Chapter 3: The Woman Waiting Outside My Door

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Wes standing in the hospital elevator, holding my hand and promising he'd be waiting.

Then I saw the empty chair.

At 6:15 a.m., I finally called Daniel Price.

He answered immediately.

"Holly?""

"Why did you witness that document?""

There was a pause.

"Are you alone?""

"My sister is here.""

"Good. Listen carefully. Has Margaret contacted you?""

"She's coming today, apparently.""

"Then I need you to be very careful.""

I gripped the phone.

"Daniel, what is happening?""

He exhaled.

"I can't explain everything over the phone. But I can tell you this: Wes has been preparing for a separation for several months.""

My throat tightened.

"A separation?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was representing your husband in a matter that I believed was being handled with your knowledge. I only recently discovered that you had not been informed of the full arrangement.""

I felt sick.

"What arrangement?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Your husband has been trying to establish a financial and custody position before the twins were born.""

I looked at Claire.

She was already shaking her head.

"Financial position?"" I repeated.

"There's a trust involved. And a property arrangement.""

"What trust?""

Daniel went silent.

Then he asked a question that made my blood run cold.

"Holly, did your husband ever tell you that his father left money specifically for his grandchildren?""

I frowned.

"No.""

"Not even when you started fertility treatment?""

"No. Wes said his father left him a small inheritance, but most of it went toward the house.""

Daniel sighed.

"That's not what the estate documents say.""

Before I could ask anything else, a nurse entered carrying medication.

"Mrs. Bennett, it's time for your pain relief.""

I told Daniel I would call back.

He insisted that I not sign anything.

Then he said one final thing.

"Please don't let Margaret convince you that this is just a family disagreement. There are documents I need you to see.""

The call ended.

Claire stood beside my bed.

"Your husband has a secret inheritance?""

"Apparently.""

"And his mother is involved.""

I looked at Emma and Lily sleeping beside me.

"What does any of this have to do with our babies?""

Claire didn't answer.

At 9:40 a.m., someone knocked.

A nurse opened the door.

"Mrs. Bennett, your mother-in-law is here.""

My stomach tightened.

Margaret walked in wearing a cream-colored coat, pearl earrings, and an expression that suggested she'd come to inspect a house rather than visit her newborn grandchildren.

She carried two large shopping bags.

"Well," she said, looking around.

"There they are.""

She approached the bassinet.

"Beautiful girls.""

I waited for her to look at me.

She didn't.

"How are you feeling, Holly?""

"Recovering.""

"Good. You'll need your strength.""

There was something strange about the way she said it.

Claire stepped closer.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret placed the shopping bags on the chair.

"Nothing dramatic, Claire. I simply want what's best for the children.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Margaret, why did Wes leave?""

She adjusted one of her pearl earrings.

"Your husband is under enormous pressure.""

"That's not an answer.""

"He has responsibilities you don't understand.""

I stared at her.

"He's my husband. I think I understand his responsibilities.""

Margaret sighed as though I were an exhausting child.

"Holly, let's not pretend this marriage has been healthy for some time.""

Claire stepped forward.

"Excuse me?""

Margaret ignored her.

"You've been consumed by the idea of having children for ten years. Every conversation revolved around treatments, appointments, and your disappointment.""

I felt the words like slaps.

"I wanted a family.""

"And now you have one.""

She gestured toward the bassinet.

"That's why we need to make some sensible decisions.""

I looked at her.

"What decisions?""

Margaret opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.

"Wes has arranged for the girls to stay with me temporarily while you recover.""

"No.""

She blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"They're staying with me.""

"You're recovering from major surgery, Holly. You can't even stand without help.""

"I can hold my children.""

"That's not the point.""

"Then what is the point?""

For the first time, her expression hardened.

"The point is that Wes and I have agreed on a plan.""

I stared at her.

"Without me?""

She opened the envelope.

"These are temporary care arrangements. All you need to do is sign.""

