Chapter 6: The Price of Protecting a Brother

Nobody moved.
Dominic stood at the bottom of the staircase with his gun aimed at Caleb's chest.
Margaret stepped forward.
"Dominic, please.""
He didn't look at her.
"Get out of the way.""
"He's your son.""
Dominic laughed.
"No. He's Robert's mistake.""
Caleb's expression didn't change.
His hands moved slowly.
*“You raised me.””*
Dominic glanced at him.
"Unfortunately.""
*“You taught me how to read contracts. How to negotiate. How to recognize a lie.””*
Caleb paused.
Then he signed something that made Dominic's smile disappear.
*“You never taught me how to love.””*
For a moment, the entire room was silent.
Then Dominic raised his gun.
Robert stepped between them.
"Dominic, don't.""
Dominic looked almost amused.
"Move, Robert.""
"No.""
"You're going to die protecting a boy who isn't yours?""
Robert's voice cracked.
"He's my son.""
Dominic's face twisted.
"Then perhaps you should have acted like a father twenty-seven years ago.""
I saw Marcus moving near the entrance.
He had managed to slip inside without being noticed.
His hand rested beneath his jacket.
But Dominic's attention shifted toward me.
"Miss Mercer.""
I stared at him.
"Remember me?""
"Of course. The waitress who thought she could teach my son manners.""
He smiled.
"I've been thinking about you.""
"That's unfortunate.""
One of his guards stepped forward.
Dominic raised a hand.
"Careful, Hannah. You're standing in a house with people who have buried much more dangerous individuals than you.""
I glanced at Caleb.
His hands were moving behind his back.
*“Stay close.””*
Dominic noticed.
"Stop signing.""
Caleb continued.
Dominic's voice sharpened.
"I said stop.""
He stepped forward and struck Caleb across the face with the back of his hand.
I screamed.
Caleb stumbled against the table.
Margaret rushed toward him.
Dominic shoved her aside.
"Enough!""
Marcus moved.
A gunshot exploded.
The chandelier above us shattered.
Everyone dropped.
I hit the floor beside Caleb.
"Are you okay?""
He nodded, pressing one hand against his cheek.
Marcus had drawn his weapon.
One of Dominic's guards was on the floor, clutching his shoulder.
Robert grabbed my arm.
"Kitchen! Now!""
We ran.
Behind us, furniture crashed and men shouted.
I heard Margaret calling Caleb's name.
Then another gunshot.
Caleb stopped.
I grabbed his wrist.
"Don't!""
His eyes were fixed on the hallway.
*“My mother.””*
"Marcus will get her.""
Caleb shook his head.
He turned back.
I followed him.
We found Margaret beside the dining room table. Blood stained her sleeve, and a broken glass lay near her hand.
Caleb dropped beside her.
His hands moved frantically.
*“Where are you hurt?””*
Margaret touched his face.
"Just my arm.""
Caleb looked at the wound.
It was shallow, but blood was running down her wrist.
He took a napkin and pressed it against the cut.
I crouched beside them.
"We need to leave.""
Margaret shook her head.
"Not without the key.""
"What key?""
She looked at Caleb.
"The one your brother hid.""
Caleb froze.
His hands moved.
*“What are you talking about?””*
Margaret reached into the pocket of her dress and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Ethan.
On the back were three handwritten words.
The blue room.
I recognized the location immediately.
My father's old family home.
The house where I'd spent every summer with Ethan.
It had been sold after my father's death.
"What's in the blue room?"" I asked.
Margaret looked at me.
"The original records. Everything Dominic has spent twenty years trying to destroy.""
Caleb's eyes widened.
*“Ethan hid the files there?””*
Margaret nodded.
"He told me he had made a copy. He said if anything happened to him, his sister would know where to look.""
I stared at the photograph.
Ethan had never mentioned a blue room.
But I remembered the house.
The second-floor bedroom had blue wallpaper. Ethan used to hide his favorite comic books behind a loose wooden panel near the closet.
He'd called it his secret vault.
I looked at Caleb.
"We need to go.""
He nodded.
Then a voice came from behind us.
"Nobody is going anywhere.""
Dominic stood in the doorway.
His gun was pointed directly at Margaret.
Marcus appeared behind him, holding his own weapon.
"Put it down, Dominic.""
Dominic smiled.
"You've disappointed me, Marcus.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Your son trusted me.""
"Your son?""
Dominic glanced at Caleb.
"He's not my son.""
Marcus looked at Caleb.
Then he lowered his weapon slightly.
"Maybe not by blood. But he was the only person in this family who ever treated me like a human being.""
