Chapter 8: The Last Lie My Mother Told

Nobody spoke after my mother admitted it.

Five million dollars.

That was what my father had built.

And my mother had handed it to Richard Hale.

I stared at her, waiting for an explanation that might somehow make sense.

But she only sat on the sofa, twisting her wedding ring around her finger.

"Why?"" I finally asked.

Monique looked up.

"Because I was trying to save the family.""

"From what?""

"From losing everything.""

"We had a company worth five million dollars!""

"That was its estimated value. It wasn't cash sitting in a bank account.""

"Then where did the money go?""

She pressed her lips together.

Evelyn opened her folder.

"Monique, I suggest you answer carefully. We have records showing transfers totaling more than two hundred thousand dollars from the children's trust, as well as unauthorized company transactions.""

My mother looked at her.

"You don't know what happened after Arthur died.""

"Then tell us.""

Monique wiped her eyes.

"Richard came to me after the funeral. He said Arthur had borrowed money from private investors. He said the business was going to collapse unless someone paid the outstanding loans.""

I frowned.

"Why didn't you contact Denise?""

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Why didn't you contact Evelyn?""

My mother looked at her.

"Because I knew she'd take the company away from me.""

Evelyn's expression remained calm.

"That was never my intention. Your husband's instructions were clear. The company was to remain protected for his children.""

Monique laughed bitterly.

"Protected? You would have given everything to Zarya!""

"That was his decision.""

"And what about me?""

I stared at my mother.

There it was.

Not concern for the family.

Not fear for our future.

Resentment.

She had spent six years angry that my father had left something specifically for his children.

"Mom," I said quietly, "you could have kept the house. You could have worked. You could have asked for help.""

"I did ask for help!""

"From Richard?""

She looked away.

"He promised he could restore the business.""

"Instead, he took the money.""

Monique's silence answered me.

Evelyn turned another page.

"There's another problem. The financial records show that several transfers were made after Richard claimed the business had been restructured.""

I leaned forward.

"What does that mean?""

"It means the money didn't simply disappear into old debts. Some of it went into a private account.""

"Whose account?""

Evelyn slid the page toward us.

Monique Carter.

My mother's name appeared beside a transfer of $95,000.

I stared at her.

"You told us there wasn't enough money for groceries.""

She started crying.

"That money wasn't mine.""

"Your name is on the account!""

"Richard told me it was temporary. He said he was protecting the funds.""

"Then why didn't you use it to pay the bills?""

She covered her face.

"I was going to.""

"When?""

She didn't answer.

Marcus sat beside me.

"Mom, why did you tell me we couldn't afford my school trip?""

Monique looked at him.

"Marcus...""

"You said I was selfish for asking.""

She reached toward him.

He moved away.

That small movement seemed to hurt her more than anything I'd said.

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered the auditorium.

The torn stole.

The way she'd screamed that I didn't deserve my achievement.

The way she'd destroyed my scholarship without blinking.

"Why did you cancel my scholarship?"" I asked.

Monique looked at me.

"Because Richard needed the money.""

"How much?""

"Forty-eight thousand.""

"Why?""

She hesitated.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

"Because he said if I didn't pay him, he would expose everything.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"So you sacrificed my education to protect yourself?""

"I thought you could go somewhere cheaper.""

"Westbridge gave me a full ride!""

"I didn't want you leaving!""

"Why?""

Her voice broke.

"Because I knew once you went away, I would lose you.""

I stared at her.

"You didn't lose me because I went to college, Mom. You lost me when you decided my future belonged to you.""

She began sobbing.

But Evelyn interrupted.

"There's still one issue we haven't addressed.""

She opened the black binder.

"The company ownership transfer.""

I turned toward her.

"Isn't it already mine?""

"Your father's original trust says it should be. But someone submitted a competing ownership claim three months ago.""

"Who?""

Evelyn looked at Monique.

"Your mother.""

I felt the room spin.

Monique stood.

"Arthur promised me the company!""

"Do you have proof?"" Evelyn asked.

"I was his wife!""

"Marriage does not automatically transfer ownership of a separately protected trust asset.""

My mother slammed her hand against the table.

"You have no idea what I sacrificed for that man!""

Evelyn calmly removed a document.

"Actually, I believe this is exactly what we need to discuss.""

It was a notarized amendment.

Dated six weeks before my father's death.

The document explicitly stated that Monique had no ownership rights in Carter Family Holdings and that the children were the sole beneficiaries.

My mother's face drained of color.

"That's not real.""

Evelyn placed the original beside it.

"Your husband signed this in my presence. Two witnesses confirmed it. The original has been preserved.""

Monique stared at the page.

Then she looked at me.

"He was going to leave me with nothing.""

I shook my head.

"He left you a home. He left you two children. He left you a chance to do the right thing.""

She laughed through her tears.

"You sound just like him.""

I didn't answer.

Evelyn gathered the documents.

"For now, the company assets will remain frozen while the financial investigation proceeds. Zarya, you'll need to decide whether you wish to assume control once the transfer is verified.""

I looked at Marcus.

"What happens to him?""

"His name will be removed from any unauthorized guarantees. We'll also seek formal confirmation that the documents bearing his signature are invalid.""

Marcus exhaled.

For the first time in days, his shoulders relaxed.

Then Evelyn's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and frowned.

"What do you mean the original recording has surfaced?""

I looked at her.

"What recording?""

Evelyn covered the microphone.

"An audio recording from your father's final week. It was apparently submitted to the company's former accountant.""

"What's on it?""

She listened for several more seconds.

Then she ended the call.

"Zarya, there's something your father said that changes how we understand these transactions.""

"What?""

Evelyn looked toward Monique.

"Your father didn't just discover Richard was stealing money.""

She lowered her voice.

"He discovered that someone inside the family was helping him.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Who?""

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened her laptop and played the recording.

My father's voice came through the speakers, weaker than I remembered.

"Richard, I know Monique has been signing the transfers. I know you've been using her authorization.""

Then another voice answered.

A woman's voice.

My mother's.

"Arthur, please. You don't understand. I was trying to help.""

My father spoke again.

"Then tell me why you put our daughter's name on the account.""

The recording ended.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

But she wasn't denying it.

"Mom," I whispered.

"What account?""

She pressed both hands against her face.

Then she said:

"The account wasn't created for the company.""

My stomach twisted.

"What was it created for?""

May you like

She looked at me.

"It was created to hide money from your father.""
