Chapter 3: The Man in the Darkness
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
The voice behind me wasn’t a stranger’s.
It was a voice buried deep inside my past.
A voice I had spent years convincing myself I would never hear again.
“Ethan…”
The name sounded like a warning.
Slowly, I turned.
The emergency lights flickered on, painting the diner in a weak red glow.
And standing near the storage room door was Daniel.
My older brother.
The brother everyone told me had disappeared.
The brother who was supposed to be dead.
Maya stared at him.
Her whole body froze.
Then she grabbed my arm and signed one word.
Him.
My heart dropped.
“No,” I whispered.
Daniel took one step forward.
He looked older than I remembered. His face was thinner, his beard rough, and there was a scar running across his eyebrow that hadn’t been there before.
But it was him.
“Ethan, listen to me,” he said.
I backed away.
“You’re alive.””
His eyes softened.
“I know how that looks.””
“How that looks?”” I repeated.
“You vanished eight years ago.””
The diner was silent.
Even Rick stopped moving.
Daniel glanced toward the front door.
The man outside was still there, watching through the glass.
“We don’t have time for this.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You don’t get to disappear for eight years and then walk into my diner telling me we don’t have time.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
“She found you.””
Maya stepped closer to me.
Her fingers moved quickly.
I watched her signs.
She was asking me something.
Is he your brother?
I nodded slowly.
Then she signed again.
He was there.
A chill went through me.
“Where?”” I asked.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“At the parking lot.””
The room went quiet again.
Maya looked at him.
Then shook her head.
No.
She pointed at Daniel.
Then at the floor.
Then made a motion with her hands like someone falling.
Daniel looked away.
And that was enough.
I felt anger rising in my chest.
“You know what happened.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
Rick suddenly moved.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He walked from behind the counter, his calm expression returning.
Too calm.
“This little reunion is touching,” Rick said.
“But nobody here understands what’s actually happening.””
I looked at him.
“You’re going to explain.””
Rick smiled.
A cold, empty smile.
“Still acting like the hero, Ethan?””
My fists tightened.
“What did you do?””
Rick glanced at Maya.
“That girl doesn’t understand what she saw.””
Maya immediately stepped back.
Daniel moved between them.
“Don’t talk about her like that.””
Rick laughed.
“You’re protecting her now?””
“You know exactly why.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked between them.
Two men who clearly knew each other.
Two men connected to whatever happened outside.
“Someone tell me the truth.””
Nobody answered.
Then the woman near the window spoke.
“Ethan.””
I looked at her.
She pointed toward the storage room.
“The girl said something was hidden there.””
Rick’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
I walked toward the door.
Rick stepped in front of me.
“No.””
That single word confirmed everything.
“What’s inside?””
“Nothing.””
“Then move.””
He didn’t.
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
“Ethan, you don’t understand.””
I turned on him.
“Then make me understand.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
Then at the locked storage room.
Finally, he whispered:
“Your father’s evidence is inside.””
My entire body went still.
Maya’s father.
The man she said she saw Rick hurt.
The man who had discovered something.
“What evidence?””
Daniel looked toward the front door.
The man outside had stopped knocking.
Now he was just standing there.
Waiting.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The evidence that can put powerful people in prison.””
Rick’s face went pale.
Then the lights flickered again.
This time, they didn’t come back.
A crash came from the front window.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Maya grabbed my hand.
May you like
And in the darkness, I heard Rick whisper:
“You should never have learned how to understand her.””
