Chapter 6: The Lie That Nearly Destroyed Him
Marcus stared at Peter.
For one terrible second, he could not understand what he had heard.
“You're the witness?”” Marcus asked.
Peter stood so quickly that his chair scraped backward.
“No. I didn't say that.””
The clerk looked between them.
“Mrs. Reed's attorney has submitted a written statement identifying Mr. Lawson as a witness to the alleged threat.””
Daniel stepped toward the door.
“Then the court needs to hear what Mr. Lawson actually witnessed, not what someone claims he witnessed.””
The clerk nodded and left.
Marcus turned back to Peter.
“Did you tell Vanessa I threatened her?””
“No.””
“Did you speak to her?””
“Not since I arrived.””
Marcus ran a hand through his hair.
“Then why would she use your name?””
Peter looked at the envelope on the table.
“Because she knows I have the records. If she can discredit me before I testify, she can make everything I brought here look like retaliation.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That's possible. But we need to be prepared for the possibility that she'll claim you and Marcus coordinated to manufacture evidence.””
Peter's shoulders sagged.
“She'll destroy my career.””
“Mr. Lawson,” Daniel said firmly, “you are not responsible for the allegations Mrs. Reed chooses to make. Your responsibility is to tell the truth and preserve your records.””
Peter stared at the floor.
“What if she has something on me?””
“Then you should discuss it with your own lawyer. We will not coach you on what to say, and we will not ask you to hide anything. But you must not let fear decide whether your testimony is truthful.””
A knock sounded at the door.
This time, it was the bailiff.
“Judge Williams is ready to hear the emergency motion.””
Daniel collected his briefcase.
“Marcus, say nothing to Vanessa unless I advise you otherwise. Peter, bring only the records your lawyer has authorized you to provide. We are going to address the allegation directly.””
Marcus touched the red heart on his cheek.
The marker had begun to fade around the edges.
He wished Ava were there.
He wished he could tell her that grown-ups were supposed to protect children, not turn them into weapons. He wished he could promise that the truth would make everything better immediately.
But he couldn't.
All he could do was walk back into the courtroom and refuse to become the angry man Vanessa wanted the judge to see.
When they entered, Vanessa was already seated at her table.
She had dabbed the corners of her eyes with a tissue. Her cream-colored suit remained immaculate, but her face had taken on the fragile, wounded expression she used whenever she wanted people to feel sorry for her.
Mr. Collins stood beside her.
“Your Honor,” he began, “during the recess, my client was approached by Mr. Reed, who confronted her about private financial matters. She felt threatened and feared the situation might escalate.””
Marcus gripped the back of his chair.
“That's a lie.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Marcus.””
He closed his mouth.
Judge Williams looked over his glasses.
“Mr. Collins, do you have a witness who can substantiate the allegation?””
“Yes, Your Honor. Mr. Peter Lawson was present during the interaction.””
Peter stepped forward.
“I was not present for any interaction between them.””
Vanessa turned toward him in disbelief.
“Peter, you were standing right there!””
“I was standing in the corridor with Marcus and Mr. Brooks. You were across the hall with your attorney. I did not witness Marcus threaten you.””
Mr. Collins immediately approached the bench.
“Your Honor, the witness appears confused about the sequence of events.””
“No,” Peter said.
“I'm not confused.””
The judge raised his hand.
“Mr. Lawson, you will speak only when addressed.””
Peter nodded and stepped back.
Judge Williams looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Reed, did Mr. Reed approach you during the recess?””
Vanessa dabbed her eyes.
“He was watching me. He was whispering to his attorney, and I could tell they were planning something. I felt intimidated.””
“Did he speak directly to you?””
She hesitated.
“He looked at me in a threatening way.””
“Did he threaten you verbally?””
“No, but—”
“Did he touch you?””
“No.””
“Did he block your movement or prevent you from leaving?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“No.””
Judge Williams set down his pen.
“Then I see no basis for the emergency restriction you are requesting. If you have evidence of threats, you may submit it through the appropriate process. The court will not impose restrictions based solely on a party's interpretation of another person's expression.””
Vanessa lowered her tissue.
For the first time, the wounded look disappeared.
“You can't just dismiss my concerns because he's charming you with a child's drawing.””
Marcus felt the insult land like a slap.
Daniel rose.
“Your Honor, my client has not asked the court to accept his innocence based on a drawing. We have asked that the allegations against him be examined alongside the evidence. Today, a document apparently containing instructions for preparing those allegations was produced by the child. We are requesting authentication and a full review.””
Mr. Collins objected.
“The document's origin is unverified.””
“Which is precisely why we are requesting authentication.””
Judge Williams nodded.
