Chapter 7: The Baby Who Disappeared

Emily couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Two tiny faces turned toward the same camera. One wore a yellow hospital bracelet. The other wore a white one.

On the back, in handwriting she recognized as her mother's, were the words:

Two daughters. One mother. One secret.

Emily placed the photograph on the dining table.

“Victoria, tell me what happened.””

Victoria remained standing near the kitchen doorway. Her hands trembled as she held the back of a chair.

“I didn't know everything,” she whispered.

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Victoria swallowed.

“Denise gave birth to twins.””

Emily stared at her.

“Twins?””

“Yes. Two girls. You were born first. Your sister came eleven minutes later.””

Emily felt the room spin.

“My sister?””

Victoria nodded.

“Jonathan was overjoyed. He called me from the hospital and said he had two beautiful daughters. He sounded like the happiest man in the world.””

“Then why was only one baby registered?””

“Because Denise insisted the second child had died.””

Emily looked down at the photograph.

“But she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

Victoria looked away.

“I don't know.””

Emily slammed her palm against the table.

“Everyone keeps telling me what happened twenty-six years ago, but nobody seems to know anything! My mother knew. My father knew.

Denise knew. You knew there were two babies. How did an entire person disappear?””

Victoria flinched.

“Because someone paid to make her disappear.””

Rachel stood beside Emily.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at the envelope.

“Arthur Whitmore.””

Emily sat down.

“Your father?””

“He believed two children would complicate Jonathan's inheritance. He also believed Denise would become difficult to control if she had two daughters.””

“That's insane.””

“Arthur was a powerful man. He had friends in hospitals, law firms, and local government. He could make paperwork disappear.””

Emily picked up the photograph again.

“Which baby was I?””

Victoria pointed to the yellow bracelet.

“You.””

“And the other one?””

“The white bracelet belonged to your sister.””

Emily's eyes filled.

“Did Mom know?””

Victoria nodded.

“Margaret knew both babies existed. She had been at the hospital that morning. She saw the second child being taken away.””

“Why didn't she stop them?””

“She tried.””

Victoria walked to the cabinet and removed a small notebook.

“This belonged to Jonathan. He wrote down everything he discovered during those final weeks.””

Emily opened it.

Several pages contained dates, names, and short notes.

One entry had been underlined three times.

March 16 — Second infant transferred. No death certificate. No official burial. Margaret believes the baby was taken to a private residence.

Emily looked up.

“There was no death certificate?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why did everyone say she died?””

“Because Denise told them she had.””

Emily continued reading.

Another entry appeared beneath it.

March 19 — Margaret contacted. She says she can protect one child. Cannot protect both without exposing the arrangement.

Emily stopped.

“What arrangement?””

Victoria lowered herself into a chair.

“I believe Margaret agreed to raise you as her own child while the other baby was placed somewhere else.””

Emily looked horrified.

“Why would she agree to that?””

“Because Arthur threatened to expose the illegal adoption and have both babies taken away. Margaret believed she could save at least one of you.””

Rachel shook her head.

“But why didn't she tell Emily?””

Victoria looked at Emily.

“Because the agreement wasn't just about the children. It was about the inheritance.””

She explained that Jonathan had prepared a new will naming both daughters as equal beneficiaries. Arthur had refused to accept it. He wanted control of the Whitmore estate, and he knew the existence of a second child could complicate the entire arrangement.

Richard had been brought into the scheme because he was already handling financial matters for Jonathan.

“He agreed to help move the documents,” Victoria said.

“In exchange, Arthur promised him a share of the estate.””

Emily's voice was barely audible.

“And Denise?””

“Denise agreed to tell everyone one baby had died.””

Emily closed the notebook.

“Then my mother spent her entire life carrying this secret.””

Victoria nodded.

“She wanted to tell you. But she believed your sister's safety depended on silence.””

Emily stared at the photograph.

“Do you know where my sister went?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No. But I know who signed the transfer papers.””

She opened the notebook to the final page.

A name appeared beside a handwritten address.

*Dr. Alan Reeves.*

Emily recognized the name from the hospital receipt.

“The doctor?””

“He was Jonathan's personal physician. He also helped Arthur arrange the transfer.””

“Is he still alive?””

Victoria nodded.

“He lives in a retirement community outside Lancaster.””

Emily immediately reached for her phone.

“I'm calling him.””

Victoria grabbed her wrist.

“Wait.””

“What?””

Victoria's eyes filled with fear.

“Your mother visited him three months before she died. She came back crying. She told me he had finally admitted what happened to the second baby.””

Emily froze.

“What did he say?””

Victoria looked down.

“He said the child was raised by someone inside the Carter family.””

Rachel slowly turned toward Emily.

“Inside the Carter family?””

Victoria nodded.

“And that person was not Richard.””

They left Victoria's house shortly after four.

Emily drove in silence while Rachel checked the address of Dr. Reeves.

Halfway down the highway, Emily's phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through.

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Claire.””

Emily tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

“Who are you?””

“I'm the woman in the photograph.””

Emily nearly swerved.

“What photograph?””

“The one taken outside St. Agnes Hospital. I know you've seen it.””

Rachel turned toward her.

Emily pulled into a gas station.

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you that over the phone.””

“Who are you?””

The woman breathed shakily.

“I'm the baby who disappeared.””

Emily closed her eyes.

For twenty-six years, she had believed she was an only child.

Now someone was telling her she had a sister.

“Are you Denise's daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And Jonathan's?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Emily pressed her hand against her mouth.

“Why are you calling me now?””

“Because I found something in my adoptive mother's belongings. A letter from Margaret Carter.””

Emily's heart hammered.

“My mother wrote to you?””

“Yes. And she asked me never to contact you unless I could prove who I was.””

“Can you?””

Claire's voice broke.

“I have the original hospital photograph. The birth records. And a letter from Jonathan.””

Emily stared through the windshield.

“Where can we meet?””

“Tomorrow morning. Ten o'clock. The old courthouse in Lancaster.””

“Why there?””

“Because there's something you need to know about Denise.””

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“She didn't just give me away. She came looking for me again when I was sixteen.””

Emily felt cold.

“What happened?””

“I'll tell you tomorrow. But bring someone you trust.””

The line went dead.

Rachel reached across the console.

“Emily?””

Emily looked at her.

“My sister is alive.””

Then another message arrived.

It contained a photograph of a woman standing beside Denise at a charity event.

The woman was wearing the same necklace Emily had seen in the hospital photograph.

May you like

Beneath it were six words.

She knows who really raised you.
