Chapter 9: The Child Nobody Knew About

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

I didn’t hear it hit the floor.

I only saw Richard’s face.

The moment he looked at the picture, I knew.

He recognized it.

Not the way someone recognizes a stranger.

The way someone recognizes a memory they have spent years trying to bury.

“Richard,” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

“Who is the third child?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know she survived.””

The room went completely silent.

Clara stared at him.

“Who survived?””

Richard sat down slowly.

For the first time since I met him, he looked old.

Not wealthy.

Not powerful.

Just tired.

“Your grandfather believed the Whitmore family needed control,” he said quietly.

I clenched my fists.

“Don’t call him that.””

Richard looked at me.

“You’re right.””

His voice cracked.

“He was a monster.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard continued.

“When Evelyn gave birth, there were complications. The doctors discovered something unexpected.””

Anna looked confused.

“What?””

Richard looked at the photograph.

“There weren’t two babies.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Richard swallowed.

“There were three.””

The words felt impossible.

Three.

Three daughters.

Three lives stolen.

Clara covered her mouth.

Anna shook her head.

“No.””

Richard nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I found out later.””

“When?””

“Years after they disappeared.””

My voice became cold.

“And you still said nothing?””

Richard looked down.

“Because by then, my father had convinced everyone the records were destroyed.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone?””

He looked at me.

“Everyone except the person who helped him.””

“Margaret Vale.””

He nodded.

“She knew about the third baby.””

The photograph trembled in my hand.

A woman stood beside three infants.

Three tiny blankets.

Three silver moon lockets.

“Where is she?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“You never know.””

“I searched.””

“Did you search as hard as I did?””

The question destroyed him.

Because the answer was obvious.

No.

He hadn’t.

A knock interrupted us.

Detective Miller entered.

“We found Margaret Vale.””

Everyone turned.

My heart raced.

“Where?””

He placed a file on the table.

“She’s been living under another name for years.””

“Does she know about the girls?””

The detective looked at Clara and Anna.

“She knows everything.””

A few hours later, we sat across from Margaret in a quiet interview room.

I expected an old villain.

A cold woman with no regret.

Instead, I saw someone broken.

She looked at Clara.

Then Anna.

And immediately started crying.

“I thought you were dead.””

Anna’s expression hardened.

“You took me.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The room became silent.

“Why?”” Clara asked.

Margaret looked at her.

“Because Victor threatened my family.””

Nobody moved.

“He told me if I didn’t help him, my son would disappear.””

My anger burned.

“So you stole children to save your own?””

Margaret lowered her head.

“I was weak.””

“No,” I said.

“You were afraid.””

She looked at me.

“But you still did it.””

Tears fell from her eyes.

“Yes.””

For once, someone admitted the truth.

She opened the file in front of her.

“There were three girls.””

She pulled out old records.

“The first was Lily.””

She looked at Clara.

“The second was Anna.””

Then she touched the third document.

“And the third was Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“Emma.””

Margaret nodded.

“She was separated from the others during the storm.””

“Where is she?””

Margaret looked at Richard.

“She knows.””

Every eye turned toward him.

Richard froze.

“No.””

Margaret’s voice was quiet.

“You found her.””

I stared at my husband.

“Richard?””

He looked away.

And that was the moment I knew.

There was still one more lie.

“I thought she was dead,” he whispered.

“You thought?””

“I found a baby at the hospital after my father’s people left.””

Anna stood.

“You found her?””

Richard nodded.

“I was seventeen. I was terrified.””

My voice broke.

“What did you do?””

He closed his eyes.

“I took her.””

The room went silent.

“You took her?””

“I wanted to protect her.””

“From who?””

His answer was barely audible.

“From my father.””

My hands shook.

“Where is she?””

Richard looked at me.

“I gave her to someone I trusted.””

“Who?””

He whispered the name.

And my blood ran cold.

Because it was someone I knew.

Someone who had been in my life for years.

“Your sister,” Richard said.

I stopped breathing.

“My sister?””

He nodded.

“She raised Emma.””

The room spun.

My sister had a child.

My missing child.

All these years.

And I never knew.

Then Detective Miller’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Whitmore…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“We found Emma.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

The detective looked at Richard.

“She’s already at the estate.””

I froze.

“What?””

The door behind us opened.

A young woman stood there.

Around twenty-two years old.

With my eyes.

My smile.

My daughter’s face.

May you like

She looked at me and whispered:

“Mom?””
