Chapter 3: The Secret Upstairs

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Daniel stood at the end of the hallway, his face hidden partly in the darkness. He wasn't surprised to see me.

That was the part that terrified me.

He looked at Emily.

Not at me.

At Emily.

"What are you doing?"" he asked quietly.

Emily's fingers tightened around my wrist.

"I could ask you the same thing.""

Daniel slowly walked closer.

"Claire, come here.""

I didn't move.

Something in his voice had changed.

The warmth was gone.

The playful confidence.

The man who had held my hand while driving through the countryside was gone.

This was someone else.

"Daniel," I said, keeping my voice steady, "why are you here?""

He looked confused.

"I live here.""

"Your apartment is thirty miles away.""

A pause.

Tiny.

But I noticed.

Emily noticed too.

Daniel's eyes shifted toward her.

"You told her?""

Emily looked down.

"I didn't tell her anything.""

"Then why is she here?""

I stepped between them.

"Because she asked me to come.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Claire, you need to leave.""

The way he said it wasn't a request.

It was an order.

And suddenly, every strange moment from the weekend came rushing back.

The way his mother controlled every conversation.

The way his father ignored Emily.

The way Daniel defended them without hesitation.

I looked at Emily.

"What's behind that door?""

Daniel's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But enough.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Nothing," he said.

Emily let out a bitter laugh.

"That's what you always say.""

Daniel turned sharply.

"Emily.""

The warning in his voice made her flinch.

I felt something inside me snap.

"Stop talking to her like that.""

Daniel looked at me.

"You don't understand this family.""

"You're right.""

I took a step closer.

"I don't.""

The hallway became silent.

Then Emily reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a small brass key.

My heart dropped.

"Claire," she whispered, "you need to see this.""

Daniel moved forward.

"No.""

One word.

Sharp.

Absolute.

Emily looked at him.

And for the first time that night, I saw something besides fear in her eyes.

Anger.

"You don't get to decide anymore.""

She unlocked the door.

The room behind it was small.

Cold.

A single window was covered by thick curtains.

There was an old desk.

A filing cabinet.

And dozens of papers stacked across the surface.

At first, I didn't understand what I was looking at.

Then I saw my name.

Claire Bennett.

Printed on a folder.

My stomach turned.

I grabbed it.

Inside were pages.

My job history.

My college information.

Photos of me.

Not just recent pictures.

Pictures from years ago.

Walking into my first apartment.

Leaving my office.

Sitting at a coffee shop.

Someone had been watching me.

Someone had been collecting information about me.

"Why does my name appear in here?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

His face was pale.

"Daniel?""

He looked away.

That was the answer.

"You knew.""

"No.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I didn't know about that folder.""

Emily shook her head.

"He's lying.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Emily walked to the filing cabinet and opened the top drawer.

She pulled out another folder.

"This is what they keep.""

My hands shook as she opened it.

Inside were documents about Emily.

Medical records.

Bank statements.

Private messages.

Everything.

"They wanted everyone to think I was sick," Emily whispered.

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

She swallowed.

"My mother changed my medical appointments. She told doctors things I never said. She made everyone believe I was unstable.""

The room felt smaller.

"Why?""

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Because I found out what they were doing.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Emily, stop.""

But she didn't.

"I found out they were controlling people.""

My heart raced.

"What people?""

Emily looked at me.

"Women.""

A chill ran through me.

She pointed toward the folders.

"Your file isn't the first one.""

I looked at the cabinet.

There were dozens.

Different names.

Different women.

Some I recognized from Daniel's old stories.

Some I didn't.

Then I saw one folder sitting on top.

The newest one.

It had been opened recently.

The name written across it made my blood run cold.

VICTORIA MERCER.

No.

Not Victoria.

Daniel's mother.

Emily noticed my expression.

"There's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

She looked toward Daniel.

"He wasn't bringing you here to meet his family.""

The lights suddenly flickered.

Daniel stepped backward.

And for the first time, I saw real panic on his face.

May you like

Because someone else was in the house.

Someone who wasn't supposed to find us.
