Chapter 8: The Man Who Ordered His Own Son's Death

Robert moved toward the door.
Caleb grabbed his arm.
His hands moved urgently.
*“Don't open it.””*
My father shook his head.
"He'll come in anyway.""
He looked at me.
"Hannah, take the evidence.""
I grabbed the metal box.
"Come with us.""
Robert smiled sadly.
"I'll hold him off.""
"No.""
"Hannah—"
"You're not dying in another hallway while I stand somewhere safe.""
Caleb stepped beside me.
His hands moved.
*“We leave together.””*
A sudden crash shook the door.
Thomas laughed from the other side.
"Robert, you really should have taught your children better manners.""
Another impact.
The doorframe splintered.
Robert pulled a small pistol from his waistband.
Then he looked at Caleb.
"There's a service exit behind the bathroom. It leads to the neighbor's garage.""
Caleb shook his head.
Robert pointed toward the metal box.
"That evidence is worth more than my life. Get it out.""
I wanted to argue.
But the door cracked open.
Thomas's men entered.
Robert fired once.
The first man fell backward.
Caleb grabbed my hand.
We ran through the bathroom.
Behind us, Robert shouted.
Then another gunshot rang out.
I nearly turned around.
Caleb held me tighter.
*“Hannah. Keep moving.””*
We escaped through the neighbor's garage and reached the street.
A dark SUV pulled up beside us.
Marcus was behind the wheel.
Blood stained his shirt, but he was alive.
I stared.
"How?""
He gave a weak smile.
"Apparently, I'm harder to kill than I look.""
Caleb rushed to the passenger door.
His hands moved.
*“Where is my mother?””*
Marcus's expression changed.
"Dominic took her.""
Caleb froze.
"When?""
"About twenty minutes ago. I got away before they could finish the job.""
He looked at the metal box.
"You found it?""
I nodded.
Marcus started the engine.
"Then we need to move. Thomas has already contacted the police.""
I looked at him.
"Can we trust the police?""
Marcus laughed without humor.
"Not the ones Thomas controls.""
He drove us to an old church in Pilsen.
The building had been closed for years. Dust covered the pews, and sunlight entered through cracked stained glass.
A woman waited near the altar.
Margaret.
She rushed toward Caleb.
He embraced her.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Caleb pulled back and signed.
*“Are you safe?””*
Margaret nodded.
"Marcus got me out.""
She looked at me.
"Did you find Ethan's evidence?""
I placed the box on a wooden bench.
"Yes.""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Thank God.""
We opened the first flash drive on Marcus's laptop.
Folders filled the screen.
Bank records.
Audio recordings.
Surveillance footage.
And a document titled:
*PROJECT HEIR.*
Caleb clicked it.
The first page contained a list of names.
At the top were Dominic Vale and Thomas Whitaker.
Beneath them were several politicians, police officials, and businessmen.
But the final name made me stop.
Robert Mercer.
I stared.
"Why is my father listed?""
Margaret approached.
"Because Robert helped create the project.""
Caleb turned toward her.
His hands moved.
*“What project?””*
Margaret took a breath.
"Thomas wanted complete control over Dominic's organization. He needed someone inside the family who could inherit the business without raising suspicion.""
Caleb's face hardened.
Margaret continued.
"Dominic believed you were his biological son. Thomas arranged your birth records. He wanted you positioned as the future head of the organization.""
I looked at the screen.
"So Caleb was part of a plan before he was even born?""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
Caleb signed.
*“Why would Thomas want me to inherit Dominic's criminal empire?””*
"Because he intended to control it through you.""
I looked at the next folder.
It contained photographs of Caleb as a child.
Then photographs of Dominic signing business contracts.
Then recordings of private conversations.
One file was labeled:
*CALEB — DEVELOPMENT RECORDINGS.*
I clicked it.
Dominic's voice filled the church.
"He's learning quickly. The boy is obedient. He understands that he owes me everything.""
Another voice answered.
Thomas.
"And when he discovers the truth?""
Dominic laughed.
"By then, he'll be too deep to leave.""
The recording continued.
"What about Margaret?""
"She won't be a problem.""
A pause.
Then Thomas asked, "And the Mercer boy?""
Dominic's voice became cold.
"He's already becoming one.""
I stopped the recording.
Caleb stared at the screen.
His hands moved.
*“They planned to kill Ethan because he discovered the project.””*
Margaret nodded.
"Your brother found the original files and realized that you were being groomed to take control of a criminal organization.""
I looked at Caleb.
"Did you know any of this?""
He shook his head.
*“I thought my father wanted me to inherit legitimate businesses. I never knew he was using me.””*
Marcus walked toward the church entrance.
"We need to make copies of everything.""
I inserted the second flash drive.
A new folder appeared.
It contained audio recordings from the night Ethan died.
My fingers hovered over the mouse.
I wasn't sure I could listen.
Caleb placed his hand over mine.
*“Together.””*
I clicked.
At first, there was only static.
Then Ethan's voice.
"Please. I gave you the files. Just let me go.""
A man's voice answered.
Dominic.
"You're making this difficult, kid.""
"I didn't tell anyone about Caleb. I swear.""
"That's the problem. You know too much.""
Then another voice entered.
Thomas.
"Dominic, don't shoot him here.""
Dominic laughed.
"Relax. I know what I'm doing.""
A door slammed.
Footsteps.
Then Ethan whispered something.
"Caleb?""
I began crying.
The recording continued.
"If you ever hear this, tell Hannah I love her.""
There was a struggle.
A crash.
Then Thomas spoke.
"Do it.""
A gunshot.
Silence.
I covered my mouth.
Caleb's hands shook uncontrollably.
Then another voice spoke.
A voice I hadn't heard before.
"Wait. He's still breathing.""
Thomas answered.
"Then finish it.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
For six years, I'd imagined my brother's final moments.
Now I knew.
He had been alive after the first gunshot.
Someone had ordered a second.
I turned toward Margaret.
"Who recorded this?""
She pointed to a small timestamp in the corner.
"Dominic's private security system.""
Marcus leaned closer.
"There's another file.""
He opened it.
The video showed a warehouse office.
Dominic sat behind a desk.
Thomas stood near the window.
A third person entered.
My mother.
She placed a document on the desk.
Then she spoke.
"I did what you asked. The girl has no idea about the twins.""
Thomas nodded.
"Good.""
My mother's voice trembled.
"And Ethan?""
Dominic looked up.
"He's dead.""
The video stopped.
I stared at the frozen screen.
My mother had known.
She had known Ethan was murdered.
She had known Caleb was my brother.
And she had helped conceal the truth.
I slowly turned toward Margaret.
"Where is my mother?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Marcus checked his phone.
Then his expression changed.
"Hannah, we have a problem.""
He turned the screen toward me.
A live news broadcast showed Thomas Whitaker standing outside Chicago Police Headquarters.
Behind him were several officers.
A reporter held a microphone.
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
Then he announced:
"An armed criminal fugitive named Caleb Vale has kidnapped Hannah Mercer and stolen classified police evidence. We are asking the public to help locate them.""
My stomach dropped.
He wasn't just hunting us anymore.
He was making the entire city hunt us.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
Hannah, it's Mom.
I know you have the recordings.
If you want to know why Ethan really died, meet me alone at Bellamy's Steakhouse at midnight.
May you like
A second message followed.
Come without Caleb. The truth about your brother is worse than you think.