Dominic's smile vanished.
"You have ten seconds.""
Marcus didn't move.
Dominic fired.
Marcus collapsed against the wall.
"Marcus!"" Caleb rushed forward.
I grabbed him.
The security man fell to his knees, blood spreading across his shirt.
He looked at Caleb.
Then he forced himself to raise one hand.
*“Go.””*
Caleb shook his head.
Marcus signed again, his fingers trembling.
*“Protect her.””*
Caleb's face crumpled.
He looked at me.
Then at the staircase.
I understood.
We ran through the kitchen.
Robert led us toward the garage, where a black sedan was parked.
My mother followed, carrying the envelope.
Margaret remained behind with Marcus.
I looked at her.
"Come with us!""
She shook her head.
"I need to finish what I started.""
Caleb signed desperately.
*“Mother, please.””*
Margaret touched his cheek.
"Your brother waited six years for the truth. Don't let him wait another day.""
Then she closed the door.
Robert started the car.
We sped away.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
I held the photograph of Ethan in my lap.
Caleb sat beside me, staring at the blood on his sleeve.
My father drove with both hands gripping the steering wheel.
Finally, I asked him the question I'd been avoiding.
"Did you kill Ethan?""
Robert's hands tightened.
"No.""
"Did you know Dominic was going to?""
He didn't answer.
I leaned forward.
"Look at me.""
Robert glanced at the rearview mirror.
His eyes were wet.
"I knew Dominic was looking for him. I knew Ethan had something he wanted.""
"And you didn't protect him.""
"I tried.""
"You signed the evidence transfer.""
Robert's voice broke.
"Because Dominic threatened your life.""
I went still.
"What?""
Robert pulled the car into an empty parking lot.
He turned around.
"Dominic told me that if I didn't surrender the drive, he'd kill you both. Ethan had already disappeared. I thought I could save you.""
I stared at him.
"You chose me?""
Robert nodded.
"I chose the child I could still protect.""
My chest tightened.
"You left my brother to die.""
"I know.""
Caleb looked down.
Then he signed something.
*“My mother told me Robert had been trying to expose Dominic for years. She said he had an insurance policy.””*
Robert closed his eyes.
"She shouldn't have told you that.""
I turned.
"What insurance policy?""
My father reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of a man standing beside Dominic.
The man wore a police uniform.
I recognized him from the evidence transfer.
Detective Robert Mercer had signed the documents.
But the man standing beside Dominic was someone else.
A senior Chicago police official.
Robert placed a second photograph beside it.
The same official was standing outside the hospital where Ethan's body had been taken.
On the back, my father had written:
The officer who changed the accident report.
I looked at the name.
Deputy Chief Thomas Whitaker.
Then Robert handed Caleb a small recording device.
"Your brother gave me this the night before he died.""
Caleb stared at it.
*“You had this for six years?””*
Robert nodded.
"I was waiting for the right moment.""
I felt anger rising again.
"There was no right moment. There was only six years of silence.""
Robert didn't argue.
Caleb turned on the device.
A familiar voice filled the car.
Ethan.
"Caleb, if you're hearing this, then something happened to me.""
I covered my mouth.
His voice continued.
"There's one thing I didn't tell you. Dominic isn't the only person who wants those files.""
A pause.
Then Ethan whispered something that made Caleb sit forward.
"Your biological father is alive.""
The recording crackled.
"And he's the man who ordered the accident.""
Caleb slowly turned toward Robert.
I stared at my father.
Robert's face had gone completely white.
Then the recording continued.
"His name is Thomas Whitaker.""
Silence filled the car.
Caleb's hands began moving.
*“That's impossible. Robert is my father.””*
My father looked at him through the mirror.
And for the first time that night, he didn't deny it.
Instead, he reached into the glove compartment and removed a final document.
A DNA test.
The result showed a biological relationship between Caleb Vale and Thomas Whitaker.
But beneath the result was a handwritten note.
Robert Mercer is not Caleb's father.
My father looked at both of us.
Then he whispered:
"There's something Ethan never knew.""
He paused.
"Caleb isn't the only child Thomas Whitaker had.""
He turned toward me.
"Hannah, your mother gave birth to twins.""
My breath stopped.
Robert pointed at Caleb.
"One of them was you.""
Then he looked at me.
"And the other was your brother Ethan.""
Caleb's face drained of color.
Because if the DNA results were real, the man who had ordered Ethan's murder wasn't just the officer who changed the accident report.
May you like
He was Caleb's biological father.
And somewhere in Chicago, Thomas Whitaker was still wearing his badge.
