Chapter 9: The Woman My Father Married
Dad didn't speak for nearly a minute.
Then he asked, “What do you mean, Martin?””
“I don't know all the details,” Martin replied.
“But I found documents suggesting Nicole had used a different surname before she married you. Daniel helped her establish a new financial identity several years ago.””
“Why would he do that?””
“I suspect it was connected to the debts he was hiding. There are transfers between accounts associated with both of them, dating back long before your wedding.””
Dad stared at the phone.
“How long before?””
“Almost five years.””
My stomach tightened.
Nicole had told us she met Daniel through a property investment group shortly before Dad hired him to manage Mom's estate.
If Martin was right, she'd known Daniel long before she entered our family.
“Did Mom know?”” I asked.
“Yes,” Martin said.
“I believe she discovered it while reviewing the trust accounts.””
Dad stood and walked to the window.
“Then she didn't just suspect an affair. She knew they had been working together for years.””
“That's what the records suggest.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Martin's answer came quietly.
“Perhaps she was afraid you wouldn't believe her.””
Dad turned away from the window.
That possibility hurt him more than anything else.
Mom had trusted him with her life, her children, and her future. Yet somewhere near the end, she'd apparently believed he might defend his brother instead of listening to his wife.
I wanted to tell Dad that Mom had been wrong about him.
But the truth was more complicated.
When Nicole accused me of being pregnant, he'd believed her without asking for proof.
When Daniel showed him the security footage, he'd doubted me again.
And if Ethan hadn't found those recordings, Dad might still be defending the people who had betrayed us.
Martin gave us the address of a private storage company where he'd found the documents. Detective Harris had already secured the original files from the first unit, but she agreed to search the second location with a warrant.
Before she left, she warned us not to confront Nicole.
“We have evidence of a possible financial conspiracy,” she said.
“We also have a suspicious death that requires further investigation. We need to establish what each person knew, what each person did, and when they did it.””
Dad nodded.
“I understand.””
But I could tell he was struggling.
Nicole was still his wife. Whatever she'd done, he had loved her enough to invite her into our home, trust her with Ethan, and believe her when she accused me of lying.
He wasn't simply losing a marriage.
He was discovering that the person he'd relied on during his grief might have been exploiting it.
That afternoon, Dad received a call from Nicole's lawyer.
She had agreed to meet him at the house with her attorney present.
Dad wanted to refuse.
Then he looked at Mom's photograph on the table.
“I need to hear her explain it,” he said.
Detective Harris arranged for officers to remain nearby, and Dad agreed to record the conversation with everyone's knowledge.
I stayed with Ethan at the guesthouse while Dad returned home.
He called me from the study twenty minutes later.
“Emily, I need you to hear this.””
He put the phone on speaker.
Nicole's voice was clear and controlled.
“Richard, I know you've been shown things that make me look terrible. But you need to understand that Daniel has been lying to me, too.””
Dad asked, “Did you have an affair with my brother?””
A long silence followed.
Then Nicole said, “Yes.””
The blunt admission stunned me.
Dad's voice became rough.
“How long?””
“Several years.””
“Before you met me?””
“Yes.””
“Did you marry me because you loved me, or because you wanted access to Margaret's money?””
Nicole began to cry.
“I loved you.””
“Then why did you help Daniel change the trust?””
“I didn't understand what he was doing at first.””
“You signed the documents, Nicole.””
“He told me it was temporary! He said he needed to move money to protect the estate from taxes.””
“Did you know the beneficiary had been changed to him?””
Another silence.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Dad shut his eyes.
“Why?””
“Because he promised he would give me enough money to start over. He said we'd leave after the estate settled, and you would never know what happened.””
Dad's breathing became uneven.
“You planned to leave me?””
Nicole's voice rose.
“I was trapped! Daniel controlled everything. He had records of my old debts, my previous name, every mistake I'd ever made. He said if I didn't help him, he'd ruin my life.””
“So you helped him ruin ours instead?””
She sobbed.
“I never wanted Margaret to die.””
Dad went silent.
Then he asked the question that had haunted him since the hospital.
“What happened the night my wife died?””
Nicole stopped crying.
