Chapter 10: The Truth They Buried
The Mercer estate looked exactly the same when we returned.
That was the strangest part.
The windows glowed warmly.
The garden lights were still on.
The house looked peaceful.
Like it wasn't hiding years of destruction.
Emily walked beside me.
"No matter what happens, don't separate from me.""
I nodded.
"And Natalie?""
"She's safe for now.""
"For now?""
Emily looked at the house.
"With my father, nothing is forever.""
The front door opened before we reached it.
Richard stood there.
Calm.
Almost polite.
"I was wondering when you would stop hiding.""
I stepped forward.
"Where is Daniel?""
Richard smiled.
"Still worried about him?""
"Where is he?""
"Inside.""
Emily's voice hardened.
"Let him go.""
Richard looked at his daughter.
"You have always misunderstood everything.""
"No.""
Emily shook her head.
"I understood exactly.""
He sighed.
"Your mother and I built something.""
"A prison?""
"A system.""
The confidence in his voice made my skin crawl.
"We protected this family.""
"You destroyed people.""
Richard looked at me.
"You think the world is kinder than it is.""
I laughed quietly.
"That doesn't excuse what you did.""
His expression remained calm.
"You have no idea what we did.""
Then he stepped aside.
"Come inside.""
I didn't move.
"Why?""
"Because you want answers.""
He smiled.
"And because you need to know what Daniel really did.""
Inside, the house felt different.
No warmth.
No elegance.
Only secrets.
Richard led us to the study.
Daniel was there.
Sitting in a chair.
His face was bruised.
The moment he saw me, he stood.
"Claire.""
I almost ran to him.
Almost.
Then I remembered everything.
The lies.
The files.
Natalie.
Emily touched my arm.
A reminder.
Stay alert.
Richard placed a folder on the desk.
"The truth.""
I looked at it.
"What is this?""
"Daniel's confession.""
Daniel's face changed.
"Don't.""
Richard smiled.
"Why? She deserves to know.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were pages.
A statement.
Signed by Daniel.
My hands shook as I read.
*I helped my father maintain the system.*
My heart dropped.
I looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
"I can explain.""
I kept reading.
*I provided information. I identified weaknesses. I helped select targets.*
I couldn't breathe.
"Daniel...""
"Claire, please.""
I stepped back.
"Was any of it real?""
His face broke.
"Yes.""
"How can I believe that?""
"Because I hated myself for it.""
The room was silent.
Richard laughed.
"Pathetic.""
Daniel looked at him.
"You made me into you.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
And in that moment, I understood.
Daniel wasn't innocent.
But he wasn't his father either.
He was someone who had spent years trying to escape the person his family created.
Emily walked to the desk.
"There is one thing you forgot.""
Richard looked at her.
"What?""
She pulled out her phone.
A recording was already playing.
Richard's own voice filled the room.
*People are easier to control when they think they are being loved.*
His face changed.
"You recorded me?""
Emily smiled.
"No.""
She looked at me.
"Claire did.""
I froze.
I remembered.
The moment in the study.
My phone in my pocket.
Recording everything.
Richard moved forward.
But before he reached us, police lights flashed through the windows.
Someone had called.
Someone had finally listened.
Months later, the Mercer estate was no longer a symbol of perfection.
It became evidence.
Natalie gave her statement.
Emily started rebuilding her life.
And Daniel...
Daniel spent a long time answering for the choices he made.
I never forgot what happened.
I never pretended love erased betrayal.
But I learned something important.
The most dangerous secrets are not always hidden behind locked doors.
Sometimes they are hidden behind smiles.
Behind family photographs.
Behind the words:
"I would never hurt you.""
Years later, I still had the note Emily gave me that night.
The paper was worn.
The ink had faded.
But the message remained.
*COME BACK AT 10 P.M. YOU WILL SEE WHAT YOU NEED TO SEE.*
She was right.
I did see what I needed to see.
Not just the truth about her family.
The truth about mine.
