Chapter 5: The Truth Daniel Left Behind

The knock on the door came three times.

Slow.

Confident.

Like whoever stood outside already knew they belonged there.

Nobody moved.

I stood in the middle of Daniel’s bedroom, holding his letter against my chest.

Twenty-eight years ago, I had opened my home to a frightened young man with nothing but a broken suitcase and a lost look in his eyes.

Now, twenty-eight years later, I was learning that the son I loved had spent his entire life running from something.

Victor stepped in front of me.

“Stay behind us.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“Mrs. Carter—”

“My whole life, people have told me what I can and cannot handle because I’m old.””

I looked toward the front door.

“I buried my husband. I buried my son. I lived through losing everything.””

My grip tightened.

“I’m not hiding in my own house.””

For a moment, Victor didn’t say anything.

Then he nodded.

“Alright.””

The youngest biker smiled slightly.

“She’s tougher than all of us.””

Nobody laughed.

The knock came again.

This time louder.

A voice called from outside.

“Mrs. Carter? We need to talk.””

Richard Hale looked nervous.

“You shouldn’t answer.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because if they know you have that letter, everything changes.””

Victor looked at him.

“You know who they are.””

Richard stayed silent.

Victor stepped closer.

“You walked into that diner pretending to be surprised, but you knew something was happening.””

Richard looked down.

“I knew someone was searching for Daniel’s records.””

“And you didn’t tell her?””

“I was trying to protect her.””

Victor laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“Protect her?””

He pointed toward the door.

“They found her house.””

Richard had no answer.

The door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

Then Victor opened a drawer near the desk and pulled out a small object.

Not a weapon.

A recorder.

“I found this in Daniel’s room.””

I stared.

“You found it?””

Victor nodded.

“Inside the metal box.””

My heart raced.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted to hear it first.””

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Daniel’s voice.

My knees almost gave out.

“Mom…”

I covered my mouth.

It was him.

Older.

Tired.

But still my son.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.””

The recording continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything, but I was afraid. Not for myself.””

A pause.

“For you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

Daniel continued.

“You saved my life when nobody else would. You gave me a home. A name. A reason to keep going.””

I closed my eyes.

“I need you to know something.””

His voice became quieter.

“I never lied because I didn’t love you.””

A tear fell down my cheek.

“I lied because I loved you too much to put you in danger.””

Nobody in the room spoke.

Then the recording changed.

A different voice appeared.

A man.

Older.

Angry.

“You think you can hide forever?””

Daniel’s voice returned.

“I know what you did.””

A silence followed.

Then the recording ended.

Victor looked at Richard.

“Who was that?””

Richard didn’t answer.

The front door suddenly shook.

Someone outside shouted.

“Mrs. Carter!””

Victor looked at the others.

“Back room. Now.””

But before anyone moved, Richard stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face had changed.

No more pretending.

No more careful words.

“I know who that voice belonged to.””

Victor stared.

“Say it.””

Richard swallowed.

“Thomas Blackwood.””

The name hit me.

The same name Victor had mentioned earlier.

Victor’s expression turned dark.

“My father’s business partner.””

Richard nodded.

“And the man who was supposed to protect Daniel.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Supposed to?”” I whispered.

Richard looked at me.

“He was supposed to help Daniel inherit the family trust.””

“Then why would he hurt him?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“Because Daniel discovered the trust wasn’t empty.””

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard opened his briefcase.

He removed another document.

“The money wasn’t stolen.””

He placed it on the table.

“It was moved.””

I looked down.

Thousands of pages.

Accounts.

Names.

Transactions.

And one signature appearing again and again.

Thomas Blackwood.

Then the front door burst open.

Everyone turned.

But the person standing there wasn’t Thomas.

It was a woman.

An elderly woman.

She stepped inside slowly.

And when she saw the photograph on the table, her face changed.

“Oh my God…”

Victor stared.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“I knew Daniel was alive.””
