Chapter 12: The Woman Who Came Back
I couldn’t understand the sentence.
Not at first.
“Living under my mother’s name?””
Daniel repeated himself.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
I walked around the room.
“Explain.””
“We located Anna’s records.””
“And?””
“They show she changed her identity years ago.””
“To what?””
Daniel paused.
“Linda Carter.””
I stopped.
The room became silent.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
“Are you saying Anna became my mother?””
“No.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Someone has been using your mother’s identity.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
“I don’t know yet.””
I looked toward the window.
The world outside suddenly felt different.
Everyone had been lying.
Every story had another version.
“Daniel, where is Anna now?””
“We’re trying to contact her.””
“Trying?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she disappeared after the trust investigation became public.””
Of course.
Another person connected to the past.
Another person running from the truth.
The next morning, I received an unknown message.
No name.
No number saved.
Just one sentence.
*Stop digging before you destroy what remains of your family.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Your father knew the truth. He chose silence.*
My hands tightened.
Whoever sent it wanted me angry at my father.
Wanted me to doubt him.
But I had seen his letters.
I had seen his regret.
Someone was afraid.
I showed Paige.
She looked concerned.
“Do you think it’s your mother?””
“I don’t know.””
“What about Melissa?””
“I don’t know.””
That was the worst part.
I didn’t know anyone anymore.
Later that day, Melissa called.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“Connor.””
Her voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Broken.
“What?””
“I need to see you.””
“Why?””
“Because I owe you the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“The truth would have been useful years ago.””
“I know.””
That answer surprised me.
I agreed to meet.
When she arrived, she looked exhausted.
No expensive clothes.
No confidence.
Just someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
She sat across from me.
“I know about Emily.””
I didn’t react.
“How long?””
She looked down.
“Since she was born.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you let everyone pretend she didn’t exist?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was young.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It’s just the reason I made the first mistake.””
“First?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hung there.
“How many mistakes, Melissa?””
She looked at me.
“Too many.””
For the first time, she sounded honest.
“My mother told me if I admitted what happened, everything would fall apart.””
“What happened?””
She looked away.
“Anna wasn’t supposed to disappear.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Melissa’s hands shook.
“She didn’t leave.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She was forced out.””
“By who?””
Melissa looked at me.
And whispered:
“Grandma.””
My mother.
Again.
Always my mother.
But then Melissa said something I never expected.
“And Dad knew.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he stop her?””
Melissa’s eyes filled with guilt.
“Because he thought he could fix it quietly.””
I remembered the recording.
My father saying he chose silence.
I finally understood.
He wasn’t hiding because he didn’t care.
He was hiding because he was trapped.
“What happened to Anna?””
Melissa looked toward the window.
“She came back years later.””
“When?””
“Right before Dad died.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
“She wanted to tell him everything.””
“Did she?””
Melissa shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because she found out Dad was already investigating the trust.””
I felt a chill.
“Wait.””
I stood.
“Anna knew about the trust?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Melissa looked at me.
“Because she was the one who warned him.””
The room spun.
Anna wasn’t just part of the past.
She was connected to everything.
The fake amendment.
The stolen money.
The secrets.
“Where is she now?””
Melissa looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“Someone does.””
She nodded.
“Mom.””
I stared.
My mother.
The same woman who had controlled the trust.
The same woman who erased grandchildren.
The same woman who told me some things should stay buried.
Then Melissa whispered:
“Connor…”
“What?””
“She wasn’t just hiding the past.””
I waited.
“She was protecting herself from what Anna knew.””
Before I could ask more, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Connor.””
His voice was urgent.
“We found Anna.””
I held my breath.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then:
“She’s at the courthouse.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice became serious.
“Because she came to testify.””
I looked at Melissa.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Testify about what?””
May you like
Daniel answered:
“About who really forged your father’s final documents.””
