Chapter 3: The Name On The Paper

I stared at the document in the man’s hand, but my eyes refused to understand what I was seeing.

My name.

Not Daniel’s.

Mine.

The room felt smaller.

The noise of the diner faded into the background until all I could hear was my own breathing.

Victor looked at the man in the suit.

“What is this?””

The man tightened his grip on the folder.

“My name is Richard Hale. I represent the Carter estate.””

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“You didn’t answer my question.””

Richard glanced at me.

“I’m here because Mrs. Carter has been receiving information that isn’t complete.””

I almost laughed.

“Not complete?””

My voice shook.

“You came to my apartment three times telling me I had no claim. You told me my son left everything to people I had never met.””

Richard’s expression remained controlled.

“Because legally, that’s what the documents showed.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Then why does her name appear on a file connected to my brother?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

For the first time since he walked in, he looked like he didn’t have control of the situation.

“That file should never have been found.””

The words slipped out.

And everyone heard them.

Victor slowly turned his head.

“Should never have been found?””

The biker behind him stood.

“Victor…”

“No,” Victor said quietly.

“Let him talk.””

I looked at Richard.

“What is happening?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Like he was choosing every word carefully.

“Mrs. Carter, your son was involved in something before you knew him.””

My heart sank.

“Daniel was a good man.””

“I didn’t say he wasn’t.””

“Then don’t speak about him like he was some stranger.””

Richard looked away.

“I’m saying Daniel had another life.””

Victor grabbed the edge of the table.

“My brother disappeared because someone wanted him gone.””

Richard looked at him.

“Maybe.””

The single word changed the air.

Victor’s face hardened.

“Maybe?””

Richard looked down.

“You don’t know what happened twenty-eight years ago.””

Victor’s voice lowered.

“Neither did I.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Victor looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, did Daniel ever mention a place called Blackwood?””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Did he ever mention a man named Thomas?””

I searched my memory.

The name felt familiar.

But not from Daniel.

From somewhere else.

“I don’t know.””

Victor watched my face closely.

“You’re remembering something.””

I looked down.

A strange feeling moved through me.

A conversation from years ago.

Daniel sitting at my kitchen table late at night.

The way he held his coffee but never drank it.

The way he looked toward the window.

“Mom,” he had said.

I had almost forgotten that night.

“What did he say?”” Victor asked.

I swallowed.

“He told me…”

My voice cracked.

“He told me if anyone ever came asking questions, I should say I didn’t know anything.””

Victor went completely still.

Richard looked away.

That reaction told me more than words ever could.

“You knew,” Victor said.

Richard didn’t answer.

Victor slammed his hand onto the table.

Not violently.

But enough that the silverware jumped.

“You knew he was alive.””

Richard’s silence was the answer.

I felt my chest tighten.

“All these years…”

My voice became smaller.

“You knew my son existed?””

Richard looked at me.

“I knew someone existed.””

The sentence made no sense.

Until he continued.

“But I didn’t know he was Daniel Carter.””

Victor stared at him.

“Explain.””

Richard opened the folder.

Inside were old documents, photographs, and records.

“I was hired years ago to locate a missing heir.””

My fingers curled around my purse.

“Heir?””

Richard nodded.

“Your son wasn’t just a missing person.””

He looked at Victor.

“He was the last surviving member of the Blackwood family trust.””

The bikers exchanged confused looks.

Victor’s face changed.

“Blackwood?””

Richard nodded.

“A company worth millions disappeared after the founder died. Everyone believed the heir was gone.””

I felt dizzy.

“My son never cared about money.””

“I believe you.””

“Then why hide this?””

Richard looked at the photograph again.

“Because someone else cared.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Richard closed the folder.

Before he could answer, Victor’s phone rang.

He looked down.

His expression changed instantly.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

He answered.

A few seconds passed.

Then his face went pale.

“Say that again.””

Silence.

Victor looked at me.

Then at Richard.

“They found Daniel’s private records.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

Victor slowly lowered the phone.

“At the one place nobody thought to look.””

May you like

He stared at the old photograph.

“Your house.””
