Chapter 5: The Woman Who Buried the Truth

Victoria Whitmore lived in a quiet stone house on the outskirts of Philadelphia.

The property was surrounded by tall oak trees, and a narrow gravel driveway led to a detached garage with peeling white paint.

Emily and Rachel arrived shortly after noon.

Emily had spent the entire drive rehearsing questions.

None of them seemed adequate.

Victoria opened the door before they knocked.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair pulled into a loose bun and a thin gold necklace resting against her dark green sweater.

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Oh, my goodness.””

Emily stood frozen.

Victoria reached out but stopped before touching her.

“You look so much like him.””

“Jonathan?””

Victoria nodded.

“Your biological father.””

Emily swallowed.

“Can we talk?””

“Of course.””

Victoria stepped aside.

Inside, the house smelled of cinnamon and old books. Family photographs covered the hallway walls.

Emily noticed one immediately.

A young man stood beside a pregnant woman wearing a white summer dress.

The woman had dark hair and Emily's eyes.

Emily approached the frame.

“Is that Denise?””

Victoria nodded.

“Twenty-seven years ago.””

“And the man is Jonathan?””

“Yes.””

Emily looked at the photograph again.

“Were they happy?””

Victoria gave a bitter laugh.

“Not for long.””

She led them into the sitting room and offered coffee.

Emily declined.

“I need the truth.””

Victoria sat opposite her.

“Then I should start at the beginning.””

She folded her hands.

“My brother married Denise when he was thirty-five. He was wealthy, generous, and foolishly in love. Denise was charming when she wanted something. She could make a roomful of people believe they were the most important person in the world.””

Rachel glanced at Emily.

“That sounds familiar.””

Victoria continued.

“Jonathan discovered she was having an affair with another man. When he confronted her, she told him she was pregnant and that the baby was his.””

Emily's throat tightened.

“Was I that baby?””

Victoria nodded.

“Jonathan believed you were his daughter. He was thrilled. He bought a little yellow house near the lake and started planning a nursery.””

“What happened?””

“Two weeks before you were born, he discovered Denise had been meeting Richard Carter.””

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“My father?””

“Your father now, yes. Richard was working for a company that managed several of Jonathan's commercial properties. He and Denise had been exchanging information about Jonathan's business for months.””

Victoria stood and walked toward a cabinet.

She returned with an old envelope.

“Jonathan hired a private investigator. He discovered Denise was planning to leave him as soon as she had secured control of his assets.””

Emily opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs of Denise and Richard entering a hotel together.

One photograph showed Richard handing Denise a thick document folder.

Another showed them kissing beside a black Mercedes.

Emily recognized the car.

It belonged to her father.

“Was he already involved with her when my mother was alive?””

Victoria nodded.

“He was.””

Emily looked down at the photographs.

“Did Jonathan know about the affair?””

“He confronted Richard. Then he confronted Denise.””

“What happened?””

Victoria's eyes grew distant.

“Jonathan told me he was going to report them for fraud. He said he had proof that Denise had forged his signature on several property transfers.””

“And then his car went off the bridge.””

Victoria nodded.

“The police called it an accident. But Jonathan was terrified of driving in bad weather. He never took that bridge during storms.””

Emily looked up.

“Did you tell the police?””

“I did. They questioned me for two hours. Then they showed me a report saying the brakes had failed because of mechanical damage.””

“Was it deliberate?””

“I believe so.””

Victoria's voice broke.

“But I couldn't prove it.””

Emily sat back.

The newspaper clipping suddenly felt heavier in her memory.

“Why did Mom take me?””

Victoria looked directly at her.

“Because Denise didn't want you.””

Emily frowned.

“What?””

“Denise wanted the inheritance. Jonathan had changed his will shortly before he died. He left everything to his unborn child.””

Emily stared at her.

“If I was his daughter, why didn't I inherit?””

“Because Denise claimed you had died during childbirth.””

The room went silent.

Emily felt her heart pounding.

“She told everyone I was dead?””

Victoria nodded.

“She said the baby had complications and died before leaving the hospital.””

“But I was alive.””

“Yes.””

“Who gave me to Margaret?””

Victoria's eyes filled again.

“Your mother.””

Emily's breath caught.

Victoria reached for another photograph.

It showed Margaret standing in a hospital corridor, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.

