Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Held The Missing Piece
The recording changed everything.
For years, I had blamed myself.
I blamed my body for failing.
My heart for breaking.
My mind for forgetting.
But the truth was worse.
Someone had stolen my memories.
Someone had convinced me I was the reason my daughters disappeared.
And Richard had stood there.
Watching.
Waiting.
Silence filled the Whitmore estate that night.
No one knew what to say.
Not even Richard.
Especially not Richard.
I walked past him without speaking.
I couldn’t look at him.
Not yet.
I went to Clara’s room.
She was sitting by the window, holding her silver locket.
The same way I used to hold Lily’s tiny fingers.
“Can I come in?”” I asked.
She nodded.
I sat beside her.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she whispered:
“Was I really loved?””
The question broke me.
“Oh, Clara.””
She looked at me.
“I know what the evidence says.””
Her voice shook.
“But my whole life, I thought my own mother gave me away.””
I took her hand.
“My child…”
The word came naturally.
“I never gave you away.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Then why did nobody come?””
I had no answer.
Because there was no answer that could heal that pain.
“I don’t know.””
And for once, honesty was the only thing I could offer.
“I don’t know.””
She looked down.
“I used to imagine meeting my real family.””
A sad smile appeared.
“I thought it would feel magical.””
I squeezed her hand.
“I did too.””
A quiet laugh escaped her.
It was the first time I had heard her laugh.
And somehow, that hurt even more.
Because I realized how many moments I had missed.
A knock came at the door.
Anna stood there.
“Can I join you?””
Clara nodded.
The two sisters sat beside each other.
Two strangers who shared the same blood.
Two people who should have grown up together.
“I remember something,” Anna said quietly.
We looked at her.
“From the night we were taken.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
She closed her eyes.
“A woman was there.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
She frowned.
“But she wore the same perfume you wear.””
I froze.
“My perfume?””
Anna nodded.
“And she kept saying your name.””
Clara looked confused.
“Your name?””
Anna opened her eyes.
“She said, ‘Evelyn will come for you.’”
The room went silent.
Because that meant one thing.
Someone had known.
Someone knew I would search.
Someone knew I would never give up.
The next morning, Detective Miller returned.
He placed a folder on the table.
“We found something.””
Inside were financial records.
Transfers.
Payments.
Old hospital documents.
My eyes moved over the names.
Then stopped.
One name appeared repeatedly.
A woman.
The same woman who had signed the original transfer papers.
The same woman who had access to the hospital records.
I looked at Miller.
“Who is she?””
He hesitated.
Then answered.
“Margaret Vale.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Richard heard it.
His face changed.
“No.””
I turned.
“You know her?””
He looked terrified.
“She was my father’s assistant.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where is she now?””
Detective Miller looked at the file.
“That’s the problem.””
“What problem?””
“She disappeared twenty-two years ago.””
Anna suddenly stood.
Her face had gone pale.
“I know that name.””
Everyone turned.
“You do?””
She nodded slowly.
“She was the woman who raised me before I went to foster care.””
I froze.
Clara grabbed her sister’s hand.
“What are you saying?””
Anna looked at us.
“My foster mother wasn’t the woman who found me.””
She swallowed.
“She was the woman who took me.””
The room went silent.
Then Anna reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this years ago.””
She handed it to me.
“Because she told me never to open it unless I found my real family.””
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A woman standing beside two baby girls.
And behind them…
A younger Richard.
The back of the photograph had one sentence written in red ink:
May you like
*Richard Whitmore knows where the third child is.*
Would you like Chapter 9 to focus more on the identity of the third child or on Richard’s hidden role in the disappearance?
