Chapter 8: What Ethan Hid Inside the Dinosaur

“Ethan, sweetheart, I need you to tell me something.””

Dad knelt in front of my brother, careful not to sound frightened.

Ethan sat on the sofa with his blue phone in his lap. He stared at the dinosaur sticker on the case, tracing its raised edges with his thumb.

“What is it, Dad?””

“The police found a note saying you have something original. Do you know what that means?””

Ethan shook his head.

Then he hesitated.

“I think so.””

I moved closer.

“Whatever it is, you can tell us. You're not in trouble.””

He looked at me.

“Remember the green dinosaur Mom gave me for my birthday?””

I nodded.

It was a small stuffed toy with a crooked smile and one button eye. Mom had bought it at a hospital gift shop during one of her appointments because Ethan had insisted it looked like a dragon pretending to be a dinosaur.

He'd carried it everywhere for months after her death.

“Of course,” I said.

“You used to take it to bed every night.””

“I still have it.””

Dad glanced toward the hallway.

“Where?””

“In my school backpack.””

Ethan ran to the guest room and returned with the toy. He turned it upside down, carefully pulling apart a loose seam near its tail.

From inside, he removed a tiny black memory card wrapped in plastic.

My heart skipped.

“Ethan, where did you get that?””

“Mom gave it to me.””

Dad stared at the card.

“When?””

“The day before she died. She said it was a special game, but I wasn't supposed to show Nicole or Uncle Daniel.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I forgot. I was little, and then Mom died, and Nicole said I made things up. I thought maybe I'd imagined it.””

He held the card in both hands.

“But when I saw the video on my phone, I remembered Mom putting something inside the dinosaur.””

Dad pulled him into a hug.

“You did nothing wrong, son.””

Ethan buried his face against Dad's shoulder.

“I didn't want to lose another secret.””

I looked at the tiny card.

It could contain anything. Photographs, documents, audio files, or nothing at all.

But if Mom had hidden it inside Ethan's favorite toy, she must have believed someone would search the house.

And she hadn't trusted that person to find it.

Detective Harris arrived at the guesthouse twenty minutes later with a digital forensics specialist. She explained that they would create a forensic copy of the card, preserve the original, and examine the contents without altering the data.

Ethan insisted on sitting beside me while the specialist connected the card to a laptop.

The first folder contained scanned bank statements.

The second contained photographs of legal documents.

The third was labeled *FOR RICHARD*.

Dad leaned forward.

The specialist opened it.

A video appeared on the screen, dated two days before Mom died.

Mom was sitting at her desk in the study. Her face looked pale, but her eyes were clear. She wore the blue sweater I'd given her for Mother's Day.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, then I haven't been able to explain everything to Richard myself.””

Dad covered his mouth.

Mom continued.

“Richard, I need you to listen carefully. Daniel has been moving money from the children's trust into accounts I cannot identify. When I confronted him, he told me the transfers were temporary. They weren't.””

She held up a stack of papers.

“I found evidence that he has been using my signature to authorize transactions. I also discovered that someone changed the instructions for my medication.””

Dad whispered her name.

The video continued.

“I don't know whether Daniel intends to hurt me. I hope I'm wrong. But I know he's desperate. He has debts, and he believes the inheritance will solve them.””

Mom looked down at the papers.

“Nicole is involved. I've seen the messages between them. I wanted to confront Richard, but Daniel warned me that if I accused him, he'd tell Richard I was mentally unstable and had become confused because of my illness.””

My father began to cry silently.

Mom took a breath.

“There is one thing I haven't told Richard. It concerns the money my father left me before we married. Some of it was placed in a separate trust, and Daniel has been trying to gain control of it. If he succeeds, Emily and Ethan could lose everything.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

Mom turned toward the camera again.

“Emily, if you're watching this, please don't blame yourself for what happens. You have always been stronger than you realize. Protect your brother. And don't trust anyone who tells you that love requires silence.””

The video ended.

For several seconds, Dad couldn't move.

Then he pressed his hands against his eyes.

“She tried to tell me.””

I reached for him.

“She left us a way to find the truth.””

He shook his head.

“I should have listened while she was alive.””

The detective gave him a moment before speaking.

