Chapter 9: The Son Who Wanted His Father's Empire

The Grand Sterling Hotel had never looked more intimidating.

Police vehicles stood outside the main entrance. Security officers guarded the elevators, and the hotel's senior employees waited anxiously in the lobby.

Edward had barricaded himself inside the executive office.

He had refused to speak to anyone except his father.

Arthur entered the building at 11:06 p.m.

Daniel walked beside him.

James followed, carrying a folder containing the original financial reports and Margaret's will.

“Mr. Whitmore,” the security director said, “we've isolated the executive floor. Edward is alone inside the office as far as we can determine.””

Arthur nodded.

“Has he threatened anyone?””

“No, sir. But he's threatening to destroy the ownership records.””

Arthur looked toward the elevator.

“Take me up.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I'm coming.””

Arthur studied him.

“Are you sure?””

Daniel nodded.

“I've spent my entire life hearing half-truths about my family. I'm not leaving now.””

The executive floor was silent.

Two security officers stood outside the office.

Through the glass wall, Arthur could see Edward pacing.

A bottle of expensive whiskey sat on the desk. Several documents were scattered across the floor.

Arthur knocked.

“Edward.””

His son stopped walking.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he unlocked the door.

“Come in. Alone.””

Arthur glanced at Daniel.

“He stays.””

Edward laughed.

“Of course. Your new favorite employee.””

Daniel said nothing.

Arthur entered.

“Put the documents down.””

Edward picked up a thick folder.

“Not until you listen.””

“I'm listening.””

Edward walked behind the desk.

“You've spent your entire life pretending you built this company alone. But you didn't. I worked here.

I made the deals. I handled the difficult clients. I cleaned up your mistakes.””

Arthur looked at him.

“You were given every opportunity.””

“Exactly. Given. Everything was handed to me except the one thing I actually wanted.””

“What was that?””

Edward's voice rose.

“Your respect!””

Arthur fell silent.

Edward continued.

“You never trusted me with anything important. When I asked to lead the company, you said I wasn't ready. When I wanted control of the foundation, you said Margaret's wishes came first.””

Arthur's expression hardened.

“Because they did.””

Edward laughed bitterly.

“She was always your excuse.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your mother built something to help people. Why would you steal from it?””

Edward turned toward him.

“Stay out of this.””

“Your father didn't.””

Edward's eyes narrowed.

“Your father?””

Daniel held up the photograph.

“David Carter.””

For the first time, Edward looked genuinely shaken.

Arthur noticed.

“You know that name?””

Edward placed the folder on the desk.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my mother's records.””

Edward's expression changed again.

“Your mother should have kept her mouth shut.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“She spent her entire life trying to protect people from men like you.””

Edward slammed his hand against the desk.

“You don't know anything about my family!””

“Then explain it.””

Edward turned away.

Arthur watched him carefully.

“Edward, did you know Richard Collins before he joined the hotel?””

Edward didn't answer.

“Did you know Sarah Carter?””

Silence.

“Did you know David Carter?””

Edward suddenly grabbed the whiskey bottle.

Then he put it down.

“Fine.””

He looked at his father.

“You want the truth? Richard worked for me long before he became hotel manager.””

James stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Edward rubbed his forehead.

“He knew how to move money without attracting attention. I used him to manage certain accounts.””

Arthur's voice became quiet.

“Certain accounts?””

“The foundation. The hotel. A few other investments.””

“Two point four million dollars?””

Edward looked away.

“It wasn't supposed to become a problem.””

Arthur stared at him.

“Where did the money go?””

Edward didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Did you have anything to do with my father's death?””

Edward's face hardened.

“I didn't kill anyone.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Edward looked directly at Daniel.

“Your father discovered the accounts. He threatened to expose everything. Richard handled the situation.””

Arthur's face went pale.

“What do you mean, handled it?””

Edward looked toward the window.

“I didn't order anyone to kill him.””

The distinction made the room feel colder.

Daniel took another step.

“So you knew he was going to be hurt?””

Edward said nothing.

Arthur slowly lowered himself into a chair.

