Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn't Hers

“That isn't my signature.””

Nia stood over the desk, staring at the transfer request.

Her name appeared at the bottom of the document.

The date was two days earlier.

She had never seen the paperwork.

She had never authorized the transfer.

And yet, according to the bank's system, she had agreed to surrender her controlling interest in Carter Design House to Sterling Properties LLC.

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Thomas, stop the transaction immediately.””

Thomas was already typing.

“The request is pending verification. We can freeze it, but I need to understand how someone accessed the account.””

Nia looked at the document.

“What if they succeed?””

“Then the matter becomes considerably more complicated,” Thomas replied.

Evelyn's voice hardened.

“They will not succeed.””

Thomas opened the transaction history.

“The application was submitted using an old authorization token.””

“Whose token?”” Nia asked.

He checked the record.

“Vanessa Carter's.””

Nia closed her eyes.

Of course.

Vanessa had not simply taken the money.

She had been preparing to take the entire company.

Thomas called the bank's fraud department and requested an immediate security hold.

Within minutes, the transfer was suspended.

But that wasn't enough.

“Miss Carter,” Thomas said, “I recommend you contact an attorney today. Someone may have access to your personal information.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know exactly who to call.””

She reached into her handbag and dialed a number.

“Margaret? It's Evelyn. I need you at the Whitmore office immediately. We have a forged transfer request involving Daniel Carter's daughter.””

Nia watched her make the call.

Then she looked at the medical authorization.

“Can we still arrange my surgery?””

Evelyn turned.

“Absolutely.””

“I don't want to wait.””

“Then we won't.””

They left the bank shortly before noon.

Evelyn arranged for a private medical consultation with the New York specialist and instructed her assistant to contact the clinic.

Nia sat quietly in the car.

She had spent years believing her biggest problem was her failing eyesight.

Now she was discovering that the people she had trusted had been making decisions about her entire future.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Madison.

Are you coming home? Mommy is angry.

Nia stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

She said you're trying to take everything away from us.

Nia began typing.

I'm not trying to take anything from you.

She stopped.

What could she possibly explain to an eight-year-old?

Instead, she wrote:

I'm trying to get back what Daddy left for me.

Madison replied almost immediately.

I miss you.

Nia's throat tightened.

She put the phone down.

Evelyn noticed.

“Your stepsister?””

Nia nodded.

“She didn't know what was happening.””

“Children often become casualties of adults' decisions.””

Nia looked out the window.

“She's not a bad child.””

“I didn't say she was.””

They arrived at Evelyn's design headquarters twenty minutes later.

The building was enormous, with glass walls and a sweeping staircase.

Inside, dozens of employees moved between offices and workstations.

Nia followed Evelyn into a private conference room.

A woman in her early sixties stood beside the table.

She had short silver hair and carried a thick leather briefcase.

“Evelyn.””

“Margaret.””

They embraced briefly.

Then Evelyn introduced Nia.

“This is Daniel's daughter.””

Margaret looked at Nia.

“Goodness. You look exactly like him.””

Nia managed a small smile.

Margaret opened her briefcase.

“I've reviewed the transfer request. The signature appears suspicious.””

“Can you prove it's forged?”” Nia asked.

“We'll need a handwriting expert, but there are several inconsistencies. The document also references an authorization that expired months ago.””

Nia exhaled.

“So we can stop them?””

“Yes. But I need to ask you something important.””

Margaret placed a document on the table.

“Did you ever sign anything transferring your father's company or intellectual property?””

“No.””

“Did you ever authorize Vanessa to act on your behalf after your eighteenth birthday?””

“No.””

“Good. Then we have a clear starting point.””

Margaret opened another folder.

“There's a separate issue. The company has not filed its annual financial statements correctly for two years.””

Evelyn frowned.

“That was Vanessa's responsibility.””

“Exactly.””

Margaret placed several printed reports on the table.

“According to the records, company funds were used to purchase a commercial property, luxury vehicles, and several pieces of jewelry.””

Nia looked at the figures.

“Can those assets be recovered?””

“Potentially. But first we need to establish who benefited from the transactions.””

Evelyn pointed to one line.

“What's this payment?””

Margaret checked the reference.

“An offshore design consultancy.””

“Amount?””

“Six hundred thousand dollars.””

Nia leaned closer.

“Who owns it?””

Margaret looked up.

“That's the interesting part. The company is registered to a man named Richard Hale.””

Evelyn went completely still.

“Richard?””

“You know him?””

Evelyn slowly closed the folder.

“Richard Hale was Daniel's former production director.””

Nia frowned.

“Was he the person who stole the textile technology?””

Margaret nodded.

“He left the company shortly before Daniel's death.””

Evelyn looked troubled.

“If Vanessa was working with Richard, this goes much deeper than the stolen medical fund.””

Nia felt sick.

“How much did they take?””

Margaret began calculating.

“Based on the records we currently have, the questionable transfers total approximately two million dollars.””

Nia stared at the table.

Two million.

Her father's money.

His designs.

His company.

And the trust he had built to protect her.

All of it had been treated like a personal bank account.

Margaret gathered the documents.

“I'll prepare the necessary legal notices. But Nia, there's something you should know.””

“What?””

“Vanessa may attempt to challenge the trust.””

“On what grounds?””

“She could argue that your father lacked capacity when he signed the final documents.””

Nia shook her head.

“He was perfectly capable.””

“I'm not saying it's true. I'm saying it's a possible legal strategy.””

