Chapter 7: The Father Who Came Back from the Dead

“It's time you met your real father.””

The voice came from the darkness beyond the storage unit.

I stood motionless, the digital recorder clenched in my hand. Beside me, Danielle gripped my arm so tightly that her fingernails dug into my skin.

Thomas Reed moved toward the doorway, then stopped when a tall man stepped beneath the fluorescent light.

He wore a charcoal overcoat, polished black shoes, and a silver watch that caught the light as he adjusted his cuffs. His dark hair was streaked with gray, and a thin scar ran from his left temple toward his cheekbone.

He looked to be in his late fifties.

And he had my eyes.

The same deep-set brown eyes I'd seen every morning in the mirror.

The same small crease between the eyebrows that appeared whenever I was angry.

I felt my knees weaken.

“No,” I whispered.

The man gave me a sad smile.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I backed away.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Richard Cole.””

Thomas swore under his breath.

I turned toward him.

“You know him?””

Thomas's expression was grim.

“Everyone who worked in commercial property development twenty years ago knew Richard Cole.””

Richard stepped into the unit without asking permission.

He glanced at the filing cabinet, the scattered papers, and the photograph in my hand.

“So Robert finally left you the truth.””

I stared at him.

“You're saying you're my father?””

Richard removed a folded document from his coat.

“Your mother and I were together long before Robert married her. We were young, ambitious, and foolish. When she became pregnant, I was offered an opportunity that would have taken me overseas for several years.””

He placed the document on the cabinet.

“I chose my career.””

“You abandoned her?””

“I made a terrible decision.””

“You abandoned your child.””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

The admission came without excuse.

For one moment, I almost respected him for it.

Then I remembered Daniel's words.

Your biological father is alive. And he's the one who ordered Robert's death.

I stepped forward.

“Did you kill Robert Williams?””

Richard's expression changed.

“Your father was a good man.””

“That's not an answer.””

“No,” he said.

“It isn't.””

Thomas moved between us.

“Marcus, don't listen to him. Richard didn't come here to confess. He came to retrieve those records.””

Richard sighed.

“Thomas, you have spent six years turning a manageable situation into a catastrophe.””

“You mean covering up murder?””

“I mean preventing innocent people from being dragged into a criminal investigation they don't understand.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Robert is dead because of people like you.””

Richard's eyes hardened.

“Robert is dead because he refused to understand the consequences of his decisions.””

I lunged toward him.

Danielle caught my arm.

“Marcus, wait!””

Richard didn't flinch.

Instead, he reached into his coat again and produced a photograph.

It showed my mother standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby.

Me.

Beside her stood Robert, smiling down at the child in her arms.

On the back, someone had written a date and a name.

Richard Cole. Biological father.

“Robert knew about me from the beginning,” Richard said.

“He knew I was your biological father, and he chose to raise you anyway.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Why?””

“Because he loved Evelyn. And because he loved you.””

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

“Because he believed the truth would hurt you more than it helped you.””

I shook my head.

“Don't pretend you know what he believed.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Fair enough.””

He looked at the digital recorder in my hand.

“But I do know what he discovered before he died. And I know why he was willing to risk everything to expose it.””

I lifted my chin.

“Tell me.””

Richard glanced at Thomas.

“Your father discovered that Northbridge Capital wasn't simply a shell company used to steal money. It was a vehicle for transferring ownership of valuable properties to a private group of investors.””

“And you were one of them.””

“Yes.””

The answer came so easily that I felt sick.

Richard continued.

“Robert discovered that several properties had been transferred using forged documents. Some of those properties belonged to people who had died. Others belonged to families who had no idea their signatures had been copied.””

“You stole from them.””

“I participated in a business arrangement that became criminal.””

“You stole from them,” I repeated.

His mouth tightened.

“Yes.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Tell him who created Northbridge.””

Richard looked at him.

“Does it matter?””

“Tell him.””