“Your mother knew.””

Edward looked at him.

“Mother knew everything. That's why she created the trust.””

Arthur stared.

“Why didn't you stop?””

Edward gave a bitter smile.

“Because I wanted what was mine.””

“None of it was yours.””

Edward's face twisted.

“You built an empire and expected me to stand outside it forever!””

Arthur shook his head.

“I expected you to earn your place.””

For a moment, Edward looked like a frightened little boy rather than a powerful executive.

Then his expression changed.

He reached into a drawer and removed a document.

“There's one thing you still don't understand.””

He placed it on the desk.

It was a signed agreement transferring a controlling interest in Sterling Hospitality Group.

Arthur examined it.

The signature appeared genuine.

But the date was from six months earlier.

“Where did you get this?””

Edward smiled.

“You signed it.””

Arthur stared at the paper.

“No.””

“You did. You were recovering from surgery. You authorized me to manage your affairs.””

“I authorized temporary access. Not ownership.””

Edward shrugged.

“That's what the document says.””

James took the paper.

His eyes moved across the clauses.

Then he noticed something.

“Arthur, this agreement references a medical authorization that doesn't exist.””

Edward's smile disappeared.

James continued.

“And the notary stamp belongs to a person who lost their license last year.””

Edward stepped backward.

Arthur stood.

“You forged my signature.””

Edward shook his head.

“You can't prove that.””

James placed the document inside his folder.

“We don't need to argue about it here. The authorities will examine it.””

Edward looked toward the door.

Two officers had appeared behind the glass.

His voice suddenly became desperate.

“Dad, wait.””

Arthur didn't move.

“I can explain.””

“You've had years to explain.””

“I can return the money.””

“It's not yours to return.””

Edward looked at Daniel.

“Tell him. You're getting everything you wanted. The foundation, the promotion, the attention. Isn't that enough?””

Daniel stared at him.

“I wanted to go home with my paycheck and pay my sister's tuition.””

Edward laughed bitterly.

“And now?””

“Now I want the truth.””

Edward's face darkened.

“You have no idea what you're asking for.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“Then tell us.””

Edward looked at his father.

Then, slowly, he began to speak.

“Richard didn't act alone. The man in that photograph was the person who arranged everything. He controlled the hospital board.

He controlled the police investigation. He even helped us hide the original will.””

James frowned.

“Who?””

Edward reached into his jacket.

He removed a small photograph and placed it on the desk.

Arthur picked it up.

His face changed immediately.

The man in the picture was standing beside Richard Collins and Edward.

He wore a dark suit and held a silver cane.

Arthur recognized the face.

He had attended his wife's funeral.

He had delivered a speech about family loyalty.

He had been Arthur's closest business partner for twenty-two years.

*Victor Hale.*

The former vice chairman of Sterling Hospitality Group.

The man everyone believed had died five years earlier.

Arthur looked at Edward.

“Victor is alive?””

Edward nodded.

“And he's the one who knows where the original ledger is.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is he?””

Edward hesitated.

Then he looked at the clock.

11:48 p.m.

“He's at the Grand Sterling.””

James immediately reached for his phone.

“That's impossible. We checked every guest registration.””

Edward gave a cold smile.

“He doesn't need to register.””

Arthur looked toward the door.

“Where?””

Edward whispered his answer.

“Room 1808.””

James went completely still.

“That room has been sealed for five years.””

Edward nodded.

“Exactly.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Your mother wasn't the only person Victor wanted silenced.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Edward continued.

“Victor has the original ledger. And it contains the names of everyone involved in your father's death.””

Arthur turned toward the officers.

“Get to the eighteenth floor. Now.””

But before anyone could move, the hotel's fire alarm erupted.

Red lights flashed across the executive floor.

A security officer shouted through the corridor.

“Fire on the eighteenth floor! Everyone evacuate!””

James looked toward Arthur.

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

Another unknown message.

*Victor is waiting. But if you want the ledger, come before the fire reaches Room 1808.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Arthur.

Somewhere above them, behind a door that had remained locked for five years, was the truth about his father.

And the building was burning.
