Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The gunshot shattered the silence.

Danielle screamed.

I grabbed her and pulled her behind the concrete corner of the storage building as another shot struck the metal door beside us.

Richard tackled Thomas to the ground.

“Get down!”” he shouted.

The gunmen scattered toward the parked vehicles.

For several seconds, the air filled with shouting, the pounding of footsteps, and the metallic clatter of bullets striking the storage doors.

Then a black pickup truck burst through the facility's exit gate.

Its headlights swept across the lot.

The driver slammed on the brakes beside us.

“Get in!”” a familiar voice shouted.

Daniel Price leaned across the passenger seat, his face bruised and his shirt stained with blood.

I stared at him.

“Daniel?””

“Unless you want to explain to the police why we're standing in a shooting gallery, get in the truck!””

We scrambled inside.

Thomas climbed into the back. Richard took the passenger seat, while Danielle and I squeezed into the rear.

Daniel slammed the accelerator.

The pickup fishtailed across the wet road, leaving the storage facility behind as the gunmen's vehicles roared after us.

I grabbed the headrest.

“Where the hell did you come from?””

“Long story.””

“You were being held hostage!””

“I escaped.””

“You called me from a locked room!””

“Technically, it wasn't locked.””

I stared at him.

Daniel glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

“Marcus, I promise I'll explain everything. But first, we need to get somewhere safe.””

A dark SUV appeared behind us.

Richard twisted in his seat.

“They're gaining on us.””

Daniel checked the mirror.

“Hold on.””

He swerved onto a narrow side road, sending the truck bouncing over potholes. The SUV followed, its headlights glaring through the rear window.

Thomas leaned forward.

“Daniel, where are you taking us?””

“To a place Brianna doesn't know about.””

“You expect us to believe that?””

“No,” Daniel snapped.

“I expect you to stay alive long enough to find out.””

The SUV accelerated.

A second vehicle appeared behind it.

I looked at Richard.

“Are those your men?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who are they?””

He didn't answer.

The road narrowed between two rows of warehouses. Daniel cut sharply into an alley, drove behind a loading dock, and stopped beside a rusted metal gate.

“Out,” he ordered.

We climbed from the truck.

Daniel punched a code into a keypad.

The gate opened.

We hurried inside a disused industrial building, where a single fluorescent light flickered above a dusty workbench.

Daniel locked the door behind us and leaned against it, breathing hard.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I grabbed his shirt.

“Tell me the truth.””

He raised his hands.

“I will.””

“Were you working with Brianna?””

His eyes dropped.

That was enough to make my stomach turn.

“How long?””

“Marcus—”

“How long?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Before your father died.””

I released him.

Danielle covered her mouth.

Thomas muttered something under his breath.

I stepped away, struggling to understand how another person I trusted could have been involved in the same nightmare.

“You helped her steal from my father?””

“I helped her move money. I didn't know the full extent of the fraud at first.””

“That's what everyone says.””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I was twenty-eight. I had a wife, a newborn daughter, and a mountain of debt. Brianna offered me money to alter a few accounting entries. She told me it was a temporary arrangement involving investors who didn't want their names disclosed.””

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to believe her.””

“Then what happened?””

Daniel looked toward Richard.

“He told me.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Be careful, Daniel.””

“No.”” Daniel straightened.

“I'm done protecting you.””

He turned back to me.

“Richard was the one who introduced Brianna to your father's business. He provided the investors and the legal contacts. But when Robert discovered the scheme, Richard panicked.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I did not order Robert's death.””

“You didn't have to,” Daniel replied.

“You gave Brianna the contractor's name. You knew what she was capable of.””

Richard stood abruptly.

“You have no proof of that.””

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small memory card.

“I have the original call recording.””

Richard went silent.

I stared at the card.

“What's on it?””

“The call between Richard and Brianna the night before your father died.””

Richard moved toward Daniel.

“Give me that.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

“Daniel, you don't understand what that recording could do.””

“I understand exactly what it could do. That's why I kept it.””

Richard looked at me.

“Marcus, this man has been manipulating everyone. He's trying to save himself.””

I studied Daniel's bruised face.

“Then let's hear it.””

Daniel placed the memory card into a small adapter connected to his laptop.

The recording began with static.

Then Brianna's voice emerged.

“Robert has the original ledgers. He says he's taking everything to the authorities tomorrow.””

Richard answered, “Then convince him to wait.””

“I tried. He won't listen.””

A pause.

Then Richard said, “You know what happens if those records become public. The investors will abandon us. The properties will be seized. Everything will collapse.””

Brianna's voice grew colder.

“Then we make sure he can't deliver them.””

There was a long silence.

Finally, Richard spoke.

“Do whatever you need to do. Just don't let this lead back to me.””

The recording ended.

I felt sick.

Richard stood motionless.

Thomas stared at him with undisguised contempt.

“You gave her permission.””

“I never told her to kill him!””

“But you knew what she meant.””

Richard turned toward me.

