Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Inside My Father's Desk

I reached home twenty minutes later.

My mother was standing in the backyard beside a metal trash barrel.

Smoke curled into the afternoon air.

She held a stack of papers in one hand.

One by one, she dropped them into the flames.

"Mom!""

She spun around.

For half a second, her expression revealed genuine panic.

Then she covered it with anger.

"What are you doing here?""

I hurried toward the barrel.

"What are you burning?""

"Old paperwork.""

"Those are Dad's documents!""

"Your father is dead, Zarya. Those papers are useless.""

I reached for the stack in her hand.

She pulled it away.

"Don't touch me!""

Marcus appeared in the back doorway.

His face was pale.

"Mom, stop.""

Monique turned toward him.

"Go inside.""

"No.""

She stepped closer.

"Marcus, I said go inside.""

He looked at me.

Then he said quietly, "I know where the other envelope is.""

My mother froze.

"What envelope?""

Marcus swallowed.

"The one Dad told me about.""

For the first time since the graduation ceremony, Monique looked genuinely terrified.

"Marcus," she said slowly, "what exactly did your father tell you?""

Marcus backed away.

"He said if anything happened to Zarya's education money, I should give it to her.""

My mother dropped the remaining papers.

I stared at my brother.

"Where is it?""

He pointed toward the garage.

"Inside Dad's old toolbox.""

Monique moved immediately.

"Nobody is going anywhere near that toolbox!""

But Marcus was already running.

I followed him through the back door and into the garage.

The air smelled of gasoline, dust, and old wood.

Dad's toolbox sat beneath a shelf near the workbench.

It was a heavy red metal box with a broken latch.

Marcus knelt beside it.

"I saw him put something inside before he went to the hospital.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He looked down.

"Mom said Dad didn't want us talking about money.""

I crouched beside him.

"Marcus, you can tell me anything.""

He opened the toolbox.

Inside were old screwdrivers, rusted nails, a measuring tape, and a small envelope taped beneath the upper compartment.

My name was written across it.

*For Zarya. Only if she needs the truth.*

My hands trembled as I removed it.

There was a key inside.

And a handwritten note.

Zarya,

If this reaches you, something has gone wrong.

I have arranged for the important documents to be kept somewhere safe. The key opens a private storage box at First National Bank. Your aunt Denise knows the location.

There is one thing I need you to remember.

Your mother may tell you that everything she does is for the family. Sometimes she may even believe it herself.

But love should never require you to surrender your future.

Trust Evelyn.

And ask her about the company.

I read the final sentence twice.

Ask her about the company.

Carter Family Holdings LLC?

Before I could think further, my mother appeared in the doorway.

"Give me that.""

I stood.

"No.""

"Zarya, you don't understand what you're doing.""

"Then explain it.""

She extended her hand.

"Give me the key.""

"Why? What is in that box?""

"Nothing that concerns you.""

I laughed in disbelief.

"Everything Dad left concerns me!""

Her eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell me the truth.

Instead, she pointed at Marcus.

"You. Go upstairs.""

He shook his head.

"Mom, I want to know too.""

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"Then tell us!""

Monique slapped the workbench.

"Your father made promises he couldn't keep!""

The words hung in the air.

I stared at her.

"What promises?""

She looked away.

"Promises about money. About businesses. About this family.""

"Did you take his insurance money?""

"I used what I needed.""

"Two hundred thousand dollars?""

She flinched.

"Do you know how expensive it was to keep this house?""

"Then why didn't you tell us?""

"Because I was protecting you!""

I held up the key.

"From what?""

She stepped closer.

"Your father was not the man you think he was.""

The sentence struck me like a slap.

"Don't.""

"He left debts. He made mistakes. He put this family in danger.""

"Then why did he leave us a trust?""

Monique said nothing.

I looked at her carefully.

"Mom, what is Carter Family Holdings?""

Her expression hardened.

"Who told you that name?""

"Answer me.""

She suddenly reached for the envelope.

I stepped back.

She grabbed my wrist.

"Listen to me, Zarya. You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

I pulled free.

"Then tell me!""

She looked at Marcus, then back at me.

Finally, she whispered:

"Your father didn't build that company for you.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He built it for the entire family. It was supposed to be our future.""

"Then why is my name on the trust?""

"Because he changed everything at the last minute.""

The garage went silent.

I stared at her.

"What did he change?""

She pressed her lips together.

Then she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"He gave you control of the company.""

I stopped breathing.

"Me?""

"Yes. You.""

"Why?""

"Because he thought you were the only one he could trust.""

I looked at Marcus.

He looked just as stunned.

My mother wiped her eyes angrily.

"Do you understand now? That company was supposed to support this family. Your father made me responsible for keeping it alive, and then he gave everything to you.""

I shook my head.

"You mean he gave me ownership?""

"He gave you something you were never supposed to have at eighteen.""

Before I could respond, a car horn sounded outside.

A black sedan had pulled into the driveway.

A man stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.

My mother immediately straightened her clothes.

"Mr. Whitmore," she called.

The attorney walked toward the garage.

He looked at me.

Then at the key in my hand.

His face changed.

"Where did you get that?""

I closed my fingers around it.

"From my father's toolbox.""

He took a slow breath.

"Monique, we need to speak privately.""

"No," I said.

"You can speak in front of me.""

Whitmore ignored me.

He turned to my mother.

"Did you tell her about the company?""

Monique shook her head.

"Not everything.""

The attorney closed his eyes.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Zarya, I strongly recommend that you put that key away and come to my office tomorrow.""

"Why?""

"Because if your father left you what I believe he left you, there are people who will be very interested in getting their hands on it.""

I tightened my grip.

"Who?""

Whitmore looked at my mother.

She whispered one name.

"Richard.""

May you like

The attorney's face went white.

And suddenly, I understood that my mother wasn't the only person afraid of what I might find.