“Your point is understood. The court will consider the document's evidentiary value after appropriate examination. I will also note that Mr. Lawson has denied witnessing the alleged threat.””
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the tissue until it tore.
Daniel took his seat, then rose again.
“Your Honor, given the financial records introduced today and the possibility that the parties' financial interests overlap with the custody dispute, we request a short continuance before any final custody determination. We also request that the court preserve all relevant documents and consider an independent review of any trust or account affecting the child's financial interests.””
Judge Williams looked toward Mr. Collins.
“Your response?””
Mr. Collins straightened his jacket.
“We oppose any delay. The custody matter has already caused considerable emotional strain, and the child needs stability.””
Daniel answered calmly.
“Stability cannot mean ignoring credible questions about the integrity of the evidence.””
The judge considered both attorneys for a long moment.
“I will not make a final determination today. The court will issue appropriate directions regarding the preservation and production of relevant records. Any request for a forensic review must be properly supported. The parties will also refrain from discussing disputed evidence with the child or pressuring her to change her account.””
Marcus exhaled.
It wasn't victory.
But it was the first time in months that the court had refused to treat Vanessa's allegations as unquestionable truth.
Then Judge Williams turned to Vanessa.
“One final question, Mrs. Reed. Did you have access to the financial records of Reed Development during your marriage?””
Vanessa sat straighter.
“I occasionally helped with household paperwork.””
“That was not my question.””
She glanced at Mr. Collins.
“I had limited access to certain records.””
“Did you have access to records concerning the properties held by Mr. Reed's late father's estate?””
Vanessa's face became still.
“I don't recall.””
Peter spoke before he could stop himself.
“You signed the transfer instructions.””
The courtroom fell silent.
Vanessa whipped around.
“That's a lie!””
Peter looked at the judge.
“I can provide the records through the proper legal process. I am not asking the court to accept my word today.””
Judge Williams nodded.
“Then do so.””
Vanessa stood.
“Your Honor, I have been subjected to months of harassment. Now my former husband's accountant is conspiring with him to accuse me of financial crimes because I want to protect my daughter.””
Marcus felt anger surge through him.
“You told me those accounts were closed!””
“Mr. Reed,” the judge warned.
Marcus forced himself to sit.
Vanessa pointed toward him.
“Look at him! This is exactly what I've been saying. He's volatile. He can't control himself.””
But something had changed.
The judge did not immediately look at Marcus.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Reed, you have made repeated allegations of intimidation while interrupting proceedings, raising your voice, and attempting to speak over the court. I advise you to allow your attorney to represent you.””
Vanessa slowly lowered her hand.
Daniel leaned toward Marcus.
“That's enough for today. Don't mistake a procedural decision for a final outcome. We still need the records.””
The judge adjourned the hearing.
As people began leaving, Vanessa hurried toward the side door. Mr. Collins followed her, speaking in a low voice.
Marcus stayed beside Daniel while Peter gathered the documents.
Then the court-appointed child advocate returned with Ava.
The little girl ran toward her father, stopped just short of him, and looked up at his face.
“The heart is getting blurry,” she said sadly.
Marcus knelt.
“That's okay. Hearts don't have to stay on your cheek to be real.””
Ava wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Did the judge believe me?””
Marcus held her carefully.
“He listened to you, sweetheart.””
“Is Mommy angry?””
Marcus glanced at the doorway Vanessa had used.
“I think she's having a difficult day.””
Ava studied him.
“Daddy, I didn't tell you everything.””
His smile faded.
“What do you mean?””
Ava reached into the small pocket of her dress and pulled out a tiny brass key.
“I took this too,” she whispered.
“It was taped under the drawer. Mommy said nobody was allowed to touch it.””
Marcus stared at the key.
Daniel crouched beside them.
“Do you know what it opens, Ava?””
She shook her head.
“No. But I heard Mommy tell someone that if the paper ever got out, they had to destroy what was inside the blue box.””
Peter dropped the ledger.
The sound cracked through the nearly empty courtroom.
Marcus turned toward him.
“Peter?””
Peter's face had gone ghostly white.
He stared at the brass key as if it were something dangerous.
Then he whispered five words.
“That's not your mother's key.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
Peter swallowed hard and looked toward the closed courtroom doors.
“It's the key to your father's safe-deposit box.””
Ava gripped her father's hand.
“Daddy, there's one more thing.””
Marcus looked down at her.
“What is it, baby?””
She leaned close to his ear.
“Mommy told someone on the phone that Grandpa's letter was still inside.””
Peter shut his eyes.
May you like
Because if the original letter was still in that box, it could establish who truly owned the hidden account—and reveal why Vanessa had been so desperate to keep Marcus away from the truth.
And somewhere outside the courtroom, Vanessa was already making another call.