“Marcus, I made a terrible mistake. I was trying to protect the business.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

He didn't answer.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why didn't you take this to the police six years ago?””

Daniel's shoulders sagged.

“Because Brianna had the same recording. She told me if I went to the authorities, she'd destroy my family. She knew where my wife worked, where my daughter went to school, and which bank held our mortgage.””

He wiped his face.

“I kept quiet. I told myself I was protecting them. But every year, the lies got worse. Eventually, I was as trapped as everyone else.””

“Why did you call me tonight?””

“Because Brianna discovered I had the original memory card. She sent men to take it from me. I escaped, but she knew I'd contact you.””

I looked at the card.

“Does she know we have it?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knows.””

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Then Danielle spoke.

“There's something else we need to consider. Brianna threatened my mother, and now she's threatening Marcus's company. She won't stop just because we have a recording.””

Thomas nodded.

“We need the original ledgers and the contractor's testimony.””

Richard exhaled.

“The contractor is dead.””

I turned toward him.

“How do you know?””

“Because I paid him to disappear after Robert's death. Three months later, I received word that he'd been found dead in another state.””

Thomas frowned.

“Who gave you that information?””

Richard hesitated.

“Brianna.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Then you should know better than to believe it.””

Richard stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“Brianna told me the same thing about the contractor. But last week, I found a payment to a man using a different name. The money came from one of Northbridge's accounts.””

He opened a spreadsheet on his laptop.

A list of transactions filled the screen.

One payment stood out.

The recipient was listed as *Ethan Cole*.

I looked at Richard.

“Is he related to you?””

Richard's face lost its color.

“Ethan is my younger brother.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“I thought he left the country years ago.””

“He did,” Richard said quietly.

“Or so I believed.””

Daniel clicked another file.

A scanned photograph appeared.

It showed a man standing outside a roadside garage, his face partially obscured by a baseball cap.

Underneath was a note.

Ethan Cole. Private security contractor. Last known address: Mercer Road.

I stared at the screen.

“If Ethan sabotaged Dad's car, he may still be alive.””

Richard slowly shook his head.

“Ethan wouldn't do this.””

“You just told me he was dead.””

“I told you what I believed.””

“Then let's find out.””

Richard looked at the photograph for a long moment.

Finally, he nodded.

“Mercer Road is forty miles from here. There's an abandoned repair shop where Ethan used to work.””

Daniel closed his laptop.

“Then we go now.””

Before anyone could move, Danielle's phone buzzed.

She looked down at the screen.

A message from an unknown number.

She opened it.

Her face went white.

“Marcus…”

I took the phone.

The message contained a photograph of my mother sitting in her living room.

A man stood behind her, one hand resting on the back of her chair.

Beneath the photograph were seven words.

*Bring the memory card. Come alone.*

Another message arrived.

*You have one hour, or Evelyn dies.*

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Richard.

The recording had exposed a conspiracy, but it hadn't given us control.

Brianna still had my mother.

And she knew exactly how to make me surrender everything.

I took the phone and typed a reply.

*Where?*

The response came immediately.

*The old Williams estate. Midnight.*

My breath caught.

The Williams estate was the abandoned property my father had purchased shortly before his death. I'd visited it only once as a child. The house had been empty for years, and its grounds were surrounded by thick woods.

I looked at Richard.

“Why would Brianna choose that place?””

His face had turned ashen.

“Because that's where your father hid the original evidence before he died.””

Thomas stared at him.

“You told me Robert kept everything in the storage unit.””

“He kept copies there.””

Richard looked at me.

“The original records were hidden at the estate. I thought Brianna had found them years ago.””

“And if she has?””

Richard swallowed.

“Then she doesn't need us anymore.””

I checked the time.

11:07 p.m.

Less than an hour remained.

I slipped the memory card into my pocket.

“I'm going to get my mother.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You can't go alone.””

“That's exactly what she demanded.””

“And if she kills you?””

I looked at him.

“Then at least I won't spend the rest of my life wondering whether I could have saved her.””

Danielle stepped forward.

“Marcus, I'm coming with you.””

“No.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You don't get to decide that for me.””

“I'm not risking your life.””

“You've spent the last six years being kept in the dark because everyone decided they knew what was best for you. Don't make the same mistake with me.””

I stared at her.

She was right.

I reached for her hand.

“Stay close. Whatever happens, don't let Brianna separate us.””

She nodded.

Then Richard placed a small object in my palm.

A brass key.

“What is this?””

“The back entrance to the estate. Your father gave it to me before he died.””

I closed my fingers around it.

For the first time, Richard looked directly at me without trying to defend himself.

“Marcus, I can't undo what I've done. But I can help you stop Brianna.””

I looked at the man whose blood I shared.

“You'll get your chance.””

Then we headed toward the old Williams estate, carrying the only evidence that could destroy the conspiracy.

None of us noticed the small tracking device Daniel had left inside the pickup truck.

Or the text message it transmitted as we drove away.

*They're on their way. Bring the girl.*
