Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Perfect Hotel
Richard Collins had spent six years building his reputation as the most successful manager in the Sterling Hospitality Group.
His monthly reports were immaculate.
Guest satisfaction scores were high. Revenue had increased every quarter. His photographs appeared in industry magazines, and senior executives praised his leadership.
But the numbers on the paper in front of him told a different story.
James placed his tablet on the counter.
“According to our preliminary audit, more than forty guests were charged for additional nights they never stayed.””
Richard forced a laugh.
“That's an accounting error. These things happen in a hotel.””
“Forty times?”” James asked.
“Human error.””
“Across six months?””
“System errors.””
James tapped the screen.
“And these transfers to a private consulting company registered under your brother's name?””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“That's none of your business.””
Arthur slowly removed his glasses.
“Everything involving this hotel is my business.””
The guests had stopped pretending not to listen.
A businessman near the lounge whispered something to his wife.
A young couple began recording with their phones.
Richard noticed.
“Everyone needs to return to their rooms. This is a private corporate matter.””
Arthur looked at him.
“You were perfectly comfortable making Daniel's dismissal a public matter.””
Richard said nothing.
James continued.
“We also have statements from employees who claim they were instructed to charge guests for complimentary services and transfer the difference into an account controlled by your brother.””
Richard shook his head.
“This is ridiculous.””
“Then explain the invoices.””
James slid three printed pages across the counter.
Richard didn't touch them.
Vanessa stood behind the reception desk, her face pale.
Arthur noticed her.
“Miss, what's your name?””
“Vanessa, sir.””
“Have you worked here long?””
“Almost two years.””
“Have you witnessed anything unusual?””
Richard snapped.
“Vanessa, don't you dare.””
She flinched.
Arthur turned toward him.
“Did I ask you?””
Vanessa looked between the two men.
Her fingers tightened around a pen.
“Sir, I... I don't want to lose my job.””
Arthur's expression softened.
“You won't be punished for telling the truth.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You can't promise that.””
James stepped forward.
“I can. Retaliation against an employee who cooperates with an internal investigation is grounds for immediate disciplinary action.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He gave her a small, encouraging nod.
She took a breath.
“Mr. Whitmore, there's something you should know.””
Richard's face darkened.
“Vanessa, this is your final warning.””
She continued.
“Last month, a family checked out early because their little boy had to be taken to the hospital. Mr. Collins instructed us to charge them for the remaining four nights anyway.””
Arthur frowned.
“Why?””
“He said the cancellation policy allowed it. But their booking was refundable because of the medical emergency.””
James looked down at his tablet.
“Do you have the booking reference?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I kept a copy.””
She opened a drawer and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“I wasn't sure what to do with it.””
James accepted the document.
Then he looked at Richard.
“This reservation was marked as a medical exception. The family should have received a full refund.””
Richard shrugged.
“They could afford it.””
Arthur stared at him.
“That's your explanation?””
Richard's voice rose.
“Do you know how difficult it is to manage a luxury hotel? Guests complain about everything. Employees demand raises.
Suppliers increase prices. I have to make decisions.””
“And stealing from families is one of them?”” Arthur asked.
“I didn't steal anything!””
James turned his tablet toward him.
“Then perhaps you can explain this transfer.””
Richard stared at the screen.
The transfer was dated three weeks earlier.
The amount was $18,500.
The recipient was a company called Collins Hospitality Consulting.
The registered director was Richard's younger brother.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Richard pointed toward Daniel.
“This is all because of him! He brought this situation into the lobby. If he had simply followed instructions, none of this would be happening.””
Daniel looked at him in disbelief.
“I just checked a man's reservation.””
“Exactly! You should have kept your head down!””
Arthur walked slowly toward Richard.
“Do you know what I saw when I entered this building?””
Richard didn't answer.
“I saw a young man working behind a beautiful marble counter. I saw an employee who looked at an elderly stranger and decided that he deserved dignity.””
Arthur glanced at the crystal chandeliers above them.
“Then I saw a manager who believed a person's worth could be measured by the price of his jacket.””
He paused.
“That's not luxury, Richard. That's insecurity dressed in an expensive suit.””
A few guests quietly applauded.
Richard's face turned crimson.
“You can't fire me based on accusations!””
Arthur nodded.
“Correct. We will conduct a proper investigation. You will be placed on immediate administrative suspension, and the board will review the evidence.””
Richard looked toward James.
“You're really going to let him do this?””
James straightened his jacket.
“Mr. Whitmore is the majority owner. And the evidence will be handled according to company procedure.””
Richard looked around desperately.
Then his eyes landed on Daniel.
“You think you've won, don't you?””
Daniel remained silent.
“You'll regret getting involved in this.””
James stepped between them.
“Security will escort you to your office to collect your personal belongings. Your access to the management systems is suspended immediately.””
Two guards approached Richard.
He pulled away.
“Don't touch me! I know people on the board!””
Arthur remained still.
“Then you should call them.””
The guards escorted Richard toward the elevators.
But just before the doors closed, Richard turned around.
He pointed directly at Daniel.
“This isn't over!””
The elevator doors shut.
For the first time since the incident began, the lobby seemed to breathe again.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
James turned toward Daniel.
“Your position has been reinstated. Mr. Whitmore also wants to discuss a promotion.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“Sir, I appreciate that, but I don't know if I'm ready to manage people.””
Arthur smiled.
“Neither did I when I started my first business.””
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small business card.
“Come and see me tomorrow morning. I'd like to talk about something bigger than a promotion.””
Daniel accepted the card.
It read:
*ARTHUR J. WHITMORE* Founder and Chairman Sterling Hospitality Group.
Daniel looked up.
“What exactly do you have in mind?””
Arthur glanced toward the elevators where Richard had disappeared.
Then he looked back at Daniel.
“Something I've wanted to do for years.””
He lowered his voice.
“I want to change the way this company treats people. And I think you're the person who can help me.””
Daniel stared at the card.
But before he could respond, James's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
“Mr. Whitmore,” he said quietly.
Arthur turned.
“What is it?””
James covered the microphone.
“It's the hotel's security director. He says there's an urgent problem.””
“What problem?””
James hesitated.
Then he spoke the words that made Arthur's smile disappear.
“Someone has deleted the original security footage from the lobby.””
Arthur looked toward the ceiling-mounted cameras.
“Who had access?””
James glanced at his phone again.
“The system shows that the footage was deleted using your personal executive authorization code.””
Arthur went completely still.
Because he hadn't given anyone permission to use it.

And there was only one person besides him who knew that code.
*His own son.*
