Chapter 9: The DNA Test That Exposed Everyone
I spent the next twenty-four hours refusing to sleep.
Every time I looked at Emma and Lily, I wondered what Wes meant.
He had said the girls weren't biologically his.
But the trust agreement specifically named Wesley's first biological child as its beneficiary.
If he was telling the truth, why had he fought so desperately to control their inheritance?
And why had he allowed me to believe he was their biological father?
At 8:30 the following morning, Daniel returned with a woman named Dr. Elaine Brooks.
She was a reproductive medicine specialist who had been asked to review the clinic's original laboratory records independently.
"Holly," she said gently, "I know this is overwhelming. I'm going to explain what we have found, but I want to be careful not to draw conclusions before the testing is complete.""
I nodded.
She placed a folder on the table.
"The clinic's records show that your first successful embryo transfer involved a donor sperm sample.""
I stared at her.
"Donor?""
"Yes.""
"Who authorized that?""
"The authorization form contains a signature attributed to your husband.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Did I sign anything?""
"There's no valid consent form from you in the file.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Then it wasn't authorized.""
"That's why we're investigating the clinic's procedures and the people involved.""
Dr. Brooks continued.
"Your later successful treatment also appears to have involved donor material. However, the records contain inconsistencies, and we need genetic testing to establish the biological relationships.""
I looked at my daughters.
"Are you saying they might not be Wes's children?""
"That's possible.""
I swallowed.
"Who is the donor?""
Dr. Brooks opened another page.
"The original donor code is listed as RB-17.""
Daniel looked up sharply.
"RB?""
Dr. Brooks nodded.
"The clinic's archived donor register associates that code with a donor whose identity was restricted.""
Nathan, who had been standing near the window, stepped forward.
"Could I see that?""
Dr. Brooks handed him the document.
He read the code.
Then he went pale.
"What is it?"" I asked.
Nathan looked at me.
"Richard Bennett.""
I stared at him.
"Your grandfather?""
He nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
The room fell silent.
Dr. Brooks looked uncomfortable.
"According to the archived donor register, Richard Bennett donated sperm at a licensed clinic many years ago. However, the records do not yet establish whether that sample was used in your treatment.""
I felt dizzy.
"Why would my father-in-law's sample be involved?""
Nathan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Then he spoke.
"There's something we need to consider. Richard may have known about this possibility when he created the trust.""
I looked at him.
"Explain.""
"The trust specifically refers to Wesley's biological child. If Richard's sample was used, the girls might be biologically related to the Bennett family without being Wesley's biological children.""
I felt sick.
"Then why would Wes claim they were his?""
Nathan answered quietly.
"Because he might have believed the girls would still qualify for the inheritance.""
Daniel nodded.
"Or he may have believed the trustee would never discover the difference.""
I looked at Dr. Brooks.
"Can you test them?""
"Yes. With the appropriate consent and safeguards, we can arrange independent testing.""
I signed the necessary paperwork.
Not because I wanted to know whether my daughters were genetically related to Wes.
Because I needed the truth.
A few hours later, Margaret arrived.
She didn't knock.
She walked into the room carrying a designer handbag and a folder.
"I need to speak with Holly.""
Claire stood immediately.
"Not today.""
Margaret ignored her.
"I have every right to see my grandchildren.""
I looked at her.
"Why did you change my fertility records?""
She stopped.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely caught off guard.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Don't lie to me.""
She looked toward Daniel.
"Who has been filling her head with these accusations?""
I held up the copied email.
"Your message to Dr. Foster.""
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"You shouldn't have that.""
I felt cold.
"So it's real.""
Margaret put her handbag on the chair.
"Holly, you're not well. You've just had surgery. You need to stop listening to people who want to destroy this family.""
"Did you arrange for donor sperm to be used without my consent?""
She stared at me.
Then she turned toward Dr. Brooks.
"Who are you?""
"Dr. Elaine Brooks. I'm reviewing the clinic's historical records.""
Margaret's jaw tightened.
"This is a private family matter.""
"No," I said.
"It's my medical history.""
She stepped closer.
"You have no idea what you're risking.""
I laughed through my tears.
"That's what everyone keeps telling me.""
Margaret looked toward the bassinets.
