Chapter 5: The Woman Who Held the Keys

The following morning, Camille arrived at the Carter Holdings headquarters at 8:40 a.m.

She hadn't been inside the building since Arthur's funeral.

The lobby remained exactly as she remembered it.

Black marble floors. Gold lettering. A massive chandelier suspended above the reception desk.

But something had changed.

People were whispering.

Two executives stopped talking when she approached.

The receptionist, a young woman named Olivia, looked startled.

“Good morning, Ms. Reed.””

Camille offered a polite smile.

“Good morning, Olivia.””

“Mr. Harrison is expecting you.””

“Thank you.””

As she crossed the lobby, she noticed several framed photographs along the wall.

Arthur Carter stood in the center of most of them.

In one photograph, he was shaking hands with Thomas Reed.

Someone had recently removed the small plaque beneath it.

Camille stopped.

“Olivia?””

“Yes, ma'am?””

“Who removed the plaque?””

Olivia glanced toward the security desk.

“I was told it was being updated.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know. Mr. Harrison's office sent the request.””

Camille studied the empty space.

Her father's name had disappeared from the company's history.

Just as Patricia had wanted.

“Thank you,” she said.

She continued toward the elevators.

The boardroom was already occupied when Camille entered.

Seven directors sat around the enormous table.

At the head was Richard Harrison, the company's current chairman.

He stood immediately.

“Ms. Reed. Thank you for coming.””

Camille placed her folder on the table.

“Good morning.””

One of the directors, a silver-haired man named Leonard Price, cleared his throat.

“I understand we're here to discuss the trust review.””

“Correct.””

“And the allegations concerning Mrs. Carter?””

“I'm not here to discuss allegations. I'm here to establish facts.””

Leonard exchanged a glance with another director.

“Your appointment as trustee was made by Arthur under rather unusual circumstances.””

Camille remained standing.

“Unusual doesn't mean invalid.””

Richard intervened.

“Let's keep this professional.””

He gestured toward a chair.

Camille sat.

Daniel Brooks joined through a video connection.

“We've completed the initial review,” he said.

“Several transfers require further investigation. Some involve properties owned by Carter Holdings. Others involve payments made to private entities.””

Leonard leaned back.

“Surely this can be handled privately.””

Camille looked at him.

“What does privately mean?””

He frowned.

“It means avoiding unnecessary damage to the company.””

“Then the best way to avoid damage is to establish the truth.””

A younger director spoke.

“Ms. Reed, with respect, you're asking us to investigate the family that employs half the people in this room.””

“No. I'm asking you to investigate financial transactions. The employees are not responsible for what their executives may have done.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“That seems reasonable.””

Leonard wasn't convinced.

“And what happens if the investigation implicates Marcus?””

Camille looked directly at him.

“Then the same standards apply.””

A tense silence followed.

Richard opened his folder.

“There's another matter. The bank has placed a temporary restriction on several trust-controlled transactions pending clarification of ownership.””

Camille nodded.

“I authorized the review.””

“Some directors are concerned that this could interfere with ongoing projects.””

“Then they should provide documentation showing which projects depend on the disputed funds.””

Leonard shook his head.

“This is becoming a hostile takeover.””

Camille leaned forward.

“Mr. Price, you keep describing this as a takeover. I'm asking for money that was diverted from a company in which my father held a legitimate ownership interest.””

She paused.

“Why does that sound like a threat to you?””

Leonard said nothing.

Richard cleared his throat.

“We'll cooperate with the review.””

Camille closed her folder.

“Good. Then I'd like the original partnership agreement produced within forty-eight hours.””

Leonard's expression changed.

“I don't know where that document is.””

Camille held his gaze.

“Then I suggest you find out.””

Across town, Marcus sat in a private conference room with Ethan Cole.

Ethan looked older than Marcus remembered.

His hair had thinned, and deep lines appeared around his eyes.

“You should have listened to me two years ago,” Ethan said.

Marcus stared at him.

“I know.””

“You asked me to process transactions that didn't make sense. I warned you.””

“My mother told me everything had been approved.””

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

“Your mother told everyone that.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Did you know about the hidden account?””

“I knew some money was being moved. I didn't know the full amount.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

“I tried.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

Ethan opened his briefcase.

He removed a printed email.

“Two years ago, I sent your mother a formal notice that the transfers violated the trust restrictions. She threatened to have me dismissed for breaching confidentiality.””

“And you left.””

“Yes. But before I left, I copied the records.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Do you still have them?””

Ethan placed a small encrypted drive on the table.

“Everything I could preserve.””

