Chapter 4: The Sister Behind the Signature

The moment Daniel said Melissa’s name, I felt like the ground beneath me shifted.

For years, I had blamed my mother.

And maybe I was right to.

She had chosen favorites.

She had allowed my daughters to feel unwanted.

She had controlled the trust.

But now there was another piece of the puzzle.

My sister.

The person who had watched her daughters eat expensive meals while Emma and Riley sat with empty plates.

The person who laughed when Riley asked to come to the theme park.

The person who told me it was “just for our family.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Daniel, are you sure?””

“We don’t make accusations based on guesses, Connor.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

A pause.

Then he answered carefully.

“We found documentation connecting Melissa to the withdrawal request. We still need to determine whether she acted alone.””

My stomach turned.

“Acted alone?””

“That means there may be more.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Emma and Riley were asleep.

Safe.

At least for that moment.

“Send me everything.””

“I will.””

After hanging up, I sat there for almost an hour.

Paige found me at the kitchen table.

She didn’t ask if something happened.

She already knew.

“What did you find?””

I looked up.

“It was Melissa.””

Paige’s expression hardened.

“The withdrawal?””

I nodded.

“She signed it.””

She slowly sat down across from me.

“I always knew your mother was capable of being cruel.””

“So did I.””

“But Melissa?””

I looked at the documents.

“I think I wanted to believe she was just following your mother.””

Paige shook her head.

“Connor, adults don’t accidentally hurt children.””

Those words stayed with me.

The next afternoon, I drove to Melissa’s house.

I didn’t tell Paige.

I didn’t tell anyone.

I needed to hear it from Melissa herself.

Her SUV was parked outside.

The same expensive SUV she always talked about.

The same one she bought after saying she was “struggling financially.””

I knocked.

A few seconds later, she opened the door.

Her smile disappeared when she saw me.

“Connor.””

“Can we talk?””

She crossed her arms.

“If this is about Mom, I don’t have time.””

“It’s about the trust.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What about it?””

I held up the folder.

“Why did you sign a withdrawal under Riley’s name?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that answers before words do.

Melissa stepped back.

“Who told you that?””

I stared at her.

“That’s your first question?””

She looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

“No.””

She sighed.

“Fine.””

I watched her carefully.

“You used my daughter’s name to take money.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Watch how you talk to me.””

“Why?””

“Because I’m your sister.””

I almost laughed.

“You stopped acting like my sister a long time ago.””

Her face hardened.

“You’re being dramatic.””

I froze.

The exact words my mother used.

“Do you even hear yourself?””

Melissa looked annoyed.

“Connor, you have always been sensitive.””

“And you have always been selfish.””

That hit a nerve.

She stepped closer.

“You think you’re better than us?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think my daughters deserved better.””

She looked away.

For one second, I saw something.

Not regret.

Something closer to embarrassment.

Then it disappeared.

“You have no idea what Mom had to deal with.””

“What does that mean?””

“She was trying to protect the family.””

“By stealing from my kids?””

Melissa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I turned to leave.

Then she said:

“You really think Dad was some perfect man?””

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned around.

“What did you say?””

She swallowed.

“You don’t know everything.””

“That’s the second time someone has said that to me.””

“Because it’s true.””

I stepped closer.

“Melissa, what are you hiding?””

Her eyes moved toward the folder.

Then back to me.

“Nothing.””

A lie.

A terrible one.

I left.

But before I reached my car, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Connor, we found another document.””

“What kind?””

“An amendment to the trust.””

My chest tightened.

“What does it say?””

His voice became serious.

“It changes everything.””

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father anticipated that someone might try to manipulate the trust after his death.””

I looked back at Melissa’s house.

“What did he do?””

Daniel answered:

“He created a secondary review process.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning every major withdrawal had to be approved by two people.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who was the second person?””

Daniel didn’t answer right away.

May you like

And when he finally did, I wished he hadn’t.

“Connor… the second approval came from your mother.””