Then she said something I would never forget.
"Those girls were supposed to secure the Bennett inheritance. That's all that mattered.""
Claire moved forward.
"Get out.""
Margaret ignored her.
"Wes was supposed to have a son.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She continued, almost angrily.
"Richard always wanted a grandson. He wanted the Bennett name to continue. When the clinic said the first treatment had failed, Wesley panicked.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Why?""
"Because he needed a child before his father changed the trust.""
Daniel immediately interrupted.
"Mrs. Bennett, I strongly advise you not to continue discussing this without legal representation.""
But Margaret had already started.
"Your husband had debts. Richard knew about them. He was going to remove Wesley from the company and put everything under the trust administrator.""
I stared at her.
"So you changed my treatment?""
Margaret looked away.
"I arranged for the best possible outcome.""
"By using donor sperm?""
"Richard's sample was available.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You knew it was his?""
She said nothing.
Then I asked:
"Did you know Wes wasn't the biological father of Emma and Lily?""
Margaret looked directly at me.
"Of course.""
My chest tightened.
"Then why did you want custody?""
"Because they're Bennett children.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
She leaned closer.
"Because if you controlled them, you could control the inheritance.""
I stared at her.
And suddenly, the entire scheme became clear.
They didn't want my daughters because they loved them.
They wanted them because of the money.
Margaret reached into her folder.
"Now, Holly, let's be reasonable. Sign the temporary guardianship agreement, and we can avoid an ugly court battle.""
I shook my head.
"Get out.""
"You don't understand.""
"Get out!""
She slammed the folder onto the table.
"You have no idea how much we've sacrificed to make this happen.""
Daniel stood.
"Mrs. Bennett, leave immediately.""
Margaret glared at him.
Then she turned toward the door.
But before leaving, she looked back at me.
"Ask Nathan why his grandfather never wanted him to inherit the company.""
Nathan's face changed.
Margaret smiled coldly.
"Ask him what Richard knew about his first marriage.""
Then she walked out.
Nathan remained silent.
I looked at him.
"What was she talking about?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he picked up his phone.
"I need to make a call.""
He walked into the corridor.
A few minutes later, he returned looking devastated.
"There's something I never told you.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"My mother died when I was a child. Richard always told me she died from complications after surgery.""
He swallowed.
"But I found an old letter in his estate files.""
"What did it say?""
Nathan looked toward Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Richard knew Margaret had interfered with the medical treatment of someone in our family before.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Who?""
Nathan's voice broke.
"My mother.""
I covered my mouth.
He continued.
"She had been pregnant when she died. Richard believed Margaret had deliberately concealed information about the pregnancy.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because if my mother had delivered that baby, the inheritance arrangements would have been different.""
The room went silent.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and slowly sat down.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He looked at me.
"The independent genetic laboratory has completed the preliminary analysis.""
My heart pounded.
"Are the girls Wesley's?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
I closed my eyes.
Then he continued.
"But that's not the most important result.""
I opened my eyes.
"What do you mean?""
Daniel placed the report on my blanket.
"The girls are genetically related to Richard Bennett.""
I stared at the page.
"Both of them?""
"Yes.""
"Then what does that mean?""
Daniel swallowed.
"It means Richard Bennett is their biological father.""
I felt the room spinning.
Then Nathan whispered something from beside the window.
"That means Wesley is their half-brother.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
My daughters were sleeping peacefully.
And the man who had promised to give me a family had apparently known that the children we were raising would be his own father's biological offspring.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why?""
He turned to the final page of the report.
"There is one more finding.""
"What?""
"The girls' genetic profiles are consistent with a sample recorded under Richard's donor identification. But there is another match.""
He paused.
"A close genetic relative has been identified.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked at Nathan.
Nathan's face went white.
Then Daniel said:
"The laboratory has identified Nathan Bennett as a biological relative much closer than the original records would suggest.""
Nathan took a step backward.
"That's impossible.""
But Daniel was already reading the final line.
*The results indicate that Nathan Bennett may be the twins' biological father.*
And suddenly, every secret in the Bennett family seemed to collapse at once.
May you like
Because the inheritance was no longer the only thing at stake.
My daughters' biological identity had become the center of a family scandal that began long before I ever met Wes.