Marcus stared at it.

“Why are you giving this to me?””

“Because your grandfather was a decent man. He gave me a job when nobody else would. I won't let his work be erased.””

Marcus picked up the drive.

“Does this prove my mother stole the money?””

“It proves money was transferred to accounts she controlled. Whether she personally benefited from every transaction is something investigators will need to establish.””

Marcus nodded.

Then Ethan added:

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“Your father wasn't the only person who knew about the missing funds.””

Marcus looked up.

“Who else?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Your mother had help from someone inside the trust administration.””

“Who?””

“Someone who still works at Carter Holdings.””

Marcus stood.

“Tell me.””

Ethan opened another file.

A name appeared.

*Leonard Price.*

Marcus stared at it.

“The board director?””

Ethan nodded.

“He signed several internal approvals. And he was the person who arranged the original transfer of Thomas Reed's ownership records into a restricted archive.””

Marcus felt sick.

“So he's been protecting my mother.””

“That's what the documents suggest.””

Marcus picked up the drive.

“Thank you.””

Ethan stopped him at the door.

“Marcus, there's one more thing you need to understand.””

Marcus turned.

“Your grandfather didn't put Camille in charge because she was easy to manipulate. He chose her because she was the only person who could stand against this family without needing anything from it.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

For the first time, he understood why his grandfather had trusted Camille.

And why he had failed her.

At 4:15 p.m., Camille returned to Daniel's office.

Rebecca was waiting with a printed report.

“We found the original partnership agreement,” she announced.

Camille stopped.

“Where?””

“An off-site records facility. The file was transferred there eleven years ago.””

Daniel looked concerned.

“Who requested the transfer?””

Rebecca checked her notes.

“Leonard Price.””

Camille sat down.

“Can we retrieve it?””

“We've requested preservation of the archive. But there's a complication.””

“What complication?””

“The physical file was checked out yesterday.””

Camille's expression changed.

“By whom?””

Rebecca turned the report around.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

*Patricia Carter.*

Daniel stood.

“She knew we were looking.””

Camille looked at the date.

Yesterday.

The same day Patricia had told Marcus she was moving documents.

“Can we locate her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Her driver says she hasn't returned to the penthouse.””

Camille looked at her phone.

A new message had arrived.

It was from Marcus.

*Marcus:* "I found Ethan Cole. He gave me records showing Mom wasn't working alone.""

A second message followed.

*Marcus:* "I also found something about the original partnership agreement. We need to talk.""

Camille didn't respond.

Daniel studied her expression.

“Do you think he's telling the truth?””

“I think he's finally looking at the evidence.””

“Do you trust him?””

Camille looked down at her wedding ring, which she had kept inside her handbag.

“No.””

She put it back into the pocket.

“But I may need him to tell the truth.””

At 7:30 p.m., Marcus returned to the penthouse.

He had spent the afternoon reviewing Ethan's files.

One document particularly disturbed him.

It was an internal email from his mother to Leonard Price.

*Patricia:* "The Reed agreement cannot be allowed to surface. If the original ownership structure is confirmed, the entire succession arrangement becomes vulnerable.""

Leonard's reply was brief.

*Leonard:* "Then we need to ensure it never reaches the trustee.""

Marcus read the exchange again.

A knock sounded at the front door.

He opened it.

A young courier stood outside holding a large envelope.

“Mr. Marcus Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Signature, please.””

Marcus signed.

Inside the envelope was a single sheet of paper.

No sender's address.

No explanation.

Only a photograph.

It showed Patricia standing beside Leonard Price in front of a storage facility.

The photograph was dated the previous evening.

On the back, someone had written:

*ASK YOUR MOTHER WHAT HAPPENED TO THOMAS REED'S ORIGINAL WILL.*

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

His father-in-law's financial records were one thing.

But a missing will?

He immediately called Daniel.

“There's another document we need to find.””

“What document?””

“Thomas Reed's original will.””

Daniel fell silent.

Then he asked a question that Marcus hadn't expected.

“Marcus, where did you get that information?””

“A photograph was delivered to my penthouse.””

Daniel's voice became urgent.

“Listen carefully. Do not confront your mother until we establish what that will contains.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas Reed's will may prove that Camille inherited more than the ownership interest we've already identified.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“What else could she have inherited?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“The original voting rights attached to the Carter family's controlling shares.””

Marcus's phone slipped slightly in his hand.

If that was true, Camille wasn't merely entitled to a portion of the fortune.

May you like

She might have the legal authority to determine who controlled the entire company.

And Patricia had just taken the document that could prove it.
