Chapter 4: The Inheritance That Changed Everything

I read the trust agreement six times.

Every time, the words stayed the same.

*THE FIRST BIOLOGICAL CHILD OF WESLEY BENNETT.*

I looked at Emma and Lily sleeping beside me.

"Claire," I whispered, "what does this mean?""

My sister pulled the phone closer.

"It means your father-in-law left something for Wes's first biological child.""

"But he knew we were struggling to conceive. He knew about all the treatments.""

Claire scrolled through the photograph.

"There's another page.""

I enlarged the image.

The second page contained a section about the inheritance.

The trust was established by Richard Bennett, Wes's father, nearly fifteen years earlier. It contained several commercial properties, investment accounts, and shares in a private manufacturing company.

The estimated value was listed in the document.

Twenty-eight million dollars.

I stopped breathing.

"Twenty-eight million?""

Claire looked at me.

"Holly, that's not a small inheritance.""

I shook my head.

"Why didn't Wes tell me?""

"Maybe he wanted to keep it secret.""

"But why?""

I scrolled further.

There was a condition attached to the trust.

The beneficiary had to be a biological child of Wesley Bennett. The funds would remain protected until the child reached twenty-five, with designated distributions available for education, medical care, and approved living expenses.

If Wesley never had a biological child, the assets would eventually pass to a charitable foundation named in his father's will.

I stared at the screen.

Then I noticed something.

The trust had been amended.

The amendment date was six weeks before my C-section.

The same date as the custody document.

"Claire, look.""

She leaned over.

The amendment introduced a provision allowing the trustee to appoint a temporary guardian to oversee the beneficiary's interests if the child's parents were separated or if either parent was deemed unable to act in the child's best interests.

The proposed guardian?

Margaret Bennett.

My mother-in-law.

I felt nauseated.

"They changed the trust six weeks ago.""

Claire nodded.

"And your husband signed the custody paperwork on the same day.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Why would he do that?""

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"Tell me everything.""

"Holly, I received the original trust documents this morning. I've also obtained the correspondence surrounding the amendment.""

"Why was the trust changed?""

"Your father-in-law had included a provision preventing either parent from transferring control of the inheritance to someone else. The amendment attempts to establish a temporary oversight arrangement through Margaret.""

"Attempts?""

Daniel paused.

"There are questions about whether the amendment was properly authorized.""

I gripped the phone.

"Was it legal?""

"That's something we need to establish. I don't want to give you a definitive answer before reviewing the original execution records.""

"Why would Wes do this?""

Daniel exhaled.

"Because he believes Margaret should control the money.""

I stared at my daughters.

"But it's their inheritance.""

"Exactly.""

"Then why does he need to remove me?""

Daniel was quiet.

Finally, he said, "Holly, there's another document. It's a separation agreement. Your husband signed it before the twins were born.""

I closed my eyes.

"Does it say he gets custody?""

"It proposes that the girls reside primarily with Margaret while you receive supervised visitation until an independent assessment determines you're emotionally fit to care for them.""

My sister covered her mouth.

I felt the room spinning.

"Supervised visitation? I'm their mother.""

"I know.""

"I carried them for nine months. I nearly died delivering them.""

"I understand, Holly.""

"Then how could he do this?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he asked, "Did Wes ever discuss his father's death with you?""

I frowned.

"Not much. He said his father died of a heart condition.""

"Did he ever mention a disagreement about the inheritance?""

"No.""

Daniel paused.

"Richard Bennett was concerned about his son's judgment. That's why he created the trust in the first place.""

I looked at Claire.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel continued.

"Richard didn't want the money controlled by Wesley. He wanted it protected for his grandchildren.""

I swallowed.

"Did he know Wes might try something like this?""

"Apparently, yes.""

My heart began pounding.

"How do you know?""

"Because Richard included a letter with the original trust documents. It was addressed to his first grandchild.""

I looked down at Emma and Lily.

"What did it say?""

"I haven't finished reviewing it. But I found a handwritten instruction attached to the letter.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"It says that if Wesley ever attempts to separate the child from its mother to gain control of the inheritance, the trustee must contact the independent family representative named in Richard's original estate plan.""

"Who is that?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your husband doesn't know that person is still alive.""

Before I could ask another question, a nurse entered.

"Holly, I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's someone asking to see you.""

"Who?""

She checked her tablet.

"Mr. Wesley Bennett.""

I nearly dropped my phone.

Claire stood up.

"Absolutely not.""

But I looked toward the door.

After everything he had done, I needed to see him.

I needed to hear him explain why he'd abandoned his wife and newborn daughters.

"Let him in," I said.

A moment later, Wes walked into the room.

He was wearing the same navy jacket he'd worn when he brought me to the hospital.

His hair was neatly combed. His shoes were polished.

He looked like a man going to a business meeting.

Not a father returning to see his newborn daughters.

His eyes moved toward the bassinets.

"How are they?""

I stared at him.

"That's your first question?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Holly, please. I know you're upset.""

"Where were you?""

"I needed some time.""

"Time?""

I pointed toward the bassinets.

"Your daughters were born yesterday, Wes.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Things are complicated.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Then explain them.""

He looked at Claire.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No," I said.

"Fine.""

He pulled a chair toward the bed.

Then he glanced at the phone in my hand.

"You've spoken to Daniel.""

It wasn't a question.

I nodded.

His jaw tightened.

"He's making this worse.""

"Did you know about the twenty-eight million dollars?""

Wes went completely still.

For the first time since he entered the room, he looked genuinely frightened.

"Who told you?""

I stared at him.

"Your father left that money to his first biological child.""

He looked toward Emma and Lily.

Then back at me.

"That's right.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't want money to become part of our marriage.""

I felt tears burning behind my eyes.

"You let me believe we were struggling financially while you were hiding twenty-eight million dollars?""

"It's not that simple.""

"Then make it simple.""

He leaned forward.

"Holly, I need you to understand something. My mother and I have a plan. It protects the girls.""

"From their mother?""

He looked away.

Then he said quietly:

"From what might happen if you get involved in the trust.""

I stared at him.

"What might happen?""

Wes lowered his voice.

"Your name isn't supposed to be anywhere near that money.""

And then he reached into his jacket and placed a photograph on my blanket.

It was a picture of me.

Taken outside my fertility clinic.

The date printed on the back was from eight months earlier.

I looked up.

"Why do you have this?""

May you like

Wes stood.

"Because, Holly, there's something about your pregnancy you still don't know.""