Claire snatched the envelope before I could touch it.

"She's not signing anything.""

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"Claire, this is none of your business.""

"She's my sister.""

"And I'm the grandmother of these children.""

Claire glanced at the first page.

Then she looked at me.

"Holly, don't sign this.""

Margaret reached for the papers.

"Give that back.""

Claire moved it behind her.

"What is this?""

"An agreement.""

"An agreement giving Margaret temporary authority over the girls' medical and residential decisions?""

Margaret lifted her chin.

"Until Holly is well enough to manage everything.""

I shook my head.

"I never agreed to that.""

Margaret leaned closer to my bed.

"Perhaps you should think about what you're capable of right now.""

I looked at her.

"I just gave birth to twins.""

"And you should be grateful we're offering help.""

The room fell silent.

Then Margaret said something that made Claire's face turn pale.

"Wes believes this arrangement is the only way to protect his daughters.""

"Protect them from what?"" I asked.

Margaret looked at me for a long moment.

"From the instability that comes with your condition.""

My hands began to shake.

"My condition?""

She gave a small, practiced sigh.

"Your doctor has already documented your anxiety.""

"That's because I went through ten years of fertility treatment!""

"Regardless, the paperwork exists.""

Claire stepped between us.

"Get out.""

Margaret's eyes flashed.

"Don't make this uglier than it needs to be.""

She turned toward the door, then stopped.

"Oh, and Holly? There's something else you should know.""

I stared at her.

"Wes has already moved his belongings out of your house.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

"He won't be returning.""

She picked up her handbag.

"He'll contact you through Daniel.""

Then she walked out.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Claire locked the door.

"Holly, breathe.""

But I couldn't.

My husband had left me.

His mother wanted control of my children.

And apparently, they had been planning all of this before I even entered the operating room.

A nurse came in shortly afterward to check my incision.

She noticed the envelope Claire had placed on the bedside table.

"Is everything okay?""

I shook my head.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Did my husband come here with his mother before the surgery?""

The nurse looked toward the door.

"Yes. They came together.""

"Did they leave together?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Did they take anything?""

The nurse frowned.

"Actually, I remember something unusual.""

I sat up as much as I could.

"What?""

"Your husband asked for the original copy of the babies' birth registration forms. He said he needed to check some details.""

My heart began pounding.

"Did you give them to him?""

"No. Those forms were still being processed.""

She paused.

"But he did leave with a folder from the admissions office.""

"What folder?""

"I don't know exactly. I wasn't the nurse assigned to your admission.""

After she left, Claire picked up her phone.

"I'm calling Daniel.""

But before she could dial, my phone lit up again.

This time, it was a text from Wes.

For the first time since the operation, my husband was contacting me.

I opened it with trembling fingers.

*Holly, I know you're upset. But there's something you need to understand. The girls were never supposed to be part of this.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*Ask Daniel what your father-in-law really left behind.*

I looked at Claire.

"My father-in-law?""

She took the phone and read the message.

Then she looked at me with an expression I'd never seen before.

"Holly, didn't you tell me Wes's father died before you got married?""

I nodded.

"Yes. Why?""

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

"Because I remember something you told me years ago.""

"What?""

She swallowed.

"You said Wes's father had been very wealthy. And that he'd promised to leave everything to his grandchildren.""

I looked down at my sleeping daughters.

Then my phone vibrated again.

A new message.

This one was from Daniel.

*Holly, I found the original trust agreement. You need to see whose name is listed as the sole beneficiary.*

And beneath it was a photograph of the first page.

I opened the image.

The name printed under BENEFICIARY wasn't Wes.

It wasn't Margaret.

It wasn't even me.

It was:

*THE FIRST BIOLOGICAL CHILD OF WESLEY BENNETT.*

My hands went numb.

May you like

Because suddenly, I understood why my husband had spent ten years promising me that we would have children.

And why he'd disappeared the moment they were born.