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

“Daniel's medical records confirm that he was mentally competent.””

“Then we'll need to obtain them.””

Margaret stood.

“I'll begin immediately.””

After she left, Evelyn took Nia into a private office.

A large framed photograph hung behind the desk.

It showed Daniel, Evelyn, and a younger Richard Hale standing together outside their first design studio.

Nia studied the photograph.

“Was my father happy then?””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“He was happier than he'd ever been.””

“What happened?””

“Success changed people. Richard wanted more control. Daniel wanted to protect the original designs. They disagreed about licensing, ownership, and how far they should expand.””

“And Vanessa?””

Evelyn looked away.

“She entered the picture shortly afterward.””

Nia stared at the photograph.

“Did she ever work with you?””

“Briefly. She handled some administrative tasks.””

“Did you trust her?””

“I trusted Daniel's judgment.””

Evelyn paused.

“Perhaps that was my mistake.””

A knock sounded at the door.

An assistant entered.

“Mrs. Whitmore, there's someone downstairs asking to see Miss Carter.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Who?””

The assistant hesitated.

“Vanessa Carter.””

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

“Let her come up.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

A few minutes later, Vanessa entered the office.

She wore a fitted black dress and carried a leather folder.

Her eyes immediately went to Nia.

“Finally. I've been calling you.””

Nia remained seated.

“What do you want?””

Vanessa placed the folder on the desk.

“A settlement agreement.””

Evelyn laughed once.

“You cannot be serious.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Nia, I'm willing to give you fifty thousand dollars. In exchange, you withdraw the fraud allegations, release your claims against Sterling Properties, and sign the company transfer.””

Nia stared at her.

“Fifty thousand?””

“It's a generous offer.””

“You took two hundred and forty thousand dollars from my medical fund.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“That money was used to support the household.””

“You transferred company assets to yourself.””

“I kept the family financially secure.””

“And you forged my signature.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Listen carefully. You have no idea how complicated your father's business was. You could lose everything trying to fight me.””

Nia looked at the folder.

Then she pushed it back across the desk.

“I don't want your money.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Don't be stupid.””

“I want my father's company.””

“You're not capable of running it.””

“Maybe not today. But I'll learn.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You can barely see the documents in front of you.””

The words struck Nia like a physical blow.

Evelyn stood.

“Get out.””

Vanessa pointed at Nia.

“You think she cares about you? Evelyn wants the company. She's been waiting for Daniel's daughter to inherit it so she can take control.””

Nia looked at Evelyn.

Then back at Vanessa.

“That's not true.””

“You don't know that!””

Vanessa opened her folder and removed a photograph.

She placed it on the desk.

It showed Evelyn and Daniel standing outside a courthouse.

Behind them was a document with a visible heading.

*TRANSFER OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS.*

Nia stared at it.

“What is this?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask Evelyn what she signed the week before your father died.””

Evelyn's expression changed.

Nia slowly turned toward her.

“Evelyn?””

The older woman didn't answer immediately.

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

“You wanted the truth, Nia. There it is.””

She walked toward the door.

But before leaving, she turned around.

“And one more thing. You should ask Evelyn why she never told you about the last agreement your father made.””

The door closed.

Nia remained motionless.

Evelyn approached the desk.

“Nia, I can explain.””

Nia looked at the photograph again.

“Did you sign that document?””

“Yes.””

“Did you take my father's designs?””

“No.””

“Then why did Vanessa have this?””

Evelyn sat down.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because your father and I made a decision together. A decision that was supposed to protect you.””

Nia's voice trembled.

“What decision?””

Evelyn opened a locked drawer.

She removed a thick document bearing Daniel's signature.

Then she placed it in front of Nia.

“This is the agreement Vanessa doesn't want you to understand.””

Nia looked at the first page.

And the moment she read the title, she realized that her father had been planning something far bigger than a fashion company.

*THE CARTER-WHITMORE LEGACY TRUST.*

Beneath the title was a clause naming Nia as the sole beneficiary of a worldwide collection of textile patents.

And beside the clause was a handwritten instruction from Daniel:

The final design must never be sold. It must be completed by Nia herself.

Nia looked up.

“What final design?””

Evelyn's eyes moved toward the black velvet garment bag sitting in the corner.

“The one your father spent his final years trying to create.””

Nia slowly stood.

“My dress?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No, sweetheart.””

She opened the document to the last page.

“The dress you made last night is only the beginning.””

Then she revealed a photograph of a magnificent silver-blue gown.

Its skirt appeared to contain hundreds of tiny points of light.

And in the center of its bodice was the same silver star Nia had sewn into her hidden creation.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father called it the Star of Tomorrow.””

Nia stared at the photograph.

For the first time, she understood why he had left her the old sewing machine.

He hadn't simply wanted her to become a designer.

He had wanted her to finish something that could change the entire fashion industry.

But there was one problem.

The final page contained a handwritten warning.

If Richard Hale discovers that Nia has completed the prototype, he will do whatever it takes to claim it.

Evelyn looked at Nia.

“Now you understand why we must be careful.””

Nia glanced toward the garment bag.

Then she remembered the black curtain in her bedroom.

The creation nobody had been allowed to see.

She had thought she was making a dress to win a competition.

But her father had left her something much bigger.

And somewhere in Chicago, Richard Hale had just learned that Daniel Carter's daughter was alive, eighteen years old, and finally beginning to uncover the truth.
