She turned toward Camille.

“You think you've won?””

Camille looked at her calmly.

“No. I think we're finally getting somewhere.””

Patricia walked out.

But she didn't take the forged will with her.

That afternoon, Rebecca Shaw called Daniel.

“Daniel, we finished comparing the signatures.””

He put the call on speaker.

“And?””

“The second will is fraudulent.””

Camille closed her eyes.

Rebecca continued.

“The signature was copied from an earlier estate document. The notary seal was reproduced. But that's not the biggest discovery.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What is?””

“We traced the source of the paper. It came from a printing company used by Carter Legacy Investments LLC.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“That's my mother's company.””

“Correct,” Rebecca replied.

“And the purchase was authorized by Leonard Price.””

Camille exchanged a glance with Daniel.

The second will had been manufactured by the same people who were trying to conceal the offshore transfers.

But Rebecca wasn't finished.

“We also found an original document in the same archive. It appears to be a handwritten letter from Thomas Reed.””

Camille's breath caught.

“What does it say?””

Rebecca paused.

“It's addressed to Arthur Carter. It specifically mentions Marcus.””

Daniel asked, “Can you read the relevant section?””

Rebecca opened the scanned document.

Then she read aloud:

Arthur,

I know what your son has done. I know what he intends to do with the company. But I have met the boy, and I see something in him that reminds me of the man you once were.

If he ever discovers the truth, I want him to have an opportunity to make things right.

Do not give him my money as a reward. Give him a responsibility.

If he chooses honesty over his family's pride, let him stand beside my daughter.

If he chooses greed, let him stand alone.

Camille looked at Marcus.

He was staring at the table.

For years, he had believed the Carter fortune was his birthright.

But Thomas Reed had seen something in him before Marcus had ever understood the truth.

And that something was now being tested.

Daniel ended the call.

“We have enough to proceed with the governance reset.””

Camille nodded.

“Then schedule the final hearing.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Camille, I want to make one thing clear.””

She waited.

“I don't want Thomas's money. I don't want the company shares. I don't want anything that belongs to your family.””

Camille's expression softened slightly.

“Then what do you want?””

He looked down at his hands.

“To become someone my grandfather and your father wouldn't be ashamed of.””

Before Camille could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

“Where?””

He grabbed his coat.

“What happened?”” Camille asked.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Patricia has been detained at the airport.””

Marcus stood.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the documents on the table.

“Because investigators found something in her luggage.””

“What?””

“A passport under another identity, more than two hundred thousand dollars in cash, and the original offshore ledger.””

Camille slowly stood.

“Then she's trying to flee.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Marcus.

“She was carrying the ledger to someone.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father.””

At the airport, Patricia sat in a private interview room.

Her handbag rested on the table.

A security officer stood beside the door.

When Daniel and the investigators entered, she lifted her chin.

“I want my lawyer.””

“You'll have access to counsel,” the investigator replied.

“But first, we need to ask about the ledger found in your luggage.””

Patricia looked at Daniel.

“Camille sent you?””

“Camille didn't send me. The evidence did.””

Patricia laughed bitterly.

“You all think you're so righteous.””

Daniel placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Richard Carter entering a private vehicle outside the clinic.

Patricia's expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your husband was preparing to leave the country. The ledger was meant to reach him.””

Patricia leaned back.

“He has a right to his property.””

“Not if it contains proceeds from unauthorized transfers.””

She stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered:

“Richard was supposed to leave before the board hearing.””

Daniel studied her.

“Why?””

Patricia looked up.

“Because he knows where the last thirty million dollars went.””

Daniel froze.

“Last thirty million?””

Patricia smiled faintly.

“You found the twenty-three million. You found the offshore account. You found the properties.””

She leaned forward.

“But you haven't found the money Arthur Carter hid before he died.””

Daniel's face changed.

“Where is it?””

Patricia looked directly at him.

“Ask Camille.””

At 9:00 p.m., Camille received an unexpected delivery.

A small wooden box had been left at her apartment.

There was no return address.

Inside was a photograph of Arthur Carter holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a handwritten note:

*The final Carter secret was never about money.*

Beneath the photograph was a birth certificate.

Camille read the name of the child.

Then she read the name of the mother.

Her hands went cold.

Because the woman listed as the baby's mother was not Patricia Carter.

It was her own mother.

May you like

And the baby's name was:

*Thomas Richard Reed.*