For several seconds, I heard only the hum of the air conditioner.
Finally, she said, “Daniel told me Margaret had taken too much medication. He said she'd been confused and had accidentally taken an extra dose.””
“Did you see her take it?””
“No.””
“Did you give her anything?””
“No.””
“Ethan saw you holding a bottle.””
Nicole inhaled sharply.
“Ethan was a child. He misunderstood.””
“Did you wash a bottle in the kitchen sink?””
No answer.
“Nicole!””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“I washed it.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“Why?””
“Daniel told me to remove it. He said the bottle had been left on the counter and that you would panic if you saw it.””
“What was in it?””
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe you washed a bottle without knowing what was inside?””
“He told me it was her medication!””
“Did you know he'd changed the prescription?””
Nicole began to cry again.
“I suspected something was wrong.””
Dad's voice dropped to a whisper.
“And you said nothing.””
“I was afraid.””
“So was Margaret.””
The words silenced her.
Dad continued.
“My wife was afraid in her own home, and you were helping the man she feared. Then you came into my house wearing her pearls and accused my daughter of being pregnant.””
Nicole's voice cracked.
“Richard, I was trying to keep you from looking at the estate accounts. Daniel said if you discovered the missing money, everything would collapse.””
“So you planted the test?””
She didn't answer.
“Nicole, did you plant the pregnancy test in Emily's bedroom?””
A long pause.
Then she whispered, “Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Even though I'd known it was a lie, hearing her confess made my stomach twist.
“Why?”” Dad asked.
“Because I needed you to stop trusting her. Daniel said Emily would eventually discover the financial transfers, and you would believe your daughter over us. We needed you to think she was unstable and dishonest.””
Dad's voice broke.
“You tried to destroy my daughter's reputation to protect a stolen inheritance.””
“I didn't know what else to do.””
“You could have told the truth.””
Nicole began to cry harder.
“Would you have believed me if I had?””
Dad didn't answer.
I understood then that the question wasn't really about whether he would have believed her.
It was about whether Nicole had ever intended to give him a chance to know the truth.
Dad ended the call shortly afterward and returned to the guesthouse.
He looked exhausted.
I stood when he entered.
“What happened?””
He sat down and told us everything.
Ethan listened quietly, holding his dinosaur.
When Dad finished, my brother asked, “Is Nicole going to jail?””
“We don't know yet,” Dad replied.
“The police have to investigate what happened.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Do you still love her?””
Dad stared at the floor.
“I don't know what I feel anymore.””
I sat beside him.
“That's okay.””
He looked at me, tears shining in his eyes.
“I believed her when she said those things about you. I took away your tuition money. I let you think your own father didn't trust you.””
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“You were grieving, Dad.””
“That doesn't excuse it.””
“No,” I said gently.
“It doesn't. But you can still make things right.””
He reached for my hand.
“I will.””
For a moment, I believed we might finally be able to begin healing.
Then Detective Harris called.
Nicole's lawyer had informed her that Nicole was willing to cooperate, but only if the police agreed to protect her from Daniel.
Investigators had also located a financial account connected to Nicole's former identity. It contained a large deposit made two days after Mom died.
The amount matched a transfer missing from the children's trust.
But there was something else.
A second deposit had been made three months later, shortly before Dr. Whitmore left the country.
Detective Harris believed the money might have been used to pay him off—or to silence him.
Dad looked at me.
“Then we need to find out where it went.””
Before I could answer, a new message appeared on my phone.
It was from Nicole.
*I'm sorry for what I did to you. I can prove Daniel planned everything, but you must come alone. There's something your mother discovered about your birth that Richard has never told you.*
I read the message twice.
My father watched my face change.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message, then looked at me with sudden alarm.
“Emily, don't respond.””
But another message arrived before he could take the phone from me.
*Your mother wasn't the only person Daniel intended to silence that night. He knows who your real father is.*
I felt the room spin.
My father stared at the screen.
Then he whispered, “That's impossible.””
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He couldn't meet my eyes.
And in that terrible silence, I realized Nicole might have found one last way to hurt us.

Or she might have uncovered the secret that explained why my mother had fought so desperately to protect me.
Either way, the next truth would change our family forever.