“Mr. Hayes, we have enough information here to investigate potential financial crimes. The medical evidence still needs independent verification. But this video gives us a clearer timeline and a motive to examine.””

“What about Nicole?”” I asked.

“We'll need to interview her again.””

Dad looked up.

“She knows we found something.””

The detective's expression tightened.

“Why do you say that?””

“Because she knew about the red envelope. She knew about the bank visit. She has been watching every move we make.””

The specialist opened another folder.

It contained several audio recordings, most of them short. One had been labeled with a date that matched the day before Mom died.

The detective asked the specialist to play it.

Nicole's voice emerged first.

“Daniel, Margaret has found the statements.””

Daniel answered, “How much does she know?””

“Enough to ruin everything.””

“Then you need to keep her away from Richard.””

“She won't listen to me.””

“Make her believe Emily is involved. Richard will protect his daughter, but he'll also be afraid of losing her. He won't know whom to trust.””

Nicole gave a nervous laugh.

“And if he asks about the money?””

“Tell him Margaret was confused. Once she's gone, Martin will handle the documents.””

There was a pause.

Then Nicole asked, “What about the medication?””

Daniel's reply was quiet.

“It's already been arranged.””

The recording ended.

Dad stood so quickly his chair scraped backward.

“That's it. That's enough.””

Detective Harris raised a hand.

“Mr. Hayes, we need to preserve this recording and verify its authenticity. It may be important evidence, but we must establish when and how it was made.””

Dad looked as though he wanted to storm directly to the house and confront Nicole.

I understood the impulse.

But we couldn't afford another mistake.

The detective arranged for officers to interview Nicole at the house. Dad agreed not to contact her beforehand.

Before she left, Ethan tugged on Detective Harris's sleeve.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“If the police know Nicole was lying, will she have to go away?””

The detective crouched to his height.

“That's for the investigation and the courts to determine. But you won't have to face her alone. Your family is working to keep you safe.””

Ethan considered that.

“Can I keep my dinosaur?””

Detective Harris smiled gently.

“Absolutely. It's yours.””

After she left, Dad sat beside Ethan and helped him sew the loose seam in the toy's tail.

They worked in silence for several minutes.

Then Dad said, “Your mother chose the perfect hiding place.””

Ethan smiled faintly.

“She said dinosaurs were good at keeping secrets.””

For the first time in days, Dad laughed.

It was a small, broken sound, but it was real.

That evening, Detective Harris called with an update.

Nicole had agreed to an interview but denied knowing anything about the altered prescription. She claimed the recordings were fabricated and insisted Daniel had manipulated her.

However, when investigators showed her the video from the memory card, she had asked for a lawyer.

Dad sat very still while the detective spoke.

“Does that mean she's guilty?”” I asked after the call ended.

“No,” Dad said.

“It means she knows the questions are getting harder to avoid.””

He looked toward the dark window.

“And Daniel?””

“Still missing.””

Dad's phone rang.

This time, it was Martin from his hospital room.

“Richard, I need to tell you something before the police hear it from anyone else.””

Dad put him on speaker.

“What is it?””

“I found a second envelope in Daniel's storage unit. It contains copies of the documents he used to change the trust. But there's a handwritten note attached to one of them.””

“What does it say?””

Martin hesitated.

“It's signed by Nicole.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she write?””

Martin took a shaky breath.

“'If Margaret dies before the transfer is complete, Richard must never learn that the beneficiary was changed.''”

Dad closed his eyes.

“Changed to whom?””

Martin answered.

“Daniel.””

The room went silent.

Mom's inheritance had been intended for her children.

Daniel had attempted to redirect it to himself.

But as Dad stared at the phone, I realized there was another question we hadn't answered.

Why had Nicole helped him?

Money alone didn't explain the pregnancy test, the threats against Ethan, or the desperate attempt to frame me for being at Daniel's office the night Mom died.

Then Martin spoke again.

“Richard, there's one more thing. The altered trust was only part of the plan. Daniel and Nicole had another reason to keep Margaret from changing her will.””

“What reason?””

Martin lowered his voice.

“Because your wife had discovered that Nicole wasn't just having an affair with your brother.””

He paused.

“She was also hiding something about her own identity.””