Emily recognized the tiny bracelet around the baby's wrist.

The same bracelet she had kept in a jewelry box since childhood.

It had the initials E.C. engraved on it.

“Margaret was at the hospital because she was visiting a friend,” Victoria explained.

“She discovered that Denise had arranged for the baby to be transferred into a private adoption network. Jonathan's estate was about to be settled, and Denise intended to claim the inheritance as the child's surviving parent.””

Emily shook her head.

“I don't understand.””

“Margaret had recently lost a pregnancy. She and Richard were devastated. When she learned what Denise was planning, she offered to take you.””

Emily stared at the photograph.

“Did Richard know?””

Victoria hesitated.

“He helped arrange the paperwork.””

“Then why did he never tell me?””

“Because he eventually realized that raising you gave him access to Jonathan's estate.””

Emily felt sick.

Victoria continued.

“Margaret loved you. Richard loved the money. Those were two very different things.””

Emily pressed her fingers against her lips.

For twenty-six years, she had believed Richard was her biological father.

Now she understood why her mother had never liked discussing her birth.

“Did Margaret know who Denise really was?””

“She knew enough. She knew Denise had lied about Jonathan's death. She also knew the inheritance had been placed into a protected trust.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

Victoria leaned forward.

“Because Denise threatened to have you taken away. She claimed Margaret had participated in an illegal adoption and that she would expose her if Margaret ever challenged the estate.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“My mother spent her life protecting me.””

Victoria nodded.

“And she paid dearly for it.””

Victoria led Emily upstairs to a small bedroom that had been preserved almost like a shrine.

A wooden crib stood beside the window.

A music box rested on a dresser.

Dust covered the shelves.

“Jonathan prepared this room for you,” Victoria said.

Emily stepped inside.

Her fingers brushed the edge of the crib.

A tiny wooden horse sat on the windowsill.

“Did he know what name Denise planned to give me?””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“He wanted to call you Elizabeth.””

Emily turned.

“Why?””

“Because his mother was named Elizabeth. But Denise insisted on Emily.””

Victoria opened the music box.

A gentle melody filled the room.

“He bought this the week before he died.””

Emily began to cry.

She had never known this man.

Yet somewhere inside her, the thought of a father who had prepared a room for her before she was born felt almost unbearable.

Victoria placed a hand on her shoulder.

“There's something else you need to see.””

She opened a small drawer and removed a folded piece of paper.

It was a handwritten note.

The date was two days before Jonathan's death.

Victoria,

If anything happens to me, make sure the child is safe.

Denise believes she has won, but she doesn't understand what Margaret knows.

Richard is not acting alone.

The person who arranged the transfer is someone I trusted more than anyone.

I should have seen it sooner.

J.

Emily read it twice.

“Who did he mean?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I've spent twenty-six years trying to find out.””

“Did you ever suspect anyone?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Your mother.””

Emily stepped back.

“What?””

“Margaret was the person Jonathan trusted most outside his family. She knew about the affair. She knew about the money. She knew Richard was involved.””

“But she saved me.””

“I know. That's why I never understood the letter.””

Emily looked down again.

There was a second sheet of paper attached to the note.

It was a hospital receipt.

The patient listed was Denise Whitmore.

The attending physician was Dr. Alan Reeves.

The date was the day Emily was born.

But the signature at the bottom wasn't the doctor's.

It was Richard Carter's.

Emily stared at it.

“Why would my father sign a hospital discharge document?””

Victoria's expression darkened.

“Because he wasn't supposed to be there.””

Emily turned the paper over.

A handwritten note appeared on the back.

Baby transferred to Carter family under emergency guardianship. Authorization received from A. Whitmore.

Emily looked up.

“Who is A. Whitmore?””

Victoria's face went pale.

“My father.””

Emily blinked.

“Your father?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Arthur Whitmore. Jonathan and my father.””

“But he died before Jonathan, didn't he?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Yes.””

She looked toward the window.

“And he was the person who raised Denise.””

Emily felt the room spin.

Denise hadn't simply married into the Whitmore family.

She had been part of it long before Jonathan ever met her.

Victoria took Emily's hand.

“There's something I haven't told you about Denise's first marriage.””

“What?””

“Denise wasn't Jonathan's wife when he first met her.””

May you like

Emily stared.

“She was his adopted sister.””
