Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Floor

The front door splintered.

One more hit.

That was all it would take.

I looked around the diner.

A place I had spent years rebuilding.

A place I thought was ordinary.

A place where people came for coffee, pancakes, and quiet conversations.

But beneath the floorboards was a secret.

Behind the walls were lies.

And somehow, my family had been trapped inside them for years.

“Rick,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Is there another way out?””

His silence answered first.

Then he nodded.

“Behind the kitchen.””

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rick looked at him.

“Because you weren’t ready.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

The door cracked again.

This time, pieces of wood fell onto the floor.

We ran.

I kept Maya close as we moved through the kitchen.

She was fast, but she kept looking back.

Not at the door.

At Rick.

Like she still couldn’t believe he was helping us.

We reached the back wall.

Rick moved toward an old freezer.

He pulled it aside.

Behind it was a small metal door.

I stared.

“You had a secret exit this whole time?””

Rick unlocked it.

“I had a lot of secrets.””

The words carried more weight than he probably intended.

Before we could step through, a voice echoed from the dining area.

“Ethan!””

We froze.

The man outside had gotten in.

“You don’t know what your father started!””

Rick closed his eyes.

“He’s here.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Who?””

Rick didn’t answer.

Then footsteps approached.

Slow.

Confident.

A man appeared in the kitchen doorway.

The same man from the parking lot.

But now I could see his face clearly.

And I recognized him.

Not because I knew him.

Because my father’s photograph had shown me his face.

The missing fourth person.

The face that had been scratched away.

My blood turned cold.

“You,” I whispered.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.””

Maya immediately stepped behind me.

The man noticed.

“So this is the girl.””

I clenched my fists.

“What did you do to her father?””

His smile disappeared.

“That depends on what Rick told you.””

I looked at Rick.

He looked terrified.

The man continued.

“Your father made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted people.””

The words echoed.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“You were supposed to keep Ethan away.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I tried.””

The man laughed.

“You failed.””

I felt something inside me break.

Everyone had been moving around me.

Protecting me.

Lying to me.

Making decisions about my life.

And now I finally understood.

My father hadn’t abandoned us.

My mother hadn’t died.

Daniel hadn’t disappeared.

They had all been running from the same person.

Me.

I stepped forward.

“You’re afraid.””

The man raised an eyebrow.

“What?””

“You spent fifteen years hiding from a child.””

His expression darkened.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.””

“No,” I said.

“But I know who you are.””

I held up the photograph.

“You’re the reason my family was destroyed.””

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Then Maya suddenly moved.

She ran toward the metal door.

I grabbed her hand.

“What are you doing?””

She pointed inside the hidden passage.

Then signed:

My father is there.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She nodded.

“He’s alive?””

She shook her head.

Then pointed deeper into the darkness.

Not alive.

Something else.

A recording.

A message.

A final warning.

The man behind us stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice changed.

Panic.

Real panic.

“Do not let her open that door.””

I looked at the passage.

Then at Maya.

Because whatever was hidden down there…

May you like

Was the one thing this man had spent years trying to erase.

And Maya had just found it.