Richard exhaled.

“I established the company. Brianna handled the transactions. Several lawyers and accountants helped move the money. Robert discovered the scheme and threatened to expose everyone involved.””

“And you had him killed.””

Richard's silence lasted too long.

Then he said, “I did not order anyone to kill Robert.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel said you did.””

“Daniel is frightened. He's also been lying to you.””

“Why should I believe you?””

“You shouldn't.””

The answer surprised me.

Richard looked directly at me.

“You should believe evidence. That's why I'm here.””

He reached into his pocket and placed a small envelope on the cabinet.

“Inside is a copy of a payment authorization issued two days before Robert's accident. It shows a transfer to a private security contractor hired by Brianna.””

Thomas snatched the envelope.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked up.

“This proves Brianna paid someone to interfere with Robert's car.””

Richard nodded.

“It proves she hired the contractor. Whether she instructed him to sabotage the brakes is another question.””

I stepped toward him.

“Why bring this to me now?””

“Because Brianna has gone too far. She was supposed to secure the company assets and recover the records. Instead, she's holding Daniel hostage and threatening your family.””

“You helped her do all of this.””

“Yes.””

He looked down briefly.

“And I intend to stop her.””

I laughed without humor.

“By giving me one piece of paper and expecting me to trust you?””

“No. By giving you the entire financial trail.””

Richard placed a second envelope beside the first.

“Account numbers, transfer records, names of investors, and copies of communications between Brianna and the people who financed the scheme.””

Thomas stared at him.

“You kept all of that?””

“I kept enough to protect myself.””

“Of course you did.””

Richard ignored him.

“Marcus, I don't expect forgiveness. I abandoned you before you were born, and later I helped build a business that harmed innocent people. But I can still give you the evidence you need to dismantle it.””

I looked at the envelopes.

Then at the man standing before me.

He was my biological father.

The person whose blood ran through my veins.

And possibly the reason the man who raised me was dead.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted him to disappear.

Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.

“Who ordered the brakes to be sabotaged?””

Richard's expression grew serious.

“I don't know for certain.””

“Then find out.””

“I've spent six years trying.””

“Then you've been looking in the wrong place.””

I turned to Thomas.

“Where's Daniel?””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Richard's people located him two days ago. We believe Brianna moved him to an abandoned commercial property near the river.””

Richard nodded.

“I can take you there.””

I studied him.

“And why would you help me rescue the man who can expose you?””

“Because if Daniel dies, Brianna will destroy every remaining piece of evidence and disappear. Then neither of us will ever know who ordered Robert's death.””

It was a selfish answer.

But at least it was honest.

I picked up the envelopes and slid them into my jacket.

“We're going to find Daniel.””

Richard nodded.

Thomas gathered the remaining records while Danielle helped me secure the cabinet.

As we left the storage unit, I noticed a black sedan parked across the lot.

Its headlights were off.

A figure sat behind the wheel.

Watching us.

I stopped.

“Richard, do you recognize that car?””

He turned toward it.

The driver's window lowered.

A hand appeared, holding a phone.

Then a woman's voice came through the small external speaker.

“Marcus, I hope you enjoyed meeting your new daddy.””

Brianna.

Richard swore.

The car engine roared to life.

Before we could move, the sedan sped toward the exit.

A second vehicle emerged from behind the storage building, blocking our path.

Two men jumped out.

One raised a pistol.

The other pointed toward Richard.

“Mr. Cole,” he shouted.

“Brianna says you have something that belongs to her.””

Richard slowly raised his hands.

I felt Danielle's fingers close around mine.

Then the armed man smiled.

“And she says if you don't hand it over, we should kill your son first.””

I looked at Richard.

For the first time since meeting him, he looked genuinely terrified.

Not for himself.

For me.

“Marcus,” he whispered, “when I tell you to run, don't look back.””

May you like

The gunman raised his weapon.

And somewhere behind us, another shot rang out.
